  • @ThePathologist123 It's pretty simple, actually. It's based around G, Em, C, and D. The arpeggio follows the G chord pattern. I could make a lesson for it if you want.

  • As an old Marine combat veteran I always thought that there were only two types of people who could understand Marines;

    1. Marines

    2. The enemy they fight.

Jason just might be a third. In any case this a very moving peice of art and I am now remembering (as if I could ever forget) the faces of every young Marine I couldn't bring home alive.

I guess I've got a hell of a night ahead of me...

  • @ChuckSnow5 You're never alone brother, you'll ALWAYS have Marines to look out for you. Semper Fidelis brother!

  • HOORAH !!

  • Semper Fi ! Thanks to all Veterans and all branches of our great nation !

  • Of all the songs in the world written about the war, this one still brings me to a sobbing wreck every time. I'll listen to it knowing damn well that I'm gonna cry. I miss my brothers in arms. Even the ones I didn't have the honor of fighting alongside. I love them all. They are me and I am them. We've done and seen things normal people couldn't do. It wasn't hate. It was love. I miss them all, and I live every day trying to lead by example in their honor.

  • @gogoandywolf Well said sir, thanks for your service. ( my pop was 101'st Airborne Ranger in '69 ).

I was 21 in 1990 when I joined the Corps after seeing our flag being burned in Iraq on tv. after coming home from work,well...it damned well pissed me off ! For to me, our flag represents all that have fallen, and the survivors still dealing w/ war everyday, since they entered combat. Back to the song, basically at that time, I figured if I died...why not be buried w/ Dress Blues.

  • @allengoodman69 My stepfather was in the Corps. He crossed into Kuwait as a Lance Corporal alongside his father, who was a master gunny.

  • Excellent song . . excellent recording and video . .

  • Send him to the troops, not Kid Rock and Three Doors Down.

  • Great song ... So much meaning .... That Alabama boy can write song songs .... God bless our troops!!!

  • Thank You to all American troops who have given the ultimate sacrifice. People may not agree with the war(s). It doesn't matter if you do or you don't. These men and women of our armed forces have our liberty and safety in their minds when they set out to fight. They even fight for people who aren't Americans. Let us all salute them for giving their lives for liberty and justice for all. And if any of you are want to spit on them, I spit on you. America. Love Her or leave Her.

  • So much soul..

  • I'd like to learn how to play this song. :)

  • Simply one of the most gracious and respectful songs ever.

Every one of us has at least 2-3 people in our lives that this reminds us of and we need to share it with the people who don't know how to express what Jason said.

  • Thanks for your music, music that means something, music that kicks ass and takes no prisoners. Thanks for remembering the fallen ones like the Marine in your song. Best wishes and long life to the DBT.

  • Jason Isbell is probably the greatest song writer I've ever seen. :)

  • My favorite song at the moment. Leave for Parris Island in 13 days. 0311!

  • God bless Jason Isbell and the truckers.

  • Oorah Marine.

  • Should be mandatory listening for all music fans, good stuff.

  • Marine Corps Infantry right here.... i get out in 41 days... but i'll never forget the people and experiences over the last 4 years... great song, right here... if you've been in the corps... this one hits home...

  • This song reminds me of Marine LCpl Rick Centanni who died in Afganistan 10 days before his 20th birthday. You touched so many people, Rick. Rest in peace now, Marine. You did very well.

  • jason isbell is mah cousin!

  • i love my marine <33 come home soon and safe babe. i love you.

  • so glad I found y'alls channel ...

  • beautiful, and poignant ... thank you for sharing that heartfelt performance

  • No matter what listening to this always makes me damn proud to be a Marine. It also makes you reflect on the sacrifices that all of our military is making right now.

  • love this!!!

  • I LOVE MY MARINE

  • this song doesn't talk about Politics what so ever so leave that behind. This is about a Marine who made a difference in the world, and wanted to stand for something more than the average human. Semper Fi Marine, your job is done.

  • brings a tear to a glass eye

  • God Bless the USMC. Im srry my brothers. I fd up . Now I have no peace....

  • great song.thanks to Matt and all your Marine brothers and all those who wear the uniform and keep us all safe.

  • Oorah! Once a Marine ALWAYS a Marine.

  • Sorry you lost your friend, God bless you. A very moving song.

  • With all due respect, i think you might be reading in to this song a little to much. More specifically the term 'Hollywood War'. It wasn't really until the first gulf war when war gained the Hollywood aspect Via the used of embedded reporters... A really sad, yet uplifting song this one is, the lyrics are haunting and really make one question what is the right thing to do... "You never planed on the bombs in the sand or sleeping in your dress blues..."

  • no such thing as former marine ... Once a marine Always a marine

  • Check my page for "7 Mile Island" by Jason and the 400 Unit!

  • hoorah

  • to fight somebody's hollywood war...

  • leave your damn politics out of this..this has nothing to do with it.

  • @GunnerMan23 really? my politics? I didn't write the song man... listen again maybe

  • @GunnerMan23 - True statement. I imagine (and I can only imagine) that Jason I. had the same feeling when he wrote this that E. Clapton had when he wrote "Tears In Heaven". Sounds like a songwriter mourning the loss of a friend to me. That's all we listeners need to hear and anything else has nothing to do with it.

  • just saw him in columbia sc last night, it was awesome

  • i still cry every time i hear it.

  • this guy was a former marine. not an ex marine

  • @fattymcfatcakepie What is a former Marine?

  • @Davemercd its what a marine is when they end their service because no matter what once we earn the title of marine we are one til the day we die...its nothing like the other branches

  • @brainh20 There is no such thing as a former Marine or Ex-Marine. A Marine is a Marine.

  • @fattymcfatcakepie not even a former Marine, still is a Marine

  • @fattymcfatcakepie Thank God somebody knows that there is no such thing as an Ex Marine. Once a Marine Always a Marine. OohRah.

  • amazing song. thats it. great story.

  • Great song, really gets to you.

  • mmmm... everybody feelin nice and sentimental here, looks like it eh?

oh well. btw i have nothing but respect for the folks overseas...

  • Cant get enough of this guy. Loved him with DBT and solo. Doesnt he look like Matthew Stafford by the way?

  • Amazing song. I did not personally know Matt Connley, but being from the Shoals, the news of what happend touched everyone in the area rather you personally knew him or not.

  • ISBELL raises the bar on songwriting! hands down one of best out there! and he's so freakin young!

  • Yeah, he's the real deal.

I was lucky enough to get to see him "making his bones" with the DBT.

Then I saw him with the 400 Unit last April. Dammit, boy! He just gets better and better!

May Jason live to rock for a while longer.

  • Semper Fidelis!

  • great song

  • I want this to be played at my funeral, its one of the reasons i joined. shit still gives me goosebumps.

  • Courageous men and women putting their lives on the line in Iraq but for what? Bring them home. Before you criticize me, know that I lost someone there and they had utter belief in the Marines and no belief in the mission.

  • if you get a chance, pick up the book america alone by mark steyn. sorry for your loss. hopefully this might help put some sort of reason to what is happening there - and in the world.

  • Great book....another is Real Stars by Ben stein...God Bless our troops.

  • Beautiful, touching, heartfelt song.

All you folks with your arguments about the war: let it go. This song is about losing a friend, at a young age. It happened to me, and you never forget the friends of your youth.

We just get older, having our personal problems, living our lives, wishing and hoping. They don't have to deal with any of this. They just lay there, forever young in our memories, alive in our dreams. Or, in the case of Mr. Isbell's friend, "asleep in his dress blues".

  • This is one of his best songs. Hate it if you must, but it is honest and straight forward. I was in Lebanon in 83, nobody jokes over there. Just ask the folks left in the towers. Reality sucks, get over it..

  • I like that he left DBT, it gives us two great ones to follow. Jason solo and DBT.

  • In response to the "hollywood war" part and everyone talkin bout it.. well, i think its 'easy' to call this war that bc of how the MEDIA has portrayed this war.. but it is, in fact, a war that is serving a purpose. If only the ignorant knew how great of a change iraq has had..but people dont care how anotha country has improved bc the ignorant and the media are both selfish. and b4 anyone says anything, i am very knowledgable about the troops and the war bc my bf is currently deployed to iraq.

  • I think I speak for everyone in wishing your boyfriend safety, luck and much praise for serving our country. However, the Iraqi war was a strategic blunder of epic proportions, fought under both faulty and insincere motives. There are many people across the world living in dire straights, under tyranny & repression and extreme danger, and the Bush administration turned their head to them. Validating the Iraqi invasion under the premise of restoring order and freedom is convenient, but illogical.

  • As a Marine I know there is only one way to sleep in your Dress Blues. This song is great and really hits home! God bless our troops and my brothers in Dress Blues

  • As a Marine and Iraq vet (and a music fan) I can say that no song I've ever heard comes close to capturing the detail and pure emotion of a lost brother like this song. Breaks me down every time. Thanks.

  • What I love about Ipod buds is getting lost in DBT. I didn't know Matt but I know Greenhill and Listerhill and Zip City. I shook my brother's hand as he left Florence for the Sand. My time was done before these wars. He came home. We drank sweet tea in styrofoam cups to celebrate. Semper Fi, Matt, your OUR Hero.

  • my apologizes..DriveByTruckers!...my post didn't go through,..forgive me for suggesting you censor!..

  • Not a problem. :)

  • Many gave nothing...

    Some gave all...

    Semper-Fi.

  • now your censoring comments?...typical!

  • No comments have been censored.

  • Semper Fi! Lives mean something in america. They should not be taken for granted.

  • Yeah your missing alot. Listen...Your statement is just the brain washed shit he is talking about. Face it dude the war is not worth the lives lost. You are still alive there sitting at your desk. If you had saw anything over there...Blood all over when you watched your friend get blown all to shit...My question to you is my friend...Well?

  • Am i missing something here?, as much as i like your music, as a Marine myself i find it offensive that you think we don't know what is expected of us,and the dangers we face when we sign on the dotted line! Believe me i feel for the loss of your friend,i do,but this song makes him out to be a victim of his own stupidity, instead of the brave Marine he surely was...And the line about the Hollywood war was tasteless as well!

  • I was an infantryman in the army, saw stuff in iraq I wouldn't want anyone to see, but guess what, I SIGNED UP. Nobody makes us go and YOU are not making the sacrifice, so you got nothing to say. I don't want to hear you dis-honor my dead friends.

To the Drive By truckers, I've always been a fan of your music, but this song, and "that man I shot" really pissed me off. You still play well, but lets leave the political/war stuff out of it.

  • it wouldn't be right to have the Drive-By Truckers members sensor their true beliefs, and in turn express their true emotions as well as they have in song. That is what makes them special. If you don't like it, take it with a grain of salt.

Would you ask the same of all of Neil Young's songs? Or Rage Against the Machine?

It's a good thing artist's still hold the creative hand in this modern world.

  • How are they "dishonoring you"? They are simply taking a tragedy of our wars, that unfortunately happened to a fellow soldier, that someway effected them and the people that cared about him. You sir are dishonoring yourself, you who are fighting for our freedom of rights, by keeping the Americans your fighting for that may not be in the military from expressing their feelings. Don't be a close-minded jackass.

  • I'm not suggesting they censor themselves, I'd prefer the music without the political stuff. I had just listened to "that man I shot" and was unhappy about it when I wrote the above post. this song was tasteful and respectful. The only line I didn't like was, "you never planned on the bombs in sand"... I think everyone who goes over there realizes that IEDs are a very real and deadly threat. In spite of that, these men and women still sign up, and that fact should not be over looked.

  • wbedient, i tend to aggree with u on that, bc every single man or woman knows the dangers when they sign up. they are all willing to put their life at risk..its very honerable. it still doesnt take away from the message tho. to me, it touches me that someone wud write a song like this bc the marines may plan on the "bombs n the sand" and are willing..but to the family, friends, spouses, etc the bombs r their worst nightmare. i bet the family of this marine was very touched and honored.

  • Where would music be today without politically themed songs? Just because you don't agree with the message doesn't justify you telling Mr. Isbell what he should and should not write about.

  • dude its a great song about his friend dont be hatin

  • beautiful. semper fi.

  • I support our troops 100%. I'm thankful for all soldiers and their families. My boyfriend is a Marine and what those men and women go through is incredible. Semper Fi.

  • This is am amazing song, thank you for creating it. My husband is currently serving in Iraq and he is my hero. The military men and women deserve a ton of respect, they fight for the freedoms of this country and the often get brought down and become mocked and hated for their service. Those people who do that have no clue about what life is like for a military man/woman. Thank you so much for supporting our troops! Semper Fi!

  • I would just like to say that I am against the war because I think it is a war for the wrong reasons. I think it is a war to benefit wealthy people at the expense of innocent lives. However, that does not mean that I can't feel what this song is saying. I still have complete respect and gratitude for the people who would give up their lives for their country, or for what they thought was the freedom of our country. I just wish that they weren't wrong.

  • Please keep in mind there are two wars, thank you. i know he is singing in reference to the young Marine's death in Iraq, but it is a disservice to my friends to forget Afghanistan.

    USArmy

  • There are no words to describe this song.

    Gives me goosebumps.

  • Great song. Despite this view of it being a 'hollywood war', these soldiers are still fighting for our freedom. The service of the military allows us to sleep well at night, drink our choice of beers in bars, and cheer on our favorite teams in stadiums. Thank God for our Military, and especially, thank God that the Marines are on our side.

  • This war is not about fighting for our freedom. It's about fighting for the freedom of a bunch of Iraqis that don't even matter to us. I am in the military. I lose brothers everyday and people like you don't even truly have a grasp of what's going on in the world.

  • Nonetheless, I hope one day that people like you wake up and realize that there is no better feeling that doing something for a greater good, even if that is just for one other person. I am not even all that mad at you, more just disappointed, and hopeful that one day you'll get your priorities straight son.

  • Javad,

If what you remember most from this concert, this song, is that you were blazed outta your tree in the front row, you got your priorities wrong my friend. It makes me sick when my friends, my classmates, go off to war and you get to enjoy being lazy and contributing nothing to society. Shoudl everyone join the military? No, that is not democracy.

  • I remember you, Lance Corporal Steven Stacey!

  • This is my "Simple Man" - A true southern ballad - Thanks JI

  • YOU ROCK Jason!!

    WE LOVE U~

  • Men of ignorance started this war. It will be men like this who end it. Best war song I ever heard.

    Strong as zoo dirt.

  • just an overall great song. still wish jason was still with DBT

  • Good song, lousy war. Bring em home.

  • BigStorm99, lowering gas prices??? no they're going up...? anyway aside from that, great song. no matter if the wars right or wrong, always support the troops. they risk it all for you

  • class act lads.......

  • Support the troops, war as a last resort!

  • Great song, always support our troops

  • Don't judge the war on this youtube thread.... This song is for one soldier who died.

It's not a right or wrong situation....

  • yeah, don't judge the war based on this song or this thread.

base it on the bare FACTS that it's failing.

  • The war isn't failing, violence is down over 80% in iraq, we didn't take a single casualty in Baghdad last month. You sir, should face the FACTS.

  • super

  • Good Song this was is for some rich mans investments..u all can think what u want but its true..come on look at all the shit tht is goin on...so before u all start critiqiein this think to u self what would you do if ur son or daughter or friend or mother father or husband wife died?? then tell me what u think...ok?

  • Yeah. It was absolutely for some rich mans investments. We did it just for Oil- as evidenced by the huge drop in Gas prices over the past few years. I have a cousin that did a few tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, another that is going over soon, as well as a few friends that have gone over.

Just enjoy the song, don't post ignorant baseless opinions.

  • Man just shut up and listen to the song. Show some respect man

  • Since when is political discourse taboo?

  • wow

  • Amazing song!

  • Hey MadridinNJ, out of this whole song, you have to pick out "Someone's hollywood war"-- an accurate description of this worthless God-forsaken war, that has killed so many." Please, take your political comments elsewhere.

  • Um, it's a HIGHLY political song; seems like the most appropriate place to me.

  • Guess what? I don't care. I'm not like you; I don't need anyone to validate my opinion for me. And a lot more people agree with me than you think.

    This just in: bite me.

  • "Someone's hollywood war"-- an accurate description of this worthless God-forsaken war, that has killed so many.

  • And when he gets to heaven,

To St. Peter he will Tell,

    One more Marine reporting,

I've done my time in Hell.

  • truely amazing and soul inspiring I love this guy

  • this is soo amazing.......i love dbt and i will miss you JASON....i love this song.......amazing
