  • What did u use to heat it

  • I have done it with Acer Aspire 5520 and it worked fine.

Thanks a lot. It saved me £100.

  • @tommypolack So it was already worth making this video. Thanks for feedback!

  • before i tear a laptop to pieces, 1. will this fix the 6 screen display problem and 2. is this similar to reheating an xbox gpu with a heatgun?

  • @debs222 i had the 6 screen problem, it fixed it. on the beginning of video you can see it. The xbox360 often has the same problem.

  • @kadamka oh yeah didnt notice it at first. Anyhow i managed to fix mine without opening up.

  • @debs222 it can be. for example if you cover the notebook with towels, and turn it on, the gpu makes enough heat, to "reflow itself". It works on the same principe, but it can cause damage, and it won't last long! if problem occors again, just open it, and give some heat.

  • @kadamka No no , i mean through messing with settings, turns out the onboard chip was fried which was causing the screens so i just disabled and renabled the 8400m card and got the newest drivers.

  • Hey i have the same motherboard, could the gpu cause no lights on my laptop. Only the power light on the side lights up....thanks

  • @fixitorbreakit i don't think it's the same issue. if it's only the gpu, it should switch on (lights, hdd, fan). no idea

  • I have a replacement MB on which the GPU hasn't malfunctioned yet. I was going to apply the thermal paste/copper shim anyhow. How long do you think this will prolong the defect? Is there a chance it may not occur at all if I keep it cool and clean?

  • @davisstjames i think it's absolutely good idea to install the plate, but i don't know how long it will prevent. One more thing, you all have to be aware: never take the notebook out, to cold air, when it's hot, or open the window next to it, to avoid radical thermal expansion, and the cracking of the soldering.

  • Hi

    Concratulations, wonderful, marvellous!

I am a brazilian computer repair technician.

    See you

    Rom.

  • Hi. did you put thermal paste between the gpu and the copper plate? Thanks

  • @mikelcerveaux yes, on both sides of the plate

  • how about don't buy hp. horsepoop. the only hp i have is a netbook and that's the way it'll stay. toshiba and acer are far better.

  • @refluX1k post the video about time travelling, and then i can use your advice :) anyway of course i won't buy hp again, but until i have to use this one, it's still better with display, than without

  • @refluX1k Its not HP at fault, its nVidia. Or really, its whoever invented BGA chips are at fault, this is also happening in toshibas and acers, but you hear about it mostly in HP's because they were 90% of the retail PC market at the time the DVxxx series came out.

  • i had a DV7-1130us that i had to oven bake. it got the 1 num/caps lock code. i took it apart and baked it 450 dgrees for 5 minutes, back together, and BAM. works great. never had an issue after that. Oven bake is a better method, and its free.

  • @c0rrupts3ct0r555

Hey ! I am having same issues.. I was wondering did you wrap the board in anything or you just put it in the oven ..? Thanks!

  • @dadekusa no i stuck it on a cookie sheet, at 450 degrees for 5 minutes.. took it out, let it cool, stuck it back in my HP DV7 and it worked perfectly i used it for a month, then sold it. :)

  • @c0rrupts3ct0r555 I have the same problem with 1245dx. U baked the whole board?

  • @rossdaboss1959 yep. that was my model as well. ATI turion X2 with 3200 HD? just do what i did, preheat first, then cook it for 5 minutes at 450, reassemble and see what happens.

  • @c0rrupts3ct0r555 Thanks!

  • @c0rrupts3ct0r555 One other thing. Do u bake it with the processor still on it?

  • how long does it work for?

  • @paginipro it's different, it can be 1-2 months, but if you do the heat up phase twice, it can be half a year. Last time i added a small copper plate between the gpu and the heat sink, and it's working since december, (9 months) it seems to work longer on every computers i have done.

  • thanks this video was very helpful

  • Thanks a lot man, i followed the instructions and now my lap top is ok

  • thank you so much for the video,

i really needed those instructions for disassembling it

    so far 11/13 notebooks worked

  • @apostolisss Could you tell me how exactly are you heating yours up? I have a solder gun but i am afraid it may not be powerful enough. Any tips?

  • @Thelosttraveller1 you need a heat gun not a solder gun

  • So, I'm hoping to do this tomorrow. Just a couple questions- So, I have available to me a soldering gun and also a blowtorch. Which would work better? Also, before you reflowed the GPU, you were cleaning it? Did you use anything special to do that, besides a wet paper towel, and is this step important? And what was the little thing you put thermal paste on? Thanks for the help!

  • @sasuke61694 don't do it with the torch, i think open flame can cause damage, i always use heater gun (which you can see).

Clean the chips from dried thermal paste, you can do it with some alcohol and a bit paper, i don't know how important is it, but i think it can give out more heat with clean surfaces. After i put the thermal paste, i just smoothed the paste on the chip.

Put a small copper or alu plate on it as well, about 15mmx15mm, it will last much longer (between gpu and heat sink)

  • I ve done it today just with a lighter and some thermodinamic paste. It works, thanks god. but I don t know for how long... is this only some temporary solution?

  • @chess012345 next time don't use flame to heat the chip, as i know it can spoil it. For some of us it was temporary, or quite long lasting solution, to heat it twice, and put some copper plate between sink and chip.

The most professional method is, to reball the chip, (BGA), but it's quite expensive, and it needs some special equipment.

  • I've had 100% success rate when I take a piece of aluminum foil, and electrical tape and make a shim on the gpu with some arctic silver. I did this to 2 laptops and they are going on 2 years with no problems

  • @MrJohnFoSho yes right. I put a copper plate about 20x20x0,5mm between chip and sink... it seems to be good after half a year

  • Wonder why we dont see it working at the end of the video ???

  • @nichevl watch at 4:38, it's working

  • Oeps forgot a screw lols here we go again hahahaha, just kidding, nice video

  • you are great man

  • Thanks a ton!!

  • this song scared the shit out of me :D

  • @vbnegativeR the first*:D

  • I 'm sorry but I know it does not work. I'm selling these board for DV2000/DV6000/DV9000 for years and this is just temporary fix, system will work from 1-2 days to 1 month max and then fail again. The only way to get problem resolved is BGA chip replacement in work station or motherboard replacement where chip was already replaced. Good luck to everyone who try to use this method. Thank you.

  • @AllianceServiceInc

i wrote, it isn't permanent, but on my friend's laptop i've done it only once, and now it's running since september (about 5 months). on mine it was 3rd time, for last time i've done it twice, and it's working now since december (2 months)...

  • @kr3cho buy the cheapest and do it!

the most important is to do it from about 5 cm, about 40 sec in circles, and a little bit up and down.

AND when you finished let it cool down for few minutes, then do it again. Last time 2 months ago i've done it 2x and it seems to last longer.

    Good luck!

  • @kadamka

hi, I bought the head gun, working 2 times as you told me, but don't work ,,, ouch

but now the blue leds, don't work, the pc don't start ..... maybe the battery is finnish...

Now I have other problem, reload the battery, I don't know why but maybe I must need to connect everything and try to reload,,,,,,, I want to die joaojajoa

with the normal cable I can't start the pc..... I don't know

  • @kadamka

Hi, I do it!!! but don't work.......

1º time few hot, I checked, nothing

2º time with maximun hot, I checked nothin

now I have the blue leds,,,, no screen, no hard disk activitie.... mmm, I connected everything

when I switch on the pc, just blue leds, and black screen, 2days ago I had 6 small screens, but now, just black background ;(

I think, a new motherboard, can be the only solution.....

  • @kr3cho noooooooooooo dont do it with flame!

it can be very desctructive to the microchips arhitectures!!!!

i saw that video too, but i think it's crazy!

I used a bosch phg 1600 watts, but i only used on half power, so the cheapest one what you can find in a store will do it.

or really use the halogen light method, but i don't advise to use open fire!

  • hi,

I have everything ready, my desktop is full of staff jajaja so in the last step, I'm using my Hair dryer because I haven't money for a proffesional heat gun...

How many time I need with a normal hair dryer, I was trying 2 3 4 times, 30seconds aprox, push the nvidia chip,,, mmm doesn't work...

    thanks for your support ;)

  • @kr3cho hi

i guess it won't work with the hair dryer, i don't think it can heat up to 200-210˙C

if it could, it would melt in your hand...

you don't need any professional stuff, a cheap one from china can do it as well, i think you can buy it for about 15 euros.

AND don't push the chip hard, it can slide a bit, and then it's game over.

if you sure, you can't buy a heat gun, you can try a 100w halogen light bulb, from about 3-5 cms for 1,5 minutes. i haven't try it, i just saw it in another vid.

  • Hey friend, nice video!! It's a great trick to fix this lame issue.

Let me ask you, I'm with my gf dv6500 here it won't boot. I would try other hard drives but the stupid hp have some kind of one of the kind notebook hard drive connector.. (sighs).. well it takes a lot of time in bios "videos bios shadowed" and it don't see my hard drive to boot it up. What do you think could fix that ?

  • @veggav it's just an adapter you can pull it out (google for hp sata hdd connector). You can try to fix the drive in another computer, or in a rack, but in worst case you will have to change it.

  • @kadamka

Hey, I've found out that some minutes ago. I've tried another hard drive with windows 7 and got "operational system not found". So it's not the hard drive. The bios settings is on first boot device "notebook hard drive" and it won't boot. Do you have any idea of a solution ?

  • @veggav did you make a new installation of win7? or you just used a hdd with existing windows?

  • @kadamka

I've used an old hard drive from another notebook.

The strange part is, the hard drive original to the dv6500 boots from usb. So it is a problem in the bios checking the hd. I thought maybe I could update the bios, but there is nothing in the bios to do that. No AZ Flash like a Asus motherboard :(

Did you ever saw this problem before ?

  • @veggav no... never, so as i understand your bios can't see the hdd, not even the windows installer cd...

    i would try cmos reset...

  • @kadamka

How can I do that ?

  • @veggav take out the battery, disconnect the Ac adapter, and take out the small battery from the mainboard socket for few minutes...

im not sure it will help, but it worth a try

  • Fine

  • I dont get it ! What did you use to "burn" ?! And how you know its

  • @iben092 i used a bosch heat gun.

you can see at 4:40 i checked it with the screen.

i've done it about 40-50 sec, moving the heat gun up and down, and in circles. maybe it will last longer if you do it once more after it slowly cooled down.

  • nice work, sadly it's got to be done over and over again in few weeks.

  • @reply4reply

yes i know, but it's strange, on some notebooks it last for weeks, on others for months...

  • @kadamka you need to reach liquid state (235c) to last for few months with a bit of flux, I replace the entire solder and lasts for years.

  • @reply4reply yes, but it can't be done with a heat gun and without any skill :)

  • I defenetly think that this is way better than the oven, candle or gas lighter method. I going to do it in the next days!

  • @puromar good luck, and i wait your feedback of the result
