  • I have three of the floating book stackers xD

  • I want amazing floating book stacks! In fact...I want a ton more books in general. But I want a whole ton of amazing floating book stacks too! Yay books!

    DFTBA. Love all you smarticles.

  • hehe. "semi famous"!

  • Nowadays people put 100 books inside of a 10 inch tablet : (

  • This makes me feel like i should have more books.

  • I see Tithe.

  • You make it sound like libraries are the pirates of the non-interent.

  • ...HOLY CRAP I HAVE SO MANY BOOKS THAT YOU DO TOO HANK!

  • I feel like...the book exchange sounds exactly like a library but more complicated.

  • You know how I have come to solve this problem? I have a nook.

  • I love The Book Exchange. My favorite store in Missoula, by far!!!

  • I might move to Montana because that seems to be the only place IN THE WORLD that has "The Book Exchange" damn

  • I got those floating shelves after seeing this video, and I have many random stacks throughout my room, and I have a gigantic row of books at the foot of my bed, and there are four rows on top of that row... It's very precarious situation whenever I want to get a book from the bottom row...

  • I have three book cases in my room of books I've read plus a drawer with books I haven't read and various stacks with both read and non-read books in various places.

  • My books are currently homeless and lying randomly around my house at the risk of my dad throwing them away cuz of the recent flood in Thailand. Schtoopid flood. =w=

  • And then the Ereader came out

  • GET A NOOK!

  • I have the same Calvin and Hobbes. :3

  • where does one get the amazing floating bookstack things‽ those would solve my endless dilemma of too many books/not nearly enough space/constantly getting more books.

  • i love the smell of books

  • And so the idea of the Kindle was born! ...I don't think manufacturers understand the need to have books all around us nerdfighters... to have that physical relationship with the text where I can remember my favorite part is page 63, second paragraph and then flip right to it.

  • I love being surrounded by books. I can never really bring myself to get rid of them. I'm just starting to run out of space on my giant bookshelf. I still have quite a bit of space to fill with books. It makes me pretty excited when I get new books.

  • JONATHAN STRANGE!

  • no. the actual book is important. It just isn't the same when you have to read it electronically. Obviously, you put them in cardboard boxes with a full-written inventory on the side of the box. Then put the box somewhere that isn't going to drive you mildly insane or make you trip and fall. I mean honestly...

  • this is why they invented the kindle

  • OOOOOOHHHHH Hank, you said libary....oh Hank, Hank, Hank...

  • hello ibooks and kindle. genius.

  • i have never read a full book, cover to cover in my life...i wanna be a movie script writter...

  • I wish to become an author. If I do and my books are read by people I will be content. I personally think as long as people are reading- we should be happy. I mean, sure, it would be fantastic if I was a best selling author and got paid lots of money for my books but what is more important is that people are reading *something* that has meaning, good grammar (I'm working on mine xD) and is longer than 140 characters(:

  • I've been an avid reader since 4th grade. I LOVE books and I LOVE reading. I have a Kindle, I've had this Kindle for 2 and a half years now. I LOVE MY KINDLE!! It's like carrying a library around with you. I used to take the book I was reading everywhere with me, just in case I had to stand in line or wait for a friend or what have you. If I were to finish reading that particular book while out, I'd have nothing to read. Since I got my Kindle that problem is solved. Plus e-books are cheaper. ;)

  • I used to look down on e-readers... until I got one. It's convenient in the sense that ebooks are cheaper, don't require paper, much easier to store, and, as john green says in a video years after this one, what's more important that people read, not how they read.

...actual books are still better though, but ebooks are great too.

  • CALVIN AND HOBBES!!!! :D

  • Was this pre-Kindle? :O

  • @ShaddapaYoFace I do believe so.... in that dramatic pause I actually wikipedia'd the Kindle, which debuted in November of 2007 ;)

  • watching them all!

  • I love books! I think Nooks and Kindles are evil anti-books. >_<

  • @MoonintheClouds I love books too, but I have to disagree with you. I believe that Nooks and Kindles are a very efficient and handy way to read books. One reason why I like my Nook is that its much easier to carry around than a physical book. I love my Nook because of the availability of all the books wherever you are.

  • The awkward moment when Hank invents the nook......lol

  • I. Have. Books. EVERYWHERE. literally, covering almost every surface. Anyone know where one could invest in these mysterious book-floatation devices?

  • I have lots of random stacks! And question: is it bad if you read a book so much it gets torn up?

  • I have the same 3-volume complete Calvin and HObbes!

  • only reason I hate australia...books are so expensive...I will never have this many books...T-T

  • I prefer reading and having books rather than them being on a hard drive or electrical device. A book can take up space, and has a certain smell or look to it. It has almost a sentimental type of feel when you look at it of feel it. I know when I try to sell my books, I immediately snatch them back. There's something about a book, how it grab's your emotions and makes you smile or cry or laugh, that an electronic device can supply, but it's not quite the same, that you can't quite get rid of it.

  • Johnathan Strange and Mr. Norrell !

Returning, yes, but it has been seen somewhere other than my bedside table!

This calls for a happy dance.

  • Please, oh please! Where can I buy one of those wall shelf things?

  • Did they not have the 4 minute rule back then?

  • You had me at the three volume complete Calvin and Hobbes.

  • Wow. Taking out books and exchanging them for more books after you've read them... sounds kinda like a... library.

  • Full bookshelves make a house a home.

  • I love random stacks of books everywhere. :D

  • I think this is where the Kindle came from...

  • I have 300 books, and since I'm only 17 and therefore still living at home, these are all in my room... I don't download books, unless they're free, but I do download fanfiction to read on my computer. I agree with lemonice2700, but fanfiction is the exception to the rule

  • Star Trek novels aren't embarrassing. I have them all over my room (I also have a tribble in Harry Potter glasses, and a Klingon Bird of Prey playing hat rack to my Jayne Hat).,

  • Hank, you have predicted the future there will in fact be books on a hard drive...

  • 1:38 Johnath Strange & Mr. Norrell YES!

  • I'm fine with reading off a screen, but I like the way hardcover books look. They're just so fancy, almost like ornaments on a bookshelf.

The only thing I like about paperback editions is the price.

  • They were returning the book I just read at 3:00. I love that author.

  • Where can I get those floating bookshelves????? I'm kinda sick of having to relegate all of my manga to the hall closet because my nonfiction takes up the bottom shelf of my bookcase.

By the way, I notice you have D. Gray-man. Win, my friend. You clearly DFTBA.

  • It's so weird how he doesn't even mention eBooks... because they WEREN'T INVENTED YET!!

  • afksdj- Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrel <3

  • At 1:44 is of Montreal's Hissing Fauna!!! That's amazing!

  • Omg I have those Calvin and Hobbes books

  • Well, you didn't have this in two thousand and seven, but now you can get a kindle.

  • over 4 mins!Punishment time!Nerdfighters think of some punishment ideas!

  • @TheAglover26 This was four years ago. I think the time has passed.

  • @GONEmypurpleflapjack I was just kidding.

  • I just started Jonathon Strange and Mr Norrel...great so far :D

  • Ok, I desperately need those floating book book stacks...I am completely out of shelf room, and I adopted a few more from the store...I'm tempted to hunt down milk crates to use at the moment,

  • The complete Calvin and Hobbes?!?!?

    Soo jealous right now.. :S

  • Kindle!

  • When i own my own house i am having those floating bookstacks everywhere i wont need any of my bookcases anymore

  • I have one three shelf bookshelf. and one shelf of that is completely taken up by CDs. So the rest of my books sit in two piles on my dresser, or they live in my backpack, in my record crates, in boxes or in my locker.

  • If I lived in a town large enough to have a book exchange, I might read a lot more.

I don't like buying books I haven't read, and I read wayy too slowly to go to the library without keeping the book forever. Also, my library is itty bitty, so it doesn't have much I'm interested in. (And by that, I mean they don't have anything by John. Sadface.)

  • "It would be easier if these books were on my hard drive instead of on my wall. OMG THIS IS WHERE THEY GOT THE IDEA FOR THE KINDLE

  • Haha. I've started watching Vlogbrothers from the very beginning and I have my Kindle sitting next to me :)

  • Oh technology how I love thee...Kindles are awesome...solves all of these issues.

  • I have way more books than I'm able to read in.. a year. Or two. Or three. Or more. Sometimes I go through my big bookshelf, and I think: "Will I ever read that book?" "When will I read that book?" And if the answer is no, probably not or not until I've read 50 other books in my bookshelf, then I register it at bookcrossing(dot)com, and set it free, so other people may pick it up and read it.

  • I gasped when I saw the Calvin and Hobbs collection.

  • But hank when we finally become able to put books on hard drives you dont like that idea

  • Omg they were exchanging tithe? I -3 that book

  • fast foward to ereaders and ebooks lolz

  • I like having books, even if they are all over the place. I don't like reading on my computer, or any other sort of technological medium because that takes away some of the book's presence. A book is something you can hold and touch and write on and turn its pages. They have a very distinct smell and feel. And when you've finished the book, you can close it, hold it in your hands, feel the weight of the knowledge you've transfered into your brain, and put it on your shelf as an accomplishment.

  • French the llama! I want floating book stacks!

  • 49000!

  • The Katherine just became even more awesome in my eyes because now I know that she reads Agatha Christie. :)

  • he predicted the usefulness of the I readers

  • Were they sharing a twin bed?? 0_0

  • Vat19 has that "floating books" bookshelf thing"!

  • 3 volume complete Calvin and Hobbes?

...Just when I thought you couldn't get any more awesome...

  • I spy... Extended Edition LotR movies!!

    w00t!

  • You can buy the floating bookshelf at thinkgeek

  • Random book stacks are my main mode of storage. I have about four on my bedroom floor right now, separated by genre and/or author. It's all cool though. r

  • Stumbling on Happiness...in my pants

it's on his shelf so...just saying

  • Calvin and Hobbes, ftw! :D

  • I want some of those "floating book" holders. Anyone know where I can find them??

  • semi-famous? ppphhhh

  • oh that's a fail (imagine a giant arrow in the middle of the message)

  • well l is a genius because he goes to the library gets 50 different books at once l then reads them renewing them as required over the internet thus l obliterating any chance of book clutters cluttering my house l l \l/

  • The floating book stacks is a good idea.

  • Stumbling upon Happiness is a great book =D It is actually in my bedside stack as well

  • Ahah, the book problem too has assaulted me for years! I have four bookcases in my room alone that are filled to the brim and covered in books. Then they're all by my bedside, on my desk, my nightstand, my chair, any place with a surface. My room is also incredibly tiny. It's great :D

  • @kitkat12345678912343 Yush I think it looks awesome, seeing all the things you've read or are going to read. I love being reminded of their stories. It just sounded like your room is exactly my room! ZOMG xD

  • ohhh life before the kindle

  • We wish to inform you that tomorrow we will be killed with our families in your pants.

  • Is that a Chrestomanci book by Diana Wynne Jones on your dresser?! :D

  • Why do i love you guys so much, been watching your videos for ages only started going back from the start and i can't stop

  • I use the library the most since books take up a lot of place, as you say, but can also cost a lot. I want to be sure that I like a book or I'm going to like a book before I buy it, which you can't really know before you've bought it (except if it's a series and you liked the first book(s)).

Furthermore, if it's not Harry Potter there will only be a slight chance I'm going to read it again.

  • I can't read on the internet because I feel like I will throw-up. But the books online don;t compare to the real book in your hands.

  • Ok I am completly agenst e-books only because reading is my only favorite non-computer activity. I like librarys (magical places of wonder and awsomeness.. in your pants XD) but I LOVE used booke stores, sure borders is my god, but used book stores like book barn are not only cheaper but also they fell more, i dont know, magical. Also if you only read a book once and you wanna impress someone the spine is already warn so you can say 'I've read this old thing HUNDREDS of times'

  • where can i get some floating book shelves?

  • did hank inspire the eBook??????????????????

  • my brother who is both nerd and jock (but mostly jock) most of his books r star trek so its ok!

  • I love those floating book shelves, they're so cool!

  • I know I'm super late on this, but I thought I'd comment on the used bookstore topic. You invited other authors to comment and, well, that's-a me! I am just a budding author, so I do not mind my books being circulated through used book stores like The Book Exchange (which, btw, looks AWESOME)--as far as I'm concerned, seeing my books in ANY retail is still super exciting. When I get to be John's Printz-award nominated status, though, I'm sure this feeling just might change. Keep being awesome!

  • Hey! I've got that Calvin and Hobbes set! ^^

  • Comment removed

  • I saw the shelf on Vat19 xD

  • the answer? amazon kindle.

  • Where do you get those magic floating book holders?

  • I need some of those amazing floaty-book holders O_O

  • hence the ipad

  • Peace is Every Step in Your Pants

Stumbling on Happiness in Your Pants

The Chalice and the Blade in Your Pants

  • CALVIN AND HOBBES!!!

  • 39 vid cmnt

  • Oh! I have the magic floating shelf things! I got them for xmas! haha.

  • I love books! And I just put "An abundance of Katherines" on hold at the library. ^-^ Can't wait for that! :D

  • omg i love Jonhathan Strange and Mr. Norrel! and my mom fixed that problem by getting me an AMAZON KINDLE!!! AHHHH! im in love :D

  • You have the complete Calvin & Hobbes!? Lucky!

  • I saw one o my favorite book, they read Johnathan Strange and Mr. norrel think thats right its been a while

  • He foreshadowed the flawed ereader evolution of today! Viva la revolution... but only to the point where we have a decent ereader. Because right now they are only half cool.

  • Hank, where can I find the floating bookshelves? I really want to get several. Because my room fails with only a single bookshelf.

  • My mother leaves books everywhere - we usually have at least three or four books in the bathroom, books on the stairs, books in the kitchen and the living room... My locker has at least two or three novels at any given time, and I usually carry around two or three with me wherever I go. :S

  • I know this feeling, when i first started buying books, i started out with a couple of books on a small self-standing shelf, then that got full so i got a bigger unit, then that got full so i got another big unit. Until now i have a custom hand made FULL SIZED WALL SHELFING UNIT that is now a perminate part of my room and has a good amount for free space on it for, you guess it, more books.

  • agatha cristie ftw!!! :D

  • I'm a writer who intends on becoming an author. I intend to live on writing, but that's not why I write. I write because I love to write, and I want to share what I've written. I love the Book Barn, a book exchange in ct It has books cats goats turtles and donuts which makes it awesome I want people to be able to read my work. Right now I have to wait until November to afford a book I want treading my future books to have to do. So I love libraries book exchanges and downloads They're awesome!

  • Ohmygosh. Where did he get the floaty book holder things? Must. Get. Some.

  • ZOMG COMPLETE VOLUMES OF CALVIN AND HOBBES I DIDN'T KNOW THERE WAS SUCH A THING I MUST GET THEM.

    Ahem.

Also, I wish to have a library when I get a house.

I also wish to have a lot more books than I do now. -sigh-

  • OMG HE'S DONATING TITHE!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I loike those books

  • i know that my aunt (who is an author), gets money from libraries when people borrow her book from the library. so that's pretty awesome i think.

  • how could you give back Tithe :o

    I loved that book!

yeah...I could never do that book exchange thing. I love my books too much.

I have two tubs under my bed, a shelf in my closet, a book shelf, and some in a cabinet above my closet. plus a HP shelf.

*gasp* Hank! how could you! I NEVER download books. because if people do that then ebooks will be the death of REAL books. just as itunes was for cd's :'(

I LOVE Books and I LOVE Cd's. not made of awesome Hank, NOT made of awesome.

  • Storing the books is a heck of a lot less difficult then moving the books is.Downloading books is nice, but I still prefer having the physical object.

  • librarys and book exchanges are awesome... i have also downloaded/ brought books also... wich is awesome cus they dont cost as much as the material object of a book

  • if i were an author, i think i'd be pretty proud that my book made it to a used book store in the first place, because i would feel that at least one person has read my book, gotten good use out of it, and wanted to give it to somebody else for a lower price. i mean i completely understand where you're coming from Hank, but at the same time, most authors write because they're truely dedicated to getting their stories noticed and published, instead of just for profit.

  • You said Book so many times that the word reminded me of a Russia General.

  • Wow! I want a Book Exchange! As far as I know, we don't have anything like that in England. We just have libraries. If any English nerdfighters know of a place like this, please let me know!

  • Haha, I was going to comment the same thing, well not the exact same thing. I was going to say that I own Tithe and have not read it yet.

I also wanted to know why Hank didn't say "in your pants" after he read the title of the book John recommended for him- its no fun when inside jokes become one sided.

I also wanted to ask where do books go when they die.

  • dude! u read Tithe! have u read the rest of the series?? i enjoyed it the experience of fantasy and profanity.

  • Hank was never punished for this video, was he? He was punished not long after for textually communicating in the Everyone Poops in My Pants video, but not for this. A video longer than 4 minutes IS a punishable offense and I vote for Hank being punished.

I mean, there havn't been that many lately anyway, and I wanna see one.

  • Ive written some books(2 this past year and 3 between the ages of 10 and 14) and even though i havent really made money off of them and im not trying to base a living on them(im hoping to start though) i feel that used book stores are great because this allows your work to be read by more people and although it may seem like your losing money initially i think that the more that read and the more its spread around, the more people will buy.

  • I have to know where you got those book hanger on the wall thingys...? I have so many books and my room can't fit anymore bookshelves. I just gotta know.

  • I was at that book exchange today! missoula :) I love it there.

  • I have a massive problem with TOO MANY BOOKS! Seriously, though, I don't think you can ever have too many books - just not enough space! When I buy a house, there will be a room that will be a personal library! I can never bear to let books go... never...

  • Man, I gotta visit this book exchange place for myself.

I can say though that I've never downloaded a book.

  • I have that sheet set!

Also what happens if your hard drive crashes and all of your books go *poof*? And what if your eyes get all messed up when you read on the computer?

    Another also: floating books!

Where do you get those shelvy things?

  • hank? or anyone? i know i'm really late hopping on the vlogbros bandwagon, but...

first off, you guys are the bestest.

and second: where'd you get those hanging bookshelf thingamajigs? they are simply the awesomest. (but... does the claspy thing mess up the book? even a little bit? i'm very book-protective..) i have the same book 'problem'... lotsabooks :D

and third... how do you find book exchanges? i haven't seen any.. [living in california...]

    can anyone help?

    and third...

  • oh my gosh! i totally want that silver dealie you have on the wall!!

  • a book shelf next to my bed, behind/under my head board, under the desk next to my bed, infront of my bed, inbetween my bed and the wall, in dresser drawers, in a giant cardboard box in my closet, in more cardboard boxes in the garage... so many books, hank!! D:

  • I keep my books strewn across my bedroom floor because I'm just that kool.

  • Hank, you know better than that! Books don't go in bookcases, or at the book exchange place! They go in my/your/his/her pants!

  • AAAHHHH "libeary". Hank should know it's "library".

The floating book deal makes up for it though.

  • i keep my book on my one small book shelf since i dont have many books or on my bed side table if i am going to or am reading them :) im posting a response to show this

  • I used to have the problem of having too many books, but then I bought a puppy and he he ate most of them. Weird thing was named him Potter and he ruined all of my Harry Potters books.

  • I keep books underneath my bed, on my nightstand, in my closet, in random bags and purses, in a fish tank-sized bookcase, and in a wall-sized bookcase. I might have to use the floating books idea though! I'm getting more books by the week!

  • I have the exact same issue: my books have sort of eaten my home, they're everywhere. Novels, magazines, comics, graphic novels, and the occasional Star Trek novel misplaced from my brothers room. But your video has given me an idea, I can give/ sell my books to used book stores and help them find new homes! Yay for property relocation! The only issue is parting with my books, I've taken a liking to them. Not-Yay for attachment to property which inflicts on finding new homes for my books.

  • I love how you guys own tons of books. <3

  • OMG I love the floating book idea!

  • Was that one of the Chronicles of Chrestomanci by Dianna Wynne Jones on the dresser?

  • That is such a good series.

  • I have the same problem at the moment, but since I'm living at home/student-highschool, I can't put up shelving like that in my room because of the holes it might possibly leave... I have a lot of heavy books >_>

My solution was cleavrly hidding piles through-out my room.

My copy of Looking for Alaska, (good point BTW bout authors gettin change) I got at a bookstore that was going out of business... FOR 3 BUCKS! YES HUGE SAVINGS!!!111!!!! But Kathrines and PT I checked out of my library

  • One of the things I learned with storing books (my advice to you, since i was just browsing comments and noticed yours) is to put them in the closet. I have over 1000 books in my room alone, and at this point there are seven book shelves, (and 10 boxes that can hold about 50-100 books each) Boxes are great because it keeps things neat and dry. put them on the closet floor and they stay out of the way.

Thats the advice I have for you about books! (most of mine are hardbacks ahah)

    hope it helps

  • Tnku! but most of mine are paperbacks, and I have that weird girl-complex about having 10 pairs of the same shoe. I treat them terribly and I'm not girly about wearing them, but I insist on keeping them organized. They take up a hell of a lot of space on their own! I'm right now storing them in stacks in my bros room, but I'm thinking about cleaning out some shelvage somewhere and stacking them up. If not, the library I work at library has an empty building I can 'borrow' to store stuff inside

  • ahh, i own the complete set of calvin and hobbes!

  • OMG I LOVE CALVIN AND HOBBES!!!!

  • I love Tithe. Such a good book. =)

  • What program are you using to record if it makes that sound when you record? I have never had that issue when using iMovie while I record.

  • Yikes... I don't know why you would want to trade your books in! Sure they take up tons of space, but there's nothing like reading a book and then adding it to your shelves!

Speaking of, I need more shelf space.

  • Get those Trek books out in the light!

  • is that sophie's world i saw? haha. ap european history memories.

  • JOHNATHAN STRANGE.

Words cannot express my utter loathing of that book. Worst fracking christmas present I ever got. It's still sitting in my basement...somewhere.

Oh yes, and Star Trek? Amazing. I love you moar nao.
