This song has a really great dynamic range, not just in sound, but in emotion as well. At times, you feel like something dramatic is happening, and at other times it's like a really epic scene is taking place. I can never get enough of it!
it's because they are all a part of the same suite that Mike Portnoy wrote. There are 5 songs that are in the 12step suite: The Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, The Root Of All Evil, Repentance, The Shattered Fortress
awesome indeed. I remember reading something about how he has yet to release a single or EP or whatever of all the songs together. but then also in the same interview or whatever it was he said most likely if they were to do that they would record all the songs back to back live and release it on a live album, which would be amazing.
it's like "metropolis pt 2: scenes from a memory"; they're all separate songs, but they go together. they'll probably play the twelve-step suite all in a row like they did with SfaM
All on purpose, thats the work of Mike Portnoy, taking some songs from each album and give it a taste like the other ones, to then, asi in now, The Shattered Fortress , from the new album, complete the history behind the songs =) go look for it , The Shattered Fortress
PS: Pardon my english lol, not very good, cuz is not my main lang
This Dying Soul and The Glass Prison are both part of Portnoy's songs that include the twelve-step suite from the AA, they together make a huge concept song
All the songs in the suite and in the correct order are: The Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, The Root Of All Evil, Repentance and The Shattered Fortress. Try listening them in that order sometime, it makes sense.
The reson why some parts sound just as some parts in other songs they've made, is because it's a part of the progressive. It's quite coomon for progressive metal bands to have songs that build up on eachother.
u know 06:32 - 07:01 of this song is exactly the same as they do it in The Glass Prison. The lyrics r also similar to it along with The Root Of All Evil and a bit of Repentance
It's because they are linked together, it's all part of Mike Portnoy's Alcoholic Anonymous suite =) I like this song better than Root of all Evil though, but meh...
Oh and if you listen closely, you can also hear some resemblances in the lyrics ^^
By instrumental, do you mean technically advanced? They have a lot more "good" technical songs, but that's not what they're about. Being one of (if not the most) technically skilled band(s) in the world, they could easily play something more advanced than this.
I agree, i listenned to some more of their stuff and i see what you mean about their technical aspects.. ima stay on this page til the song finishes ^.^ woop
I've got one in my playlist of this album. Just wait for the ending of the song...it's like the Glass Prison getting smashed to pieces, except without the glass sounds like it was at the end of Glass Prison proper. It makes sense, since the next two pieces (Root, Repentance) are simpler, and are obviously intended to be.

Anyone how they made part of this sound EXACTLY like The Glass Prison and how they used the same thing for Repentance? Though this song still kicks ass.
They also used part of this song in The Root of All Evil. Its the series of songs linked to Mike Portnoys alcoholism he struggled with several years ago
Hey, wait a minute...I listen to classic rock, oldies, 80s metal and rock, and selective modern metal (such as Dream Theater). Metalhead...what does that even mean? I listen to anything in the rock and metal genres that has a good sound, meaning, and/or musical purpose to it. I typically stay away from most modern rock, especially alternative because that stuff lacks substance and most of the time good lead guitar fretwork.
i tried to buy it off itunes but since it's over 10 minutes, you have to buy the album. i never got that... why not just make it like $1.30 or $2.00 something?
because the freakin download would take up too much server bandwidth for iTunes to get off their lazy asses to take care of. Thats why you can't download anything over 10 minutes in length by itself.... go to the cd store... Instant download.
I don't want to sound like a jerk or anything, but 7:17 sounds a whole lot like Blackened by Metallica. Maybe DT was just paying tribute to them or something.

you have to have a directors account, which was free at a time, and then they cancelled it, I don't know if you have to pay for it, or can't have a directors account anymore, I have one =]
Lol i wasn't rubbing it in anyones face or anything, I was just saying that you have to have a directors account haha and i'm lucky enough to have gotten one, when in truth I thought they were just gunna be around forever anyways haha so I didn't wanna bother, but I did, and now I CAN upload vids past 10 minutes, I just don't have any yet =[
One Last Time has a piano solo intro, The Dance of Eternity has a quick solo in the middle, The Dark Eternal Night has 2 small "solos". That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
I guess we just will have to wait for the other 3 parts, because there are 9 already. And if you check the 12 steps, they are related with the parts of the songs...that's why I really like these songs ;D
Honestly, does DT ever make a bad song?! The song I dislike the most is Honor Thy Father, but even that's not too bad of a song, i listen to it every once in awhile.
Great energy and groove. Portnoy is not the best technical drummer but I dont know any other drummer who fascinates me more with power grooves and breaks. He often uses the same patterns but I love it that way.
you know you can go over 10 min for an upload without paying, up to like 11 min I think. They just threaten you with 10. Yeah still wouldn't fit the whole song, but you'd have more.
I think Green Day would have the opposite effect. In fact, the Koreans have just completed their super weapon: The "vagina ray." A concentrated stream of sound waves (American Idiot) is beamed at an enemy, and the testicles of said enemy fall off. If it's a women, she grows balls, which then proceed to fall off.
Has Dream Theater ever preformed the 12 step suite live as a single song?

Dream Theater have a lot of piano/keyboard solos. We're going to need a little more information to help...
Keyboardzrock 3 years ago
One Last Time has a piano solo intro, The Dance of Eternity has a quick solo in the middle, The Dark Eternal Night has 2 small "solos". That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

I like how in Dance of Eternity and The Dak Eternal Night both have old timey piano sounds. Its almost comical.

Panic Attack has a badass organ solo. That is my favorite DT song.

I guess we just will have to wait for the other 3 parts, because there are 9 already. And if you check the 12 steps, they are related with the parts of the songs...that's why I really like these songs ;D
spiazzi 3 years ago
Honestly, does DT ever make a bad song?! The song I dislike the most is Honor Thy Father, but even that's not too bad of a song, i listen to it every once in awhile.
Skwigelf100 3 years ago
they can do not so decent covers, but nope..i dont think they make bad songs lol

of course its the same, their an history of 8 parts i think, of portnoys hell's in the alcoholism
Awakenings11 3 years ago
actually there are 12 parts...the AA's (Alcoholics Anonymous) 12 steps program ;D
spiazzi 3 years ago
its supposed to be - its from Portnoys Alcoholics Anonymous Suite - he's had them on every album since 6 degrees
if you listen you'll find that
The Glass Prison
This Dying Soul
The Root of All Evil
Repentace
all share musical and lyrical themes i.e. "hello mirror, so glad to see you my friend"

add &fmt=18 to the end for way better sound quality. awesome song btw

Great energy and groove. Portnoy is not the best technical drummer but I dont know any other drummer who fascinates me more with power grooves and breaks. He often uses the same patterns but I love it that way.
His playing always sounds "cool"...

you know you can go over 10 min for an upload without paying, up to like 11 min I think. They just threaten you with 10. Yeah still wouldn't fit the whole song, but you'd have more.

oh and btw destructed green day is a faggot band so go listen to that untill your balls drop
PugletProductions 3 years ago 2
i think you misunderstood him xD
he meant, that most ppl have a shit taste in music, thats y DT doesnt get more views.
freakguitar1 3 years ago 5
I think Green Day would have the opposite effect. In fact, the Koreans have just completed their super weapon: The "vagina ray." A concentrated stream of sound waves (American Idiot) is beamed at an enemy, and the testicles of said enemy fall off. If it's a women, she grows balls, which then proceed to fall off.
