It's a shame he was never given a chance to develop. We often put him wide on the left when he came on as a sub. He should have been in the middle and Speed should have guided him. I used to watch Newcastle's 2002/2003 season dvd all the time, and every time it got to a part in a game where Viana had the ball i'd literally rewind his 'Viana moments' over and over again just because i can't get enough of how elegantly he moves the ball. If he played in the centre of midfield just behind the two strikers he would have been amazing! The two freekicks at the end of your clip rivals Becks!! :)

@Bennyboy138 its actually a habit among many managers to play sublime playmakers on the left wing.........it works for some doesn't or others........alex hleb started out as a playmaker.........but over time his managers at vfb and arsenal deployed him on the left wing with the hope that they would dictate play from the left , which is a good tactic.........tomas rosicky is a success........unfortunately it didnt work out for ppl like viana.

But today the central midfielders have to pass , mrk , tackle , score. It is the most demanding position of the pitch in my opinion. And Viana as i guess is a classic 10 that means he is not good at his defencive duties... Excellent passer though...

Makes me so annoyed. He is played out of position for well over a year, until his confidence is so low, that when he does get a few games(literally)in the centre of midfield his confidence has totally gone, and everyone griefs him!!!! When Woody signed for us, he said in an interview that the players were good, and he'd thought it couldn't get better until he saw Hugo's left foot!! That is why I got my shirt printed "Hugo nna be a legend" as soon as he signed.
I got my shirt printed cos I saw him in the Portugal youth team in the Championships and was the main man, and that was with Quaresma and Ronaldo in the same team. Highlights that we have a habit of playing players out of position.
Never saw him play at Newcastle, but man! He's a genius. Great vid!

Viana was absolute class.

Made the complete wrong move in joining newcastle.

great song man ... which is the name of it? btw i thought Viana was older and he is just 25 he is really intelligent and his passing is awesome. But today the central midfielders have to pass , mrk , tackle , score. It is the most demanding position of the pitch in my opinion. And Viana as i guess is a classic 10 that means he is not good at his defencive duties... Excellent passer though...

Makes me so annoyed. He is played out of position for well over a year, until his confidence is so low, that when he does get a few games(literally)in the centre of midfield his confidence has totally gone, and everyone griefs him!!!! When Woody signed for us, he said in an interview that the players were good, and he'd thought it couldn't get better until he saw Hugo's left foot!! That is why I got my shirt printed "Hugo nna be a legend" as soon as he signed.
