wow...there is so much more to this piece, so many colors and voices and effects and music! This probably made Rachmaninoff cry out in agony...it was so awful. it's un Etude-TABLEAU. He missed the tableau part. This was the farthest thing from a painting or a picture.
Fantastic! I thought only the young Richter could play this etude so fast ... and by the way the public could have applauded more, the little mistake at the end did not spoil anything at all ... it was not nice they applauded so coldly.
Yes, I saw it already about two weeks ago ... thanks for telling me. It was this video that convinced me that Gavrilov can be compared with the late Svjatoslav Richter. Actually I am now exchanging with Andrei and see he was not very fond of Richter, and announces a grandiose peak in his career, within the next decade, promising to surpass not only Richter but other piano geniuses. I believe much of his talent is not yet known to the great public. It was not to me just a few weeks ago.
Richter version sounds more like a story, a scene, which is what Tableaux means: a short story or scene. This version sounds more like a academic exercise.
that's not difficult to be more exiting in piano playing then richter, but this is indeed much to fast, however, I am very happy gawrilov is back on stage!!!!
I will comment back instead, saying that Richter had perfect dynamics in his performance, while Gavrilov, despite being extraordinary good, severly lacks proper dynamics in several fragments of this performance.
However, this piece is technically monstruous and I really liked it!
This is an incredible treat. I truly love his playing. His Rachmaninov is so special.Thank you very much for posting this on youtube.I can't wait to hear him live again.
I personally think this performance is a cacophony of wrong notes and key slapping, quite a mess

Some of you people are on crack--this is amazing piano playing despite a certain dryness

i don´t like his play in this etude, but i think we must recognize that it´s a very exiciting and wild performance of this etude, powerful and
exccentric

too fast, too mechanical for my taste

I would agree. Technique is perfect for troupes of pianists today but such performances may lack soul.

I hate his playing - much too fast, too many wrong notes and no feeling at all. He sounds like he's just trying to rush to get through it.
