Wood changes the character completly. End of story....
As well as if you don´t play your guitar it will not sound as good, as time goes by. Maybe one of the reasons that some vintage instruments don´t sound as good as others.. Kept in the closet --> makes a sad guitar, you know :)
If you dont care about wood. Fine. By cheap china guitars and put expensive pup´s in it, and rock!! It´s all your choice...
You guys really sucked me into this one. Great conversion! My experience shapes me views and opinions on tone. I have absolutely noticed all my guitars change with time. I hear the difference not only in age but the kind of wood each is made of. My mahogany bodies all have a chalky, gutty sound both plugged in and not plugged in. My ash body guitars sound tight and gritty. Alder seems a bit warmer, more "color". Age seems to get drier with more sustain. I hear nuances between every one.
I'm in the position of choosing a 50th anniversary 1960 Standard Les Paul vs. a 1959 VOS Standard Les Paul. Which one would you guys choose, and why?
people always are quick to throw the "old wood" phrase out and when in reality its only a factor as of today.
as when the guys who made them famous (Richards/Clapton/Bloomfield/Green/Page) acquired there's in the early to late 60's practically making the model brand new and eliminating the "old wood" factor.
@bes628 yes BUT the old guitars were also made mainly out of old growth wood. It's not that the wood has aged as much as the difference between the cell structure/grain of the old growth vs. non-old growth. There is also the issue of the hide glue, brazillian fretboards. My opinion obviously. I own a 57 and a 57 VOS and there is no comparison even with the same electronics.
@sheptone you are probably spot on, as you own both version to make that comparison. But I think between this video and the re-issue, the main difference to my ears is the upper mids are lacking with the re-issue.
@sheptone I'm not a believer in the hideglue/brazilian/old growth argument. Give your VOS 40 years to age, and I bet it will sound pretty close to the real thing. I believe the chalky sound of a vintage guitar comes from the dry wood. But, there are many who believe the wood of a guitar has absolutely no effect on tone at all.
@murfdog19 the stupidest statement I have read about guitars!! as a guitar builder myself I can tell u 100 percent the wood has EVERYTHING to do with how a guitar sounds!!! pickups electronics etc. are important but wood is KING!!
@STORYTASTIC Wood is king on noob guitar forums. They also believe that '59 Les Pauls contain magical fairy dust!! The wood is very important in acoustic guitars, not for electric. I played a Strat made out of metal that still sounded like a Strat. If you are an actual player, than you know that the tone of an electric guitar comes from the electronics, guitar shape and scale length. Real builders don't buy into all of the other hype.
@murfdog19 well my friend I appreciate your passion but you are sooo wrong wood is everything in electric instruments..I build so I know I am a 40 year player builder and pro ...wood is extremely important...sorry you are very much mistaken
@STORYTASTIC Give me a Les Paul made out of oak, or a Strat made out of mahogany, and I'll make them sound like a Les Paul and Strat.....no matter what wood is used to build them.
@murfdog19 of course you can but thats not what we are talking about...my friend ...listen...I have swapped vintage pickups and electronics in newer instruments..and it soundds nothing like the older better wood select instrument
@Guruguitartech No, I'm just a real player. Everyone else can buy into the "mojo" of slow growth wood, hide glue and what not. Just give me a run of the mill USA Les Paul and I'll make the people stand on their chairs. I don't care if it's made of plywood.
the difference is more in the pickups (the older they are the less output they have) than is the wood in my opinion. Althought the real 59' is a incredible peace of collecion. Anyway, 80% of the tone is in the hands and the way you think about it. Give Jimmy Page a R9 or R8 and you will see... ^^
Und was sagst -Geschäft! Oder?
Ja ich weiß schon bei dem geilen Deal bist Du baff :-)
i wish they would take a 59 and make a aged r9 like the others just that looks the same as the real 59 and let someone play it and say which is better and sounds or plays better>
this is Udo Pipper. "Betts Toler" was the name of that cherry '58 that Pipper was playing in some of his other videos that used to belong to Dickue Betts and then Dan Toler.
That stereo effect lends a fuller sound for this one, but this guitar definitely has a creamier low end. Slight difference for the mids and highs, but not night and day.
It's pretty obvious, yeah. I know several people who have played Bursts and even someone whose father owns one and has a collection of over 100 LPs. The consensus amongs those I trust is that the difference isn't as large as one would imagine, and they they are very inconsistent from guitar to guitar.
But yeah. This video is stereo. The other is mono. Lame.
Wood changes the character completly. End of story....

The R9 is AMAZING.
THe 59 is HEAVEN.
If God ever built a guitar it was a 59 Les Paul.
Pups, Wood, magic - its like a Ferrari - you may not like it (I do) but when you hear one, your head turns. Its unique.
The 59 Les Paul redefines perfection.

Anyone noticed how the real '59 has been recorded with some kind of pseudo - stereo effect and the R9 is straight mono ?

The difference is clear. You can also see which guitar inspires him more. The Historic sounds like a it's covered in a blanket compared to the 59.
