I have just learned something disturbing. US lawmakers are currently attempting to force people on welfare, unemployment and other public benefits to undergo drug screening. It passed in florida but was overturned and is now on hold for further review.

I ate 2 "everything" bagels, which contained poppyseeds. 1/2 hr later I took an in-house "DS-5 Rapid" test (similar to a litmus test). It was "not negative" for opiates. Our office does NOT call that "positive". It MUST be sent to lab for GC/MS confirmation, which measures thresholds extremely accurately.
Any testing facility that does NOT use lab confirmation of "non-negative" rapid tests is a crooked unethical racket.

The hospitals are REQUIRED by LAW to report to the police for certain matters, like for instance, if they have a gun shot victim, the hospitals must report that to the police, whether the victim wants it reported or not. They are also required to contact child services or the police if they suspect abuse of either the child or a spouse.

I have mixed feelings about CPS. They are there to protect children and help families in need. In certain circumstances I agree with taking the child away until a preliminarily investigation is conducted. If an immediate threat is not observed, but further investigation is warranted, then return the child and proceed.
It should be rare and only with a court order. If an immediate threat is observed then 24-48 hours of immediate loss is appropriate.

I was thinking of THC because smoke would cause oxygen restriction which could affect prenatal development and cause low birth weight. I live near the hospital, I know how bad of an area it is in concerns with drugs, so my thoughts of her actually failing from ONE bagel is that she's full of it. Okay, because some people seem to get things confused. The hospital tests the patients. Granted, the area the hospital is in is BAD for drugs, with lots of people coming in who are addicts and requesting specific drugs for minor things. For the mother testing positive, when the hospital gets a positive result, they pass the result to child services and then have ZERO INVOLVEMENT with the whole issue.

Just a note, if you fail a drug test for eating a poppy seed bagel (which is pretty much impossible in most situations, this one being an exception of course) you test positive for opiates not marijuana. If someone tests positive for opiates and they don't look like a street walker that's a red flag that you may have gotten a false positive or that your test is too sensitive and is worth a second look. Still, I'm amazed this hospital hasn't been sued.

I have mixed feelings about CPS. They are there to protect children and help families in need. In certain circumstances I agree with taking the child away until a preliminarily investigation is conducted. If an immediate threat is not observed, but further investigation is warranted, then return the child and proceed.
It should be rare and only with a court order. If an immediate threat is observed then 24-48 hours of immediate loss is appropriate.

A poppyseed bagel wouldn't make you test positive for weed. People starting leaning on that excuse so they raised the threshold for what actually constitutes a positive result. No she shouldn't have her baby taken away for weed(although the mothers I know STOP while they're pregnant), she tested positive because she smoked it...recently.

@ctraver I stand corrected. I looked it up because the story because it seemed like there was more to it than what was mentioned here. I was thinking of THC because smoke would cause oxygen restriction which could affect prenatal development and cause low birth weight. I was assuming SOMETHING triggered the test but when I looked it up the tests are automatic. But the threshold is usually higher to prevent false/positives so she definitely has a case against the hospital.

Actually the point TYT is missing is that the poppy seed bagel will make you test positive for opiates which is the indicator of heroin. There must be consent given and what they are doing is totally wrong. That said I do want child protective services to get involved with heavy duty drugs like heroin. They also need to make sure the person is also guilty, theres nothing wrong with asking questions but hell no to taking the baby on weak claims.

I live near the hospital, I know how bad of an area it is in concerns with drugs, so my thoughts of her actually failing from ONE bagel is that she's full of it. Either she ate a bunch of bagels or she was actually doing drugs. Am I the only one who remembers when Mythbusters tested the poppy seed bagel making you fail a drug test myth? Or the fact they found it takes more than one bagel to fail?

Okay, because some people seem to get things confused. The hospital tests the patients. Granted, the area the hospital is in is BAD for drugs, with lots of people coming in who are addicts and requesting specific drugs for minor things. For the mother testing positive, when the hospital gets a positive result, they pass the result to child services and then have ZERO INVOLVEMENT with the whole issue.

Just a note, if you fail a drug test for eating a poppy seed bagel (which is pretty much impossible in most situations, this one being an exception of course) you test positive for opiates not marijuana. If someone tests positive for opiates and they don't look like a street walker that's a red flag that you may have gotten a false positive or that your test is too sensitive and is worth a second look. Still, I'm amazed this hospital hasn't been sued.

If ingestion of poppy seeds could cause you to test positive, then you could test positive for the narcotic cocaine, because of older reserve notes, were used as coke pipe huffing. so if you held onto money, then rubbed your nose shortly before inhaling fiercely through the nose. something as simple as that, could test you positive for known narcotics.

can't smoke pot while pregnaunt? but recent studies (as in more recent than those brain damage ones) is showing that children who's parents smoke while the child was young are more social, have better mental faculities by up to 20% more than parents who don't. Done on about 800 parents per group. Oh my, the most healthy seed, that grows into a plant to be used for millions of purposes, including medical, might not be bad? who would have thought.

i'm a doctor and please let me assure you that women who test positive for the vast majority of drugs will NOT have their babies taken away. if they test positive for opiates or crack cocaine, then yes, the baby can be taken away, but NOT for weed or alcohol or tobacco or really anything else
