The reason they implant so many embryos is because, from what I understand, they only have a 20% chance of implanting in the woman's endometrius. Therefore, it would be most logical to implant 5 (5 x 20 = 100%). But I agree, 8 is far too many. However, 1 or 2 is too little based on the statistical chance of the embryo's survival.
i think that she needs to but the ones who do not have disablities should be put up for adotion and that the ones who have disabilities she neeed to put in friends care until she has enough money and resources to support them

I think your ideas are logical. Not jumping to conclusions, but keeping an eye out for the wellbeing of those children, is overall a good plan. And I can see why she had all the embryos implanted. From what I heard (because I can't go on much else) she wasn't willing to destroy any of the created embryos, and didn't expect all of them to "take". Im sure you know this but the reason why so many embryos are often implanted into the womb is because the survival rate is so low AND the cost of IV is so high.
IV can cost around $75 000 for just one "go" maybe 6-8 embryos (like the Octomom case"). If only 2-3 embryos were implanted and none survived that would be $75 000 spent and failure to conceive.
You're right. She should be monitored but it just is NOT appropriate to consider taking the children before she has the chance. We really can't judge her having not walked in her shoes.
It's her own fault if she can't take care of her kids, not the children's fault. First off, she's unemployed living off of her kid's disability checks. I see Dan's point to this story but I belive we need to better understand Octomoms situation. For example all the other times she got pregnant they put 6 embrios in her and the result was 1 or 2, she had no idea that not only would they all make it but that some of them would split. Also as a christian she did not want to use selectiveredution as I and many other christians view it as murdering. So although her decisions may seem terrible we still need to keep a open mind and help these kids!

While her decision to go through infertility again wasn't the wisest, we can't assume that she has or hasn't tried her best to make good decisions following her surprise of having conceived so many babies. Also, it's not the babies' fault and it is a miracle they have all survived. While this situation definitely isn't ideal or recommendable, this doesn't deserve the extent of negative and hostile attention it has received.

Why is everyone taking this out on the doctor? It's standard procedure to insert multiple embryos to ensure the best chance of actual birth. The fact that 8 of them survived is just pure luck. Most people who have IVF have about 4 - 12 embryos implanted at once and 'Octomom' is no different.

Im sure you know this but the reason why so many embryos are often implanted into the womb is because the survival rate is so low AND the cost of IV is so high.
IV can cost around $75 000 for just one "go" maybe 6-8 embryos (like the Octomom case"). If only 2-3 embryos were implanted and none survived that would be $75 000 spent and failure to conceive.

It's her own fault if she can't take care of her kids, not the children's fault. First off, she's unemployed living off of her kid's disability checks. So, why not have 8 more kids and make more money off of them? Plus she just wants to be famous and have a TV show after her. She is going to get them taken of. She is selfish, has no interest in her children's welfare, and is a sick woman. Don't have children if you can't take care of them! One is hard enough. I totally agree with Dan.

I see Dan's point to this story but I belive we need to better understand Octomoms situation. For example all the other times she got pregnant they put 6 embrios in her and the result was 1 or 2, she had no idea that not only would they all make it but that some of them would split. Also as a christian she did not want to use selectiveredution as I and many other christians view it as murdering. So although her decisions may seem terrible we still need to keep a open mind and help these kids!

I agree, reemleigh2009. While her decision to go through infertility again wasn't the wisest, we can't assume that she has or hasn't tried her best to make good decisions following her surprise of having conceived so many babies. Also, it's not the babies' fault and it is a miracle they have all survived. While this situation definitely isn't ideal or recommendable, this doesn't deserve the extent of negative and hostile attention it has received.

I do not think that this mother should have been allowed to have that many children. I do'nt t belevie that she has enought money to care for all those children. Then the living conditions of that home are un suitable. Then she will not take any help from anyone she is not living in the real word. If she would ask for help ffix the house and have finacle support then she would be able to care for those children.

They'd have to change the laws. Although the doctor was completely unethical to the pt of negligence. The real problem is with the law presidence- Roe vs Wade ... woman's right to choose. That's why your seeing alot of these. With fitting laws to allow for multiple multiple births even if they are to unfit mothers like Nadya they are producing welfare babies. I believe there should be laws to prevent people from purposely overpopulating beyond their means. I mean, it's one thing to keep an unplanned pregnancy, but if one is unavailable to financially raise their children in a stable environment, why should they be investing time and money on invetro fertilization?
The same guidelines that are applied in regards to adoption should be applied to invetro fertilization as well.

Up until this last week, I too was on the fence on whether she was crazy or not. Then she turned down about 1.3 million dollars in hopes to be picked up on a reality tv show...... Why is everyone taking this out on the doctor? It's standard procedure to insert multiple embryos to ensure the best chance of actual birth. The fact that 8 of them survived is just pure luck. Most people who have IVF have about 4 - 12 embryos implanted at once and 'Octomom' is no different.

I agree with Dan, octomom is putting pressure on herself and even letting her health suffer, how can you be a good mum with 8 kids to look after with no husband, no job, no money? some mum's struggle with just 1 even when they do have income and a husband. the world is overpopulating as it is plus why have so many kids when not prepared for them?.congrats on octomum if she can cope and best of luck to octuplets.

In the future, I think maybe we should make a law that there is a maximum of 3 embryos. For the safety of the mom AND more importantly, the children.

Sure, I wouldn't want my wife and I to do it (in fact, I'd refuse), and I question the wisdom of in vitro fertilization being available to everyone (or at all - different topic), but the fact is, it was available, and she, as a free American, decided to go for it. If the state feels that she's an unfit mother, then put the kids into homes that will be able to love them, but you can't control her reproductive freedoms!

all i know is that When i heard it was a woman from california, i was thinking "please not a mexican please not a mexican".
