  • dodo-keep it dark- abacab are the only songs i like from abacab...not a good album as the last ones

  • @lorenic95

What about Me and Sarah Jane? Like it or Not? Those two should be on the list for sure.

  • @todaystomsawyer

    mmm not for me

  • Thank you for uploading. I am living vicariously through YouTube all the live experiences of this band that I have missed. Damn being born about ten years too late!

  • Towards the end when Phil is flailing his arms he kinda reminds me of George acting like Coco the monkey on Seinfeld. LOL

    ...great video by the way.

  • I really admire Phill Collins for the way he sings this song, the notes and style chosen. Also for other songs such as abacab, turn it on again, me & sarah and jane, one for the vine and Eleventh Earl of Mar.

BUT .. is there anyone that could tell me if that vocal work is original from him or comes from another artist? At least i think he has been very original on the songs I mentioned

  • @voidstuff I'd venture to say it's all Phil, only because I haven't heard him say he's trying to copy a particular style. I know Tony and Mike said once he recorded his first solo album he came back as a new singer, so again, I think it's all him. Can't say I've ever heard anyone like him. :) Good question!

  • @kamwrites ok , thanks. I would love if you would give me some links from where I can learn more about genesis music and recording info.

  • Such a great tour yet one of the worst professional concert recordings I have ever seen. Seriously, was this recorded on $5 video cameras? The editing is ridiculous. The band must of been pissed considering the level of perfection from this band.

  • @ceazea Looks like standard early 80's recording to me. What about it is bothering you? I used to have this recorded on VHS. Bugs me that I've lost all those tapes over the years.

  • @kamwrites ???? Seconds out footage was great (76' 77'). The audio and video quality is tereble. The editing is beyond bad. If you have watched this you will see cameras that appeared to have gotten moved or bumped and yet they kept it in the final edit. One that comes to mind is during In The Cage (Cinema Show section).

  • Great instrumental part, but It looks like Collins tries to simplify material for wider audience, the way that eventually declined Genesis despite its great comercial success in the last years.

  • @unlikeanyotherhuman Mink, the furry critter often used to make fur coats.

  • I would say Dodo/Lurker is one of the top 3 Genesis songs. Love the live version here!

  • 4:42.would that be considerd a free style by phil collins4:42-4:52

  • @meskwakidiggler No thats the beginning lyrics of "Lurker"

  • thank you sir.now i understand.

  • Genesis is awesome in all its forms, so why are you mocking it? I don't understand.

  • Totally cool song, great to see it live! I played in a band called "Off The Wall" in the early '80s, and we did "Turn It On Again", "Abacab" and "Dodo Lurker". The first two always packed the dance floors, but generally this one was a listener. Audiences were appreciative, however, and impressed (I think) that we were pulling it off. And I agree with annnan - rhythmically very cool!

  • This is NOT the band that did "Entangled". That was co-written with Steve Hackett who left after "Wind and Wuthering". And while I also prefer the Genesis before Hackett left, there are moments of sheer genius here and there afterwards. Dodo/Lurker is one of them, IMHO.

  • Minky pretty - so minky must die. Must DIE!

  • @Raskoilniki Actually it is "mink me pretty- so mink he must die". Still one ofthe best Genesis songs of the 80's!!!

  • dodo ugly.... so dodo must die!!!!

  • No friend to the snowman :--O

  • Poor snowman gets melted :(

  • Yes, Genesis rocks... so shut it. :) You should check out the DVD from their 07 tour.

  • I totally disagree and think ABACAB is a breakthrough

  • Tonys keyboard solo tells more than any lyrics ever could...

  • Is this concert available on DVD?

  • "Fish he got a hook in his throat/ Ooh, fish he got problems!" That's hilarious!

  • We all do..

  • oh ya he got old.

  • Only Phil Collins can sing it right. Phil where are you???

  • that is phil

  • Great song!

  • the song is abaut an atomic submarine.the hidden part of the song is submarine and it was noy realized in the original album abacab

  • Chester Thompson's drumming is amazing,what

    a fantastic tune.Coolest song on Abacab.This

    sounds much better live!!!!!!!!

  • Good call ! Chester is AWESOME he is really working it on this one, but I wouldnt expect anything less.

  • Now this was one of the better post Gabriel songs because it had that old epic feeling instead of 3 minute "hits".

  • it sounds like gabriel stuff

  • @TeeStall No way, but he does vocalize low range to imitate gabriel in a couple of spots, like that last "At All"

  • Im sorry I should have been more clear. I meant that it sounded like the crazy stuff that gabriel writes, vocally they have similarities but are distinguishably different in other ranges. phil is a bit more nasally/echoey while peter has a more throaty tone, both brilliant singers

  • Keyboards are amazing in this song

  • cool song, I like it

  • and then something spoke..and this is what it said to me. Love this song!

  • 2eyes looked to see what i was :@)

  • This is my favorite song of the 3-man era. Too bad there isn't more video from the 81 tour, as the 3SL VHS has horrible editing choices ... including this clip. (They missed all the dramatic lighting changes.)

  • lol i love the keyboard.

  • Darth Vader, agitator.

  • actually it's "Dog baiter, agitator"

  • yeah that's what it is

  • A brilliant piece. I remember how they opened with this piece during the Mama tour in 1984 and the place absolutely went wild! That has to have been the greatest concert I've ever been to.

  • I was too young!!!!!!! Interesting that the recorded Mama tour does not have Dodo/Lurker on it if they played it on the tour. Where did that footage go? On of the better post Peter songs and certanly one of the best of the 80's from them

  • at what flight speed wre they too bigicarus

hRD CHARGER BLINMKY REED snot some jar jar bloninks schwet LURKERS loud. to pur out the cave seeker fromoth

  • I have a similar reaction to this song. It's terrific prog rock, and at a point in their careers where they were clearly veering towards more accessible, pop-oriented tunes.

  • Abacab is the last Genesis album I can listen to all the way through without dying a little inside ... well, the first side of it at least. Furthermore, "Dodo" is the clear standout on the album -- the last true Genesis classic.

Not that I'm such a close-minded "prog nut", hating everything that is (or resembles) POP. But how did Genesis go from writing tremendous pop like "Turn it On Again" and "Duchess" and "Me and Sarah Jane" to the crap on Invisible Touch and We Can't Dance???

  • I agree with your point hegelec. I agree exactly. If you are going to stay around as long as a band like this has you have to keep up with what is going on around you. Not many bands can handle commercial and artistic sucess as an equal. Abacab was the last "so called" artistic effort of the band. I will tell you the other reason I believe it is without a doubt the dreadful drum machine wrecked this band. It was novel at first but it changed the way they wrote music.

  • I saw Phil Collins once, he had clothes of brass and hair of brown.

  • Interesting. I read somewhere that he has a horrible fear of fire and water, and that he seldom feels the need to breathe.

  • Sorry, "epitome"...

  • This song is the epitomr of rhythm for anyone who wishes to learn some rhythmic music.....ROCK ON,GENESIS!!!!!

  • Don't get me wrong, the title track is awesome, but this is the song that MAKES Abacab.

  • Great song!

  • There are few people who can put on a performance like Phil Collins. Now, you add Genesis's amazing songs to the mix and you got something really powerful.

  • trick of OWW Oshun

    city of gold \ meanwhile

  • One of my favourite shows ever... thought I would never be able to see it but Martin Levac's band called Turn It On Again brings this show back to life! You must see these guys, they are mind-blowing! Check out their current tour dates and see them if you can!!!!!!!! turnitonagainDOTcom is their website

  • tay, as in chicopeeay, knell? dodo werthers the calming mouth soak, nell? need blinky> need mr binky?

  • This is the album & tour that actually made them Rock Monsters. Almost everyone in my area were asking, "Who are THESE cool f*ckers? I've never heard of 'em before." All of sudden, these people who'd been going to Black Sabbath and Molly Hatchet shows were trying to figure out how they could go to a Genesis concert! (Most of 'em had to wait until the 1984 Tour, though...) So I hate this Pseudo-historian dribble about Genesis turning "Top-40" after PG left.

  • best post-Gabriel genesis song, ever.

  • what about dance on a volcano??!! Or Squonk??!! Or Los Endos??!!

  • I so wish they would play this again live, it kills! Samwe lineup as the current tour, so I don;t see why not. Come on lads, its been a while since we have heard this live

  • Sheesh. If that's not proof Genesis never jumped the shark, nothing is.

  • I saw them do this in Edinburgh in '82, and Birmingham '84, I'd say it was better on the Mama tour, especially as a show opener, I swear they just about blew the roof off the place. Great to see the guys back on the road, long may it continue!

  • Bloody great. Phil is an underrated singer!

  • Awesome big sound! Chester on drums! Great groove and syncopation. Largely unknown Gene-gem.

  • Tell me about it. The remaster kicks ass as well.

  • Are you referring to the re-master of "Abacab"?

  • Yup. I guess re-mix would be the right term. They didn't just go to the stereo recording and clean it off, drive up the bass and treble, they went and mixed it as though they wanted it to sell in the modern market. In short, I love it.

  • meanwhile lurking by a stone in the mud...

  • This is the song that made me fall in love with Genesis. I have no idea what it means, but it kicks major ass.

  • Genesis going Reggae :) So great!

  • what what are you say?

  • "and then something spoke and this is what it said to me"....waaooo waaoo woo waahh ah ah hahahaha,,

  • i love the live version of this.this is such a great song

  • I love this song! It's one of my very favorites... :D

  • Everybody bitches about Genesis without PG - I'm a huge fan of Pete's solo stuff, I think when he's at his best he is THE best - but I have yet to hear any PG era Genesis that i like as much as this stuff.

    Brother Ron

  • Go see Turn It On Again brotha! turnitonagainDOTcom

  • awesome song

  • RockOn

  • Mighty Genesis is tied w/ Reo Speedwagon as greatest bands ever.

    Thanks for great video:)

  • Reo Speedwagon??

    You sir, are a crackhead.

  • SNOWSTORMCAN: Gee, thanks. Any other complements for me? :)

    God Bless You & Yours:)

  • I was initially disappointed that Lurker was truncated, but it works. The Three Sides Live video was my introduction to Genesis - tragically, I could probably recite all the Hugh Fielder interviews word for word...

  • I have a version of this song, November 1983 into the Mama tour. They opened the show with Dodo. It's just amazing!!! It's available for download on e-mule.

  • Overdrive type effect on the bass pedals (Banks) probably helps make the guitar sound even heavier when in unison.

  • are you sure???...if you right no matters

i played with my guitar with a full gain overdrive and i aswer the sound is similar

  • Great performance. Anybody ever figure out that riddle? "Clothes of brass and hair of brown, seldom need to breathe, don't need no wings to fly. And a heart of stone, and a fear of fire and water, who am I?" Maybe it's like, metaphorical or something. ;) I love the way he goes into conductor mode! Earlier Genesis might be more "prog", but this era they were tighter, cleaner, more focused, more powerful.

  • The answer is a Submarine. A B-side was supposed to follow this as part of the suite called "Submarine"

  • Hmmm... Heart of stone? What plutonium? Nuclear sub? Hair of brown? Maybe a "tin soldier" ON a submarine...

  • Hair of brown was to be seaweed after the submarine surfaced. Tony Banks answered this in an interview during the WCD tour. In fact, the working titles for the songs were "German 1 and 2" and the sound was influenced by some old U-boat movie.

  • Cool. I think I get it now. :0)

  • Brilliant. Thats bothered me for fifteen years! Does the track Who Dunnit? have some sort of link to this as well? I'm sure i remember reading a ridiculously intricate breakdown of the lyrics. It may of course be complete bollocks

  • LOVE this song, another proof that Genesis never abandoned Prog Rock after Steve Hackett left.

  • yes is right redxivpr !!! who said that genesis is not played rock in the eithies...???

  • three sides live!!!!!!!!!! a classic masterpiece for classic rock

  • The drums are better in the studio

  • What a song!! Very much stronger that the studio tapes I think. I love the way Phil sings this song. It's a perfect song.

  • Huge, strong song, underestimated one

  • Mike Used the fender custom version isn't ??

  • Nope, that's a standard issue Stratocaster he's using here, albeit outfitted with an Alembic "Stratoblaster" pre-amp. The Fender Custom shop didn't exist when this footage was shot.

  • ups!!

  • i like that!

  • The One best Song The Guitar is great very heavy amanzing!!!!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!! FIND SOMEONE ELSE INT HE 80's MAKING COOL STUFF LIKE THIS I DARE YOU.

  • Surprisingly great quality of the video.

  • `meanwhile lurking by a stone in the mud two eyes looked to see what i was` LOVE IT, thanks for sharing it

  • thanks for sharing man .. very good love this song!
