Great instructions. Thanks for the video. I'm looking forward to diving over tables and things for no reason, hahah! =D
One question, though: I just started judo about a month ago, and the forward rolls there look basically the same, except most of the better people don't put their hands down, where here, you are. Could you explain the difference/reasoning behind this? Both rolls seem very graceful, dissipating the impact well, but the technique is slightly different...

@recurveninja I am immensely impressed. Especially after seeing his student(?) exercise this technique at just how silent and fluid Rick is. Great tutoiral at how to properly do this technique.
If your shoulder (the front portion) goes straight into the ground, it can "break" your shoulder or your collarbone. Just be sure to practice your roll until you've got it perfect before doing the dive roll.
Its called blocking. Its a technique that gymnasts use to convert forward momentum into upward momentum. If you watch the run up to the jump over you can see an initial forward jump where in he lands on the balls of his feet, then pushes up into the actual upward jump. The same technique is used in parkour to convert downward momentum into forward momentum. ^_^ I hope this helped.
a... actually i can do the dive roll but i wanna learn jus how can u dive roll over a person? how did he jump dat high? btw my normal dive roll is perfect actually jus wanna knw how can i do it really high...
^_^' actually, even I can do it that high, and I'm 220lbs. Its only about 4ft up since the guy he's jumping over is in a kiba dachi (Horse Riding Stance) Like I said in my first comment its all about blocking to get added upward momentum to allow you to get over the object, in this case a person. If you watch "Team Ukemi"s "Roll Tutorial" you can watch one of them jump about 6ft up into a roll.
Nope. I do dive rolls on cement floors all the time. The first time its kinda scary, but if you have enough arm strength then you have nothing to be worried about.
Actually, the shoulder blade is a very strong bone, and really won't be taking a lot of impact if you use your arms right. Since you actually practice a partial art I assume your triceps are fairly well developed so you have nothing to worry about. As to what Bujikan, I don't practice that, or any, art. I'm just a martial arts enthusiast, that is a light practitioner of parkour. ^_^ Again, don't worry about your shoulder, just put your arms out and use them to absorb the shock.
I'm an idiot, don't copy me. I learned from Youtube and personal experience. Either way, I don't see how you break your shoulder considering that its your arms that absorb the shock... Unless he dove straight into the ground shoulder first that shouldn't happen.
About a year ago. Just started getting into free running recently. I tried something earlier today. It was a long dive roll. No mini trampoline or anything. I dive rolled OVER a mat, clearing it. About 3m (9ft). It was priceless seeing my friends faces when I did it xD
Rick is very physically talented. He has very good rolls and is good at explaining them. However if you try to copy the over the head dive roll that he does you are asking for a knee in the face. This is very dangerous (buts looks good). Have the student stand sideways and tuck his head for safety.
nice rolls. very well executed. Properly explained. =) so far this is the most accuate instructions given by this guy. Its not defense or offense. Just practical body movements.
"This is a very practical thing to use if some one has a Bo-staff and is going to strike you can dive right over it."
(What? are the shaolin monks of L.A. running a muck?)
ninjitsu isnt a style of fighting ninjas try to fight the least amount as possible so if your trying to get away from someone like most ninjas would this would be very useful
i think its more about avoiding fights to begin with than running away. if someone wanted to fight me and he wasnt mike tyson or something id probably pin him down until he calms down or something
its more of an evasion than a fighting technique. if your surrounded then jumping or diving past/over one of your attackers is an advantage because you then have them all in front of you instead of being surrounded.
I didn't know this before. Thank you so much for teaching this great break fall technique. This is a very practical thing to use if some one has a Bo-staff and is going to strike you can dive right over it. and away from them. I can't believe you were able to jump over your partner. Thanks sensai Tew!!

why, in the name of God, would you do this?
but seriously, the forward roll portion of this is quite handy, especially if you are practicing getting thrown.
But the run, hop, dive part is mostly for the birds.
You cant learn to be a martial artist from youtube or a dvd. instruction with zero feedback/criticism is dangerous. in more ways than one.
