@titanium9000 who was the original keyboard player for Dream Theater? Seems like I did hear that Jordan Rudess was not the original but wasn't sure how long he has been with DT.That's why I asked the origonal question.
@titanium9000 Thanks. It's quite obvious that I haven't known a lot about DT.I actually heard of them probably either back in the 90's or early 2000's.I actually saw their Score concert on VH1 Classic one friday eve and thought they sounded pretty awesome.I eventually bought the CD of the Score concert and have listened to it a lot.But I am not so into them as to go back and buy every CD,and most likely I will never buy another one ever. But I watch video clips here on you tube though.
@818TTV You didn't get a point of my statement (which was a question grammatically, but it's a statement if you think about it). It simply means that I know Jon Hammer very well, but I have no clue who Constanza is ever care to check.
It's fun to watch this long version -- but it is SO HARD to match the POWER & PUNCH that the 1 minute packed to start every episode of MIAMI VICE ! That audio and visual is etched in my peanut brain FOREVER !
@rdoetjes Describing Jan as an icon of our youth sums it up pretty well. I can't believe how commercial and cheesy Jan became after about 1982. After all of the amazing things he did in the 70's, it's just tragic.
Nice Korg T3 and Wavestation. Still my two favorite Korg instruments, actually, the only Korg instruments that I like (and the M1 of course). Thanks for posting.
holy crap a korg M1 and I think that's a roland D-50... had an M1 WAY back but still rockin' the D-50... no wait that's another Korg... never mind... It's like in the video they just don't want to show the damned synths cause they know you're trying to figure out wtf they are... ugh....
Above all else, you know what this song makes me want to do? Cruise down a busy street with this blasting in a Trans Am or Firebird. It's so badass. Damn, the drums and guitar riffs gets the heart pumping.
Did they write this song strictly for the show or was it just so fitting the Michael Mann decided to use it for the show after hearing it? I love this song either way. It's so badass (an 80s slang!)
"Oh Yeah" was he only Jan album I ever got, (1976 I think), couple years after getting into Mahavishnu Orc... bought it in Hills Dept store I recall. (Doubt these days Walmart or anysuch store would bother stocking any jazz, jazz-fusion albums... unless they had some 'Miami Vice"-like crossover.) Anyway OY is a good album. By late 70s I suspect jazz-fusion decreased in popularity the same way progressive rock did.... they probably both rode the same expansive wave... idealism of the 60's
Probably the best version of this song I have heard. Love how Hammer plays his synth like an electric guitar. Pinnella from Symphony X is known for doing that too...
i think tony williams makes a disaster in this video...his moves are clumsey and out of time...i think if we put a dunky with two baseball bats playing a xilofon would sounds better than him...
No my friend, Tony's not out of time. In fact he's dead on, but Tony is known for playing off time while still being in time. His style is reputably based on counter rhythms and polyrhythms I do agree that in this song it seems out of place a little. But Jan Hammer has played extensively with Tony, so Jan wanted that in there, instead of the straight drum machine feel that this song is known for. So it was intentional. I did like the last part of your comment, though, that was funny.
i think tony williams makes a disaster in this video...his moves are clumsey and out of time...i think if we put a dunky with two baseball bats playing a xilofon would sounds better than him...
@pEPINOREDENTOr hey you'rea mindless ignoranimus- tony does polyrhythms, hemiolas, and displacements, which confuse ingnorant wanna-bees like you who need quarter notes with no subdivisions to find a beat.
Is there anyone here who knows what happened to some clips that seem to be taken from the same concert. There were tumes like Blue Wind , Darkness etc. They vanished and I cant find them anywhere. The Blue Wind version this band was out of the ordinary
isaacrife08-He never recorded with Dixie Dregs, or as they were later known, The Dregs. He did fill in for their keyboardist T. Lavitz on one of their last tours, and again during the last leg of a reunion tour. But he was never officially a band member. He recorded 2 discs with the Dregs drummer Rod Morganstern on a duo project, and toured with the Steve Morse Band (Dregs guitarist). But that is awesome that you did a book report on him...cool!
I've never seen Tony Williams bash away like this on anything.... How cool, a guy with some of the deftest, softest touch can cross over and bang the F outta the hats. SWEET!
If you really want to hear Tony at maximum intensity, check out the the Tony Williams Lifetime's first album "Emergency!" I agree with your comment though. Tony might have had the greatest dynamic range and sensitivity of any drummer ever!
Anyone who likes this will love Jeff Beck's "Wired" albumn. Jeff and Jan blend so well its almost hard to tell who is who - brilliant musical expression and tone.
Sysx, I'd just like to say thanks for posting this one as I have now listened to it more times than I can count. I'll leave the arguing to everyone else.
This song is crap when there's no Fairlight Series IIx running the show, and Fairlight sound samples in the sequence. It's just not inspired. And not genuine either.
wrong wrong wrong, when it comes to versatility tony has alot more and he revolutionized an instrument...not only in Jazz but in drum playing jordan is great but he didnt impact music as much as tony did
I agree. I dont give a damn about perfect pitch or not Diastavrones , it doesnt really say anything about his musical imagination. Its like photographic memory, it doesnt make you a great author. To me Jordan Rudess is brutaly competent. He seems like a very humble and nice guy, so I think he would laugh at this discussion about him and Tony if he would read it. :) best, Sandemose
Jordan Rudess is a great keyboardist but a lousy songwriter, in my opinion. If you listen to his stuff these days, it has no melody. Me, I prefer Tchiakovsky over Lizst, so I appreciate the songwriting skills of someone like a Jan Hammer (certainly a great keyboardist in his own right) over the keyboard abilities of Rudess.
it's an obsolet "instrument"(if it can be called "instrument"...) actually keytars were mostly used as remote control keyboards on stage, for the mobility of the player(just like for the hexagonal Simmons drums and their bright coloured pads:why? => these musicians -keyboardists,drummers...mainly- needed some recognition on stage, hence these new gadgets(well.."new"... back then...)
Still ,I do agree with some of the comments : keytar= shit...

Those "keytar"things are so 80s it hurts, I love them. Especially because they allowed the keyboardist to come out with the guitarist, bass player etc. and rock their asses off.
Keyboards of the regular kind are OK too, to each their own, but seeing Hammer rock out like this is COOL.

The Lync LN-4 made in 1988. Lync is out of business now.

that was the funniest jam ever. the drummer fucked the solo up. the guitarest , i'm sorry , the Keytarest could have maybe done a better jod too

You're an observant fellow! I think you'll find that the drumming was entirely intentional.
While I find 'keytaring' a little corrny, he did write that song for Miami Vice.

That was an awesome jam with two key legends and a phenom on drums. Classic theme song

Ofcourse Jan Hammer was the star here.. But Rudess, would've done it sooo much better then him! Even back then.. Jan sounds a bit boring here.
JR.. You're the best!

Since Hammer wrote the MV Theme, it's irrelevant whether Rudess could have "played it better". And that's speculation, anyway.
The world is full of great keyboard sidemen, but there are precious few great keyboardists/composers.
You're missing the point entirely-
When he's in Hammers' league as both a keyboardist/composer
we'll all acknowledge it; 'til then, my comments stand.
