@MrKeepitunderyourhat wow a film critic, in my experience of film critics they only like obscure, arty shit that no one except film critics like. But hey as he is a film critic he must be god of movies, his opinion is law... yada, yada, yada. Fool.
@l4dyvenge4nce I didn't say his opinion is law, I disagree with him about many things, but saying he 'doesn't get it' is a stupid argument. It's such a pathetic cop out. And there is a certain irony in you accusing critics of only liking obscure, arty shit in defense of a film that is obscure, arty shit. When he's on form, Van Sant is a great director, and we get films like Elephant and Drugstore Cowboy. When he isn't, we get crap like Last Days and Restless.
im sorry i liked the movie, people need to understand to research more about kurt, yes he was a happy guy and hard working, but his last days were im sure just like that, i do see flaws with the movie tho, like the camera getting stuck on the tree, i was like wtf when that happened, kurts last days were the end of his time, he was burnt out he was a dead man walking, it should of shown flashbacks to balance with the movie i think to make it better, u never see his happy side is one flaw
if you want to watch a film simply to watch shit happen, you might as well watch Twilight or Scary Movie. if you want to see a film with substance and exploration, watch Van Sant's films, or any other decent art house director.
I'm the biggest Kurt Cobain fan and Last Days sucks. Michael Pitt is a good actor, and equally Gus Van Sant is a good director....they just didn't understand what to do with Kurt's story.
I thought the same thing when I first watched it, but after rewatching (something I thought I'd never do) I kind of saw the appeal. Totally different from any other film, and Gus Van Sant is no doubt a pretentious tit, but it's quite easy and hypnotic to watch if you're in the right mood.
What annoys me the most about it is the marketing angle of making it look like a Kurt Cobain biopic - that's pretty unforgivable.
This was part 2 of Gus Van Sant's Tumbleweed Trilogy, where hollow windswept echoy crap plays out for an hour an a half. Witless cinema that's excruciating to watch.
i love this film. i can't defend liking it, i can understand why so many of my friends dislike it, but for some strange reason i still enjoy this film.
obviously this man has completely and utterly missed the point. he isnt called blake because of legal reasons at all. its because its not about kurt cobain. its all about isolation. this guy should stick to bollocks like twilight and other mainstream crappy cinema. no intellect at all.
@alexthemod1- It is about Kurt, come on, a blonde haired heroin junkie rock-star of the early 90's who shoots himself? Hmm I wonder who that is. It's clearly about Kurt, but Courtney didn't approve of the script so they changed people's names.
@piemakesmelol but they are where the similarities finish. its using one character to illustrate many different things. anyone watching last days for a story of kurt cobain will be throughly dissapointed. it is a film that uses cobain's last days to explore concepts of loneliness, isolation, suicide etc. etc. and this courtney love thing isnt true. van sant said himself he couldnt do cobains last days justice, so persued the aforementioned idea instead.
@raskolnikov456- But there is more to than just that, Kurt did go out into the town in underground clubs like Blake does, and then there's the PRivate Investigator and best friend looking for Blake, the same thing happened to Kurt.
I've always found it to be amazing. It's better than Gerry, worse than elephant and those are the only two films it should ever be compared to. I love Kermode, his review of Revolver has always made me laugh, he's usually spot on. But I think his strength lies in looking at Hollywood blockbusters and being able to deconstruct them. He gave a good Dark Knight review because he reviews Big movies as if they were art films. Unfortunately, he doesn't treat art films like art films.
@ithacadan3 I think he just reviews films. He wants to like everything he goes in to watch, regardless if they are blockbusters or small films. He reads my mind on movies so often. If a film works and 'gives', he likes it, art movie or big Hollywood movie. Besides, I don't think a bad film should be let off the hook just because it cheaply made.
Last Days didn't really impress me, lots of dead space in it, plus Mark is completely right about the tree part, WTF was that? lol
However, I think Elephant is brilliant.
Gerry was tolerable because the atmosphere and locations are mesmerizing
but it dragged on beyond belief. He also does an amazing job when he's handed just the position of director, but has no hand in the writing process (i.e. Good Will Hunting and Milk)
Christ, I'm surprised this film is getting such a pasting. I loved it and found that the fact that nothing much happened was good. I was in quite a depressed state of mind when I first saw it so maybe a rewatch will make me change my mind...
haha funny as hell. I just watched drugstore cowboy and thought that was pretty weak, everyone goes on about gus van sant but has he made any good films? the ony other one I have seen is his psycho remake and the less said about that the better.
this film is the bar I use to describe how bad something is.
A guy I used to know leant me the Last Days DVD and he had a twinkle in his eye. I had to take 3 'rage-breaks' when I watched it. Everything about it was absolute unadulterated shite! photography, acting, the velvet underground sing-a-long bit everything everything everything was utterly shit shit shit shit.
Kermode, you did well to review it without swearing and thank you TulseLuper for posting it.
micheal pitt: worst actor ever

this film is rather good in terms of fitting to Kurt Cobain - arrogant, 1 dimensional, and mistakes itself for a higher importance

I love how Kermode tries to think of the greatest films of all time and all he can come with is 'Citizen Kane, The Exorcist and Mary Poppins'.
