  • Has Dream Theater ever preformed the 12 step suite live as a single song?

  • not yet, but they will

  • when he says i wanna feel your body breaking he is refering to his achohal addiction.

  • this is sick.

  • this band is epic...so technical its freaky....the singing guitar drumming bass keyboard it all fits together so good its amazing

  • This song has a really great dynamic range, not just in sound, but in emotion as well. At times, you feel like something dramatic is happening, and at other times it's like a really epic scene is taking place. I can never get enough of it!

  • thats because it IS repentance

  • I'm sure that's why it's titled "This Dying Soul"... or do you mean it is IN repentence?

  • no man, parts of it.

    read what Kinkkupiiras wrote

  • I never really thought of it all as a single song, more of a series of songs.

I guess I thought suite meant something else, thanks though

  • 05:44 through 06:30 is my favorite part

  • wtf? This Dying Soul - The Glass Prison - Rite of Passage - all use same riffs at certain points. some lyrics too.

  • it's because they are all a part of the same suite that Mike Portnoy wrote. There are 5 songs that are in the 12step suite: The Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, The Root Of All Evil, Repentance, The Shattered Fortress

    played in that order too.

  • So, if I read it right, he basically wrote 5 songs that really COULD be put into one song? Because, that would be fucking awesome. :p

  • awesome indeed. I remember reading something about how he has yet to release a single or EP or whatever of all the songs together. but then also in the same interview or whatever it was he said most likely if they were to do that they would record all the songs back to back live and release it on a live album, which would be amazing.

  • it's like "metropolis pt 2: scenes from a memory"; they're all separate songs, but they go together. they'll probably play the twelve-step suite all in a row like they did with SfaM

  • duh.

  • All on purpose, thats the work of Mike Portnoy, taking some songs from each album and give it a taste like the other ones, to then, asi in now, The Shattered Fortress , from the new album, complete the history behind the songs =) go look for it , The Shattered Fortress

PS: Pardon my english lol, not very good, cuz is not my main lang

  • This Dying Soul and The Glass Prison are both part of Portnoy's songs that include the twelve-step suite from the AA, they together make a huge concept song

  • All the songs in the suite and in the correct order are: The Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, The Root Of All Evil, Repentance and The Shattered Fortress. Try listening them in that order sometime, it makes sense.

  • Rite of passage isn't in the 12 step suite. It's Glass Prison, this, Root of All Evil, Repentance and Shattered Fortress.

  • Fuck man, the bassist is fuckin awesome.

  • awesome

  • for the people who dont know dream theater , train of thought is the greatest metal album we humans will ever hear ty DT thank u...

  • dream theater rules!!

  • Also, the lyrics for this song are beautiful. My life to the T.

  • I pity the fool

  • does anyone know who wrote these lyrics?

  • mike did

  • Mike Portnoy did, the drummer. It's about his past when he was an alcoholic.

  • I'm going to download this song.

  • LOL blackened at 7:16

  • exactly ;)

  • Im meeting them tonight xD

  • The reson why some parts sound just as some parts in other songs they've made, is because it's a part of the progressive. It's quite coomon for progressive metal bands to have songs that build up on eachother.

  • The first time I heard the dual solo at the end my head exploded.

  • So did mine. Also nice Username. Portnoy reference! :D

  • u know 06:32 - 07:01 of this song is exactly the same as they do it in The Glass Prison. The lyrics r also similar to it along with The Root Of All Evil and a bit of Repentance

  • You don't say. That's what's called a Reprise

  • its a song split up into 5 parts...kinda

    1: Glass Prsion

    2: This

    3: TROAE

    4: Repentance

    5: Shattered Fortress.

  • Dude, i know. It's a twelve step suite by Mike Portnoy about something related to alcoholism... at least that's what i think.

  • yeah it's about the 12 steps of a recovering alcoholic.

  • Plus, The Mirror as prologue, or so people say >.>

  • The 12SS refrences the shit out of it, and it was also written by MP about his Alcoholism.

  • I just noticed that the guitar riff at 00:28 is the same rhythm from the beginning of The Root Of All Evil.

  • It's because they are linked together, it's all part of Mike Portnoy's Alcoholic Anonymous suite =) I like this song better than Root of all Evil though, but meh...

Oh and if you listen closely, you can also hear some resemblances in the lyrics ^^

  • Ah, you are right.

"Wanna feel your body breaking" - TDS

"I can feel my body breaking" - TROAE

  • wow... i never listenned to this band but this song is.. amazing i like the fast bit, it made me wanna throw something! xDD

  • its about the only good instrumental song they have by the way

  • By instrumental, do you mean technically advanced? They have a lot more "good" technical songs, but that's not what they're about. Being one of (if not the most) technically skilled band(s) in the world, they could easily play something more advanced than this.

  • I agree, i listenned to some more of their stuff and i see what you mean about their technical aspects.. ima stay on this page til the song finishes ^.^ woop

  • This isn't an instrumental.

  • Hang on a sec... what's that at 2.14? Sounds a lot like singing to me

  • lol shit forgot about that anyways i would like it if they didnt have the singing and just make instrumental it is a wiked song to listen to

i love it alot and it amps me up for a fight or a run

  • Comment removed

  • an instrumental is still a song. By your definition theres no such thing as songs in classical music and in symphonies.

  • What a song !!! <3 DreamTheater <3 Mike Portney !

  • It's Portnoy not Portney noob...

  • right enough though, songs like this bring me back to the good ol times... lol, playin half life 2 and listenin to dream theater

  • I like the vocal, but in some of the songs, I wish there wasn't any. I like Dream Theater more when it's 100% instrumental. At least some songs.

  • 00:41-00:53

    0_o holy shit.....

  • thats petrucci for yah

  • You think that's crazy, find a version of this song with the last minute and 27 seconds. Then you'll be like O.O

  • I've got one in my playlist of this album. Just wait for the ending of the song...it's like the Glass Prison getting smashed to pieces, except without the glass sounds like it was at the end of Glass Prison proper. It makes sense, since the next two pieces (Root, Repentance) are simpler, and are obviously intended to be.

  • 1. You suck

    2. You don't have a life

    3. Your head is the size of a beatle crotch

    4. You're an inspiration for birth control

    6. You fail at life

    7. you're a dumbass 'cause you haven't noticed i skipped 5

    8. You're crying at your own stupidity

    9. You finally do the world a favor and kill yourself

    Have a nice day!

  • Ok your an idiot .. hes having a little fun

Do the world a favour and go kill himself?

    A bit of an over-reaction?

It sort of reflects on your own life posting a reply like that doesnt it

  • Killing myself wouldnt do the world a favor, I'm just one person

    Yeah an over-reaction but,who cares?

It doesn't really reflect on my life, I'm just ignorant.

  • I never said killing yourself would do the world a favour.. but thats what that guy should be saying..

  • Great.

  • Quite.

  • People always shit on James LaBrie, but he's still one of the best vocalists out there, so shove it.

  • Really similar to Repentance O_o

  • yeah. The Glass Prison, This Dying soul, Repentance and The root of all evil is all pieces of the Twelve-Step Suite, written by Mike Portnoy.

  • oh cool Thanks for the info :D

  • Don`t forget The Shattered Fortress, off their new album, to be released June 23rd. ;p

  • get on the torrents now, the first 2 songs have been leaked, they're incredible...the albums sounds like a mix between train of thought and 6 degrees

  • send it to me man

  • ye sure, whats your email?

  • could u send it to me too plz? I'll send you a message with my email :)

  • DT best song in my opinion. Man! i can listen to this all day.

  • I think The Glass Prison is better, but that and this one are the best in the AA Suite. XD

  • Woa nice song i loved it

  • This is my favorite DT album

  • huh i just had a eargasiam

  • Theres nothing 2 say this music speaks for itself!

  • Dream Theater at its best.

  • Damn...the last mintue or so is the best part of the song....cant believe it got cut off!

  • great song

  • 8:06 and on for about thirty seconds always reminded me of Megadeath...

  • I think it sounds kool

  • It's spoken word, not rap. And honestly it's ONE PART. People need to get the hell over it.

  • Anyone how they made part of this sound EXACTLY like The Glass Prison and how they used the same thing for Repentance? Though this song still kicks ass.

  • They also used part of this song in The Root of All Evil. Its the series of songs linked to Mike Portnoys alcoholism he struggled with several years ago

  • Maybe you should stop copypasting stuff and move to Finland, at least 50% of teenagers here are metalheads.

  • Hey, wait a minute...I listen to classic rock, oldies, 80s metal and rock, and selective modern metal (such as Dream Theater). Metalhead...what does that even mean? I listen to anything in the rock and metal genres that has a good sound, meaning, and/or musical purpose to it. I typically stay away from most modern rock, especially alternative because that stuff lacks substance and most of the time good lead guitar fretwork.

  • Simply put, metalheads like metal. A metalhead can pe "pure" or not (like us two).

I was simply referring to your last post:

"---92% of teens have turned to pop and rap,

if your one the 8% who like to to headbang and disturb the peace copy and paste to 3 vi"

  • bass song!!! THIS DYING SOUL!! THIS DYIN SOUUUULLLL!!!!! SHIT

  • thanks so much for this!

i tried to buy it off itunes but since it's over 10 minutes, you have to buy the album. i never got that... why not just make it like $1.30 or $2.00 something?

  • because the freakin download would take up too much server bandwidth for iTunes to get off their lazy asses to take care of. Thats why you can't download anything over 10 minutes in length by itself.... go to the cd store... Instant download.

  • fuck your shit its called influence, no one in dream theater is remedial enough to COPY, stop being jealous...

  • Is is just me or does the intro resemble beast and the harlot? hmm maybe this song gave the rev the idea for it.

  • no. its just a bass roll.... 10000000 songs do it...

although the rev would copy because a7x sucks after waking the fallen.....

  • @Hydrowolf

Whatever you think of a7x, the rev is a frikkin awesome drummer. Obviously nothing on MP though lol

  • I orgasm everytime I hear this song...

  • Blackened Is the End

    Winter it Will Send

    Throwing All You See

    Into Obscurity

    Death of Mother Earth

    Never a Rebirth

    Evolution's End

    Never Will it Mend

    Never ♪

  • Sick intro..... Sick song

  • I don't want to sound like a jerk or anything, but 7:17 sounds a whole lot like Blackened by Metallica. Maybe DT was just paying tribute to them or something.

  • Yea it really does sound like Blackened....

  • Don't worry, it is blackened. They did a few parts of Metallica songs in systematic chaos - awesome album buy it, dreamtheater should get more attention, shame how shit little bands get attention they don't deserve.

  • Uhh, this is Train of Thought. But yeah Systematic Chaos is an awesome album. I have it. : )

  • Yeah I know its train of thought... Trust me I'm a huge dreamtheater fan

  • Yeah, i pretty alot agree on that. Dream Theater actually have more songs wich they copied riffs from other bands. The best example would be the songs on the "A change of season" album.

  • Uhhh, that's because half the album were covers. There was only one original song on it, and it really didn't copy any riffs.

  • yea they are slightly influenced by metallica

  • No, they are not. This is one of their hardest songs... Dream theater is more influenced by bands such as Queen, Rush(not new rush but old, like 2112 old), and the Who. They mostly made this album because a lot of people thought they were getting old and pansy ass and they didn't wanna take shit like that, so they made a metal album. Its awesome, ain't it?

  • They are AMAZING!

  • Any one notice how the intro riff is taken straight from Noose by Ark

  • sweet thx for the download

  • This song and Repentance on Systematic chaos shares the same tune of song..

There is a little Resemblance.. pretty close...

  • go look up Repentence on wikipedia. lol there are a few songs by Dream Theater that use the same lyric

  • they're two of the (soon to be) 5 songs that is "the twelve step saga"....that's why they all share some lyrics and music

  • The Glass Prison, This Dying Soul, The Root of All Evil and Repetance are a part of a series of songs by Mike Portnoy. Which is the reason why you can hear the main riff in Repetance and another riff in The Root of All Evil

  • I hope dt release an album of all the 12 steps to recovery from the Alcoholics Anonymous Suite. Good songs, they should also tour for it when Portnoy has finished writing them all, cus all those songs back to back live would be incredible!

  • I've heard they plan to play a live show with all the songs back-to-back, and will release a live album of it.

    WANT.

  • At one time I had 4 DT albums, the last being Scenes of a Memory and now i can only find When Dream & Day Unite. Thank you youtubers for letting me revisit these guys. Its so cool to catch up on what i missed. Its sort of novel to me that I am so into DT again all of a sudden but I am. What a wonderful band. Also, cool for them for finding their metal side again. For all you 'copyright infrigment' people, because of youtube I'm going to be rebuying all their albums now.

  • awesome song here. i think u can put a video thats over 10 min long, ive seen some vids like that, but idk how.

  • You have to have been a member before they put the length limit on.

  • you have to have a directors account, which was free at a time, and then they cancelled it, I don't know if you have to pay for it, or can't have a directors account anymore, I have one =]

  • Lucky for me, I do too. Thanks.

  • Lol i wasn't rubbing it in anyones face or anything, I was just saying that you have to have a directors account haha and i'm lucky enough to have gotten one, when in truth I thought they were just gunna be around forever anyways haha so I didn't wanna bother, but I did, and now I CAN upload vids past 10 minutes, I just don't have any yet =[

  • well the you can help us by uploading all the DT songs that last longer then 10 minutes

  • im pretty sure can have a vid over 10 minutes cause i have seen alot.

    just saying

  • this song if bitchin

  • this song is epic!! this is why these guys are my favorite band ever

  • which dream theater song is the one w/ the piano solo

  • the dance of eternity?

  • The Dark Eternal Night?

  • Forsaken

  • wait for sleep?

  • Dream Theater have a lot of piano/keyboard solos. We're going to need a little more information to help...

  • One Last Time has a piano solo intro, The Dance of Eternity has a quick solo in the middle, The Dark Eternal Night has 2 small "solos". That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

  • I like how in Dance of Eternity and The Dak Eternal Night both have old timey piano sounds. Its almost comical.

  • All of them?

  • Panic Attack has a badass organ solo. That is my favorite DT song.

  • "home" as well, that one is amazing

  • I guess we just will have to wait for the other 3 parts, because there are 9 already. And if you check the 12 steps, they are related with the parts of the songs...that's why I really like these songs ;D

  • Honestly, does DT ever make a bad song?! The song I dislike the most is Honor Thy Father, but even that's not too bad of a song, i listen to it every once in awhile.

  • they can do not so decent covers, but nope..i dont think they make bad songs lol

  • the mirror sucks. even though that was the first song of portnoy's alcohol thing

  • i love the mirror! lol

i guess it's just an opinion thing.

  • it wasnt actually the first song - The glass prison was its just he took elements from the mirror

  • 6:33 same as glass prison XD XD XD XD

    by the way love DT

  • of course its the same, their an history of 8 parts i think, of portnoys hell's in the alcoholism

  • actually there are 12 parts...the AA's (Alcoholics Anonymous) 12 steps program ;D

  • its supposed to be - its from Portnoys Alcoholics Anonymous Suite - he's had them on every album since 6 degrees

if you listen you'll find that

    The Glass Prison

    This Dying Soul

    The Root of All Evil

    Repentace

all share musical and lyrical themes i.e. "hello mirror, so glad to see you my friend"

  • add &fmt=18 to the end for way better sound quality. awesome song btw

  • Great energy and groove. Portnoy is not the best technical drummer but I dont know any other drummer who fascinates me more with power grooves and breaks. He often uses the same patterns but I love it that way.

    His playing always sounds "cool"...

  • you can put 10:59

  • Nice song :P

  • you know you can go over 10 min for an upload without paying, up to like 11 min I think. They just threaten you with 10. Yeah still wouldn't fit the whole song, but you'd have more.

  • oh and btw destructed green day is a faggot band so go listen to that untill your balls drop

  • i think you misunderstood him xD

he meant, that most ppl have a shit taste in music, thats y DT doesnt get more views.

  • I think Green Day would have the opposite effect. In fact, the Koreans have just completed their super weapon: The "vagina ray." A concentrated stream of sound waves (American Idiot) is beamed at an enemy, and the testicles of said enemy fall off. If it's a women, she grows balls, which then proceed to fall off.
