As an old Marine combat veteran I always thought that there were only two types of people who could understand Marines;

2. The enemy they fight.

For to me, our flag represents all that have fallen,and the survivors still dealing w/ war everyday,since they entered combat. Back to the song,basically at that time, I figured if I died...why not be buried w/ Dress Blues.

This is a confused somewhat contradictory song. It makes the point that the Iraq war is a 'hollywood war' and makes fun of 'American boys' and that militaristic and machismo that has sent so many willingly to their deaths. But then there's that bit about being a marine at the beginning. And, as heartbreaking as this song is, surely its more heartbreaking to have your country bombed into the stone age and your everyday life fairly obliterated by people trying to deliver you freedom.

I would just like to say that I am against the war because I think it is a war for the wrong reasons. I think it is a war to benefit wealthy people at the expense of innocent lives. However, that does not mean that I can't feel what this song is saying. I still have complete respect and gratitude for the people who would give up their lives for their country, or for what they thought was the freedom of our country. Great song. Despite this view of it being a 'hollywood war', these soldiers are still fighting for our freedom. The service of the military allows us to sleep well at night, drink our choice of beers in bars, and cheer on our favorite teams in stadiums. Thank God for our Military, and especially, thank God that the Marines are on our side.
This war is not about fighting for our freedom. It's about fighting for the freedom of a bunch of Iraqis that don't even matter to us. I am in the military. I lose brothers everyday and people like you don't even truly have a grasp of what's going on in the world.

Yeah. It was absolutely for some rich mans investments. We did it just for Oil- as evidenced by the huge drop in Gas prices over the past few years. I have a cousin that did a few tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, another that is going over soon, as well as a few friends that have gone over.

I was lucky enough to get to see him "making his bones" with the DBT.

Beautiful, touching, heartfelt song.
All you folks with your arguments about the war: let it go. This song is about losing a friend, at a young age. It happened to me, and you never forget the friends of your youth.
We just get older, having our personal problems, living our lives, wishing and hoping. They don't have to deal with any of this. They just lay there, forever young in our memories, alive in our dreams. Or, in the case of Mr. Isbell's friend, "asleep in his dress blues".

In response to the "hollywood war" part and everyone talkin bout it.. well, i think its 'easy' to call this war that bc of how the MEDIA has portrayed this war.. but it is, in fact, a war that is serving a purpose. If only the ignorant knew how great of a change iraq has had..but people dont care how anotha country has improved bc the ignorant and the media are both selfish. and b4 anyone says anything, i am very knowledgable about the troops and the war bc my bf is currently deployed to iraq.

I think I speak for everyone in wishing your boyfriend safety, luck and much praise for serving our country. However, the Iraqi war was a strategic blunder of epic proportions, fought under both faulty and insincere motives. There are many people across the world living in dire straights, under tyranny & repression and extreme danger, and the Bush administration turned their head to them. Validating the Iraqi invasion under the premise of restoring order and freedom is convenient, but illogical.

What I love about Ipod buds is getting lost in DBT. I didn't know Matt but I know Greenhill and Listerhill and Zip City. I shook my brother's hand as he left Florence for the Sand. Am i missing something here?, as much as i like your music, as a Marine myself i find it offensive that you think we don't know what is expected of us,and the dangers we face when we sign on the dotted line! Believe me i feel for the loss of your friend,i do,but this song makes him out to be a victim of his own stupidity, instead of the brave Marine he surely was...And the line about the Hollywood war was tasteless as well!

I was an infantryman in the army, saw stuff in iraq I wouldn't want anyone to see, but guess what, I SIGNED UP. Nobody makes us go and YOU are not making the sacrifice, so you got nothing to say. I don't want to hear you dis-honor my dead friends.
To the Drive By truckers, I've always been a fan of your music, but this song, and "that man I shot" really pissed me off. You still play well, but lets leave the political/war stuff out of it.

it wouldn't be right to have the Drive-By Truckers members sensor their true beliefs, and in turn express their true emotions as well as they have in song. That is what makes them special. If you don't like it, take it with a grain of salt.
Would you ask the same of all of Neil Young's songs? Or Rage Against the Machine?
It's a good thing artist's still hold the creative hand in this modern world.

How are they "dishonoring you"? They are simply taking a tragedy of our wars, that unfortunately happened to a fellow soldier, that someway effected them and the people that cared about him. You sir are dishonoring yourself, you who are fighting for our freedom of rights, by keeping the Americans your fighting for that may not be in the military from expressing their feelings. I'm not suggesting they censor themselves, I'd prefer the music without the political stuff. I had just listened to "that man I shot" and was unhappy about it when I wrote the above post. this song was tasteful and respectful. The only line I didn't like was, "you never planned on the bombs in sand"... I think everyone who goes over there realizes that IEDs are a very real and deadly threat. In spite of that, these men and women still sign up, and that fact should not be over looked.

wbedient, i tend to aggree with u on that, bc every single man or woman knows the dangers when they sign up. they are all willing to put their life at risk..its very honerable. it still doesnt take away from the message tho. to me, it touches me that someone wud write a song like this bc the marines may plan on the "bombs n the sand" and are willing..but to the family, friends, spouses, etc the bombs r their worst nightmare. i bet the family of this marine was very touched and honored.

I support our troops 100%. I'm thankful for all soldiers and their families. My boyfriend is a Marine and what those men and women go through is incredible. Semper Fi.

This is am amazing song, thank you for creating it. My husband is currently serving in Iraq and he is my hero. The military men and women deserve a ton of respect, they fight for the freedoms of this country and the often get brought down and become mocked and hated for their service. Those people who do that have no clue about what life is like for a military man/woman. Thank you so much for supporting our troops! Semper Fi!

I would just like to say that I am against the war because I think it is a war for the wrong reasons. I think it is a war to benefit wealthy people at the expense of innocent lives. However, that does not mean that I can't feel what this song is saying. I still have complete respect and gratitude for the people who would give up their lives for their country, or for what they thought was the freedom of our country. I just wish that they weren't wrong.

Great song. Despite this view of it being a 'hollywood war', these soldiers are still fighting for our freedom. The service of the military allows us to sleep well at night, drink our choice of beers in bars, and cheer on our favorite teams in stadiums. Thank God for our Military, and especially, thank God that the Marines are on our side.

Yeah. It was absolutely for some rich mans investments. We did it just for Oil- as evidenced by the huge drop in Gas prices over the past few years. I have a cousin that did a few tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, another that is going over soon, as well as a few friends that have gone over.
Just enjoy the song, don't post ignorant baseless opinions.
