Thank you for uploading. I am living vicariously through YouTube all the live experiences of this band that I have missed. Damn being born about ten years too late!
I really admire Phill Collins for the way he sings this song, the notes and style chosen. Also for other songs such as abacab, turn it on again, me & sarah and jane, one for the vine and Eleventh Earl of Mar.
BUT .. is there anyone that could tell me if that vocal work is original from him or comes from another artist? At least i think he has been very original on the songs I mentioned
@voidstuff I'd venture to say it's all Phil, only because I haven't heard him say he's trying to copy a particular style. I know Tony and Mike said once he recorded his first solo album he came back as a new singer, so again, I think it's all him. Can't say I've ever heard anyone like him. :) Good question!
Such a great tour yet one of the worst professional concert recordings I have ever seen. Seriously, was this recorded on $5 video cameras? The editing is ridiculous. The band must of been pissed considering the level of perfection from this band.
@ceazea Looks like standard early 80's recording to me. What about it is bothering you? I used to have this recorded on VHS. Bugs me that I've lost all those tapes over the years.
@kamwrites ???? Seconds out footage was great (76' 77'). The audio and video quality is tereble. The editing is beyond bad. If you have watched this you will see cameras that appeared to have gotten moved or bumped and yet they kept it in the final edit. One that comes to mind is during In The Cage (Cinema Show section).
Great instrumental part, but It looks like Collins tries to simplify material for wider audience, the way that eventually declined Genesis despite its great comercial success in the last years.
Totally cool song, great to see it live! I played in a band called "Off The Wall" in the early '80s, and we did "Turn It On Again", "Abacab" and "Dodo Lurker". The first two always packed the dance floors, but generally this one was a listener. Audiences were appreciative, however, and impressed (I think) that we were pulling it off. And I agree with annnan - rhythmically very cool!
This is NOT the band that did "Entangled". That was co-written with Steve Hackett who left after "Wind and Wuthering". And while I also prefer the Genesis before Hackett left, there are moments of sheer genius here and there afterwards. Dodo/Lurker is one of them, IMHO.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Are you guys HIGH? I used to track Genesis, and for the first time in 20 years Youtube'd them, loved the DODO, saw your comments, and thought, "These dudes are HIGH, still hangin' on to Genesis after all these years!@!!???
Im sorry I should have been more clear. I meant that it sounded like the crazy stuff that gabriel writes, vocally they have similarities but are distinguishably different in other ranges. phil is a bit more nasally/echoey while peter has a more throaty tone, both brilliant singers
This is my favorite song of the 3-man era. Too bad there isn't more video from the 81 tour, as the 3SL VHS has horrible editing choices ... including this clip. (They missed all the dramatic lighting changes.)
A brilliant piece. I remember how they opened with this piece during the Mama tour in 1984 and the place absolutely went wild! That has to have been the greatest concert I've ever been to.
I was too young!!!!!!! Interesting that the recorded Mama tour does not have Dodo/Lurker on it if they played it on the tour. Where did that footage go? On of the better post Peter songs and certanly one of the best of the 80's from them
I have a similar reaction to this song. It's terrific prog rock, and at a point in their careers where they were clearly veering towards more accessible, pop-oriented tunes.
Abacab is the last Genesis album I can listen to all the way through without dying a little inside ... well, the first side of it at least. Furthermore, "Dodo" is the clear standout on the album -- the last true Genesis classic.
Not that I'm such a close-minded "prog nut", hating everything that is (or resembles) POP. But how did Genesis go from writing tremendous pop like "Turn it On Again" and "Duchess" and "Me and Sarah Jane" to the crap on Invisible Touch and We Can't Dance???
I agree with your point hegelec. I agree exactly. If you are going to stay around as long as a band like this has you have to keep up with what is going on around you. Not many bands can handle commercial and artistic sucess as an equal. Abacab was the last "so called" artistic effort of the band. I will tell you the other reason I believe it is without a doubt the dreadful drum machine wrecked this band. It was novel at first but it changed the way they wrote music.
There are few people who can put on a performance like Phil Collins. Now, you add Genesis's amazing songs to the mix and you got something really powerful.
One of my favourite shows ever... thought I would never be able to see it but Martin Levac's band called Turn It On Again brings this show back to life! You must see these guys, they are mind-blowing! Check out their current tour dates and see them if you can!!!!!!!! turnitonagainDOTcom is their website
This is the album & tour that actually made them Rock Monsters. Almost everyone in my area were asking, "Who are THESE cool f*ckers? I've never heard of 'em before." All of sudden, these people who'd been going to Black Sabbath and Molly Hatchet shows were trying to figure out how they could go to a Genesis concert! (Most of 'em had to wait until the 1984 Tour, though...) So I hate this Pseudo-historian dribble about Genesis turning "Top-40" after PG left.
Musical Box brings the Three Sides Live show back to LIFE! See them live, new dates! Philadelpia, New York, Toronto and more! Check out their website! turnitonagainDOTcom they are amazing!!
I so wish they would play this again live, it kills! Samwe lineup as the current tour, so I don;t see why not. Come on lads, its been a while since we have heard this live
I saw them do this in Edinburgh in '82, and Birmingham '84, I'd say it was better on the Mama tour, especially as a show opener, I swear they just about blew the roof off the place. Great to see the guys back on the road, long may it continue!
Yup. I guess re-mix would be the right term. They didn't just go to the stereo recording and clean it off, drive up the bass and treble, they went and mixed it as though they wanted it to sell in the modern market. In short, I love it.
Everybody bitches about Genesis without PG - I'm a huge fan of Pete's solo stuff, I think when he's at his best he is THE best - but I have yet to hear any PG era Genesis that i like as much as this stuff.
I was initially disappointed that Lurker was truncated, but it works. The Three Sides Live video was my introduction to Genesis - tragically, I could probably recite all the Hugh Fielder interviews word for word...
I have a version of this song, November 1983 into the Mama tour. They opened the show with Dodo. It's just amazing!!! It's available for download on e-mule.
Great performance. Anybody ever figure out that riddle? "Clothes of brass and hair of brown, seldom need to breathe, don't need no wings to fly. And a heart of stone, and a fear of fire and water, who am I?" Maybe it's like, metaphorical or something. ;) I love the way he goes into conductor mode! Earlier Genesis might be more "prog", but this era they were tighter, cleaner, more focused, more powerful.
Hair of brown was to be seaweed after the submarine surfaced. Tony Banks answered this in an interview during the WCD tour. In fact, the working titles for the songs were "German 1 and 2" and the sound was influenced by some old U-boat movie.
Brilliant. Thats bothered me for fifteen years! Does the track Who Dunnit? have some sort of link to this as well? I'm sure i remember reading a ridiculously intricate breakdown of the lyrics. It may of course be complete bollocks
Nope, that's a standard issue Stratocaster he's using here, albeit outfitted with an Alembic "Stratoblaster" pre-amp. The Fender Custom shop didn't exist when this footage was shot.
