in saying that though a drummer SHOULD be economical with their playing were applicable. I mean I watch guys like Travis Barker, and it looks really impressive, but the way he sets up his cymbals and how he attacks them, I bet he goes through a lot of them. and its really uneccesary, just seems like he chokes all the tone from his crashes doing that anyway. and it doesn't make him look anymore punk or rock n roll to anybody actually thinking. So yeah being economical is very important
I understand what jojo is saying and for the most part I agree, but their is no right or wrong dynamics in playing, like the open hi hat stuff. in a punk band or thrash or any hi octane rock riff that heavy hat style sounds good, remember as a musician you are setting the vibe and that heavy hi hat stuff can bring some edgy rough and raw charm to a thrash or punk riff, not so much if you just played it lighter. now for blues, or jazz you'd want to play it lighter. love jojo though killer player
This was 20 years ago too....Jojo is way more mature and seasoned now too. This video here came from the days when Weckl said "watch out for Jojo, hes a phenom"
@PositivelyBored ....right. I remember Dave Weckl sayin' in an 80ies' interview that he was listening a lot to a group called "Screamin' Headless Torsos" - and simply was amazed by the drummer - who was Jojo at the time.
while i do agree with what hes saying, no drummer "has to be" anything. People told Van gogh the very same thing. Music is art. Now, its one thing if your not dynamic because you cant be as oppose to your not dynamic because you choose not to be. To be or not to be!
@ariesram74 perhaps in a street fight, but art isnt about beating someone. Music is not a sport. It really dumbs down music when so many comments are like this. It leaves me with a notion that most people who claim to be "musicians" dont really see what its about in the first place. Having chops, speed and music theory are a small portion of the pie. Appreciation is the biggest. If you can appreciate all, then you can grow beyond belief.
@DavidChoiDrumz That is a great question. I have no idea. Probably just working with rudiments, and making hybrids and pre meditated phrases. That is what I do. But i'm not 1/20th of this guy lol. I think he is just really really good hahaha : )
He has amazing phrasing. Such a key component of any musician! Interesting master class covering subjects not generally covered. A masterclass indeed!
why thumbs me down, i am not even speaking nonsense. usually good drummers or drummers that are perceived to be good usually are hard hitters. nothing wrong with that
to me this is an amazing vid cause he talks very valid stuff for EVERY drummer out there and it's no dumb chatting around. he talks and gives an example right after that. he does good examples of how to do it right AND how to do it wrong.
so to the people below me: fuck you :D this is without a doubt a different way of teaching but i thing it's good!
i understand hittng too hard loses the nice sound however in metal drumming the harder you hit the better it is. u hit soft, pple say u hit pussy la.. hit like girl
yeah i see what ya saying - BUT you will be a better player when you use your cymbals in all different ways than just slamming it. I see plenty of metal drummers that dont smack them hard at all. also depends what cymbals you have. hi-hats are another story... lol
I know (because am playin) a lot drum parts where drums need to stay one level in dynamics. He is right saying its hard and needs energy. Death metal is that. Public feels it. See Jordison solos. Hearing Mayer plays I feel real chill out. everyone should find his way.
lol that just helped me a lot.. i love this guy he has so many tips and that is why im going to a clinic may 11th. i can't wait hearing this stuff from a pro means a lot more than someone you just met on youtube who could not even be a drummer at all.
He said that some drummers who play physical music use to much energy. He showed how to do the same thing but with out wasting energy. And getting a better sound out of the drum and cymbals.
you know what I mean then! No disrespect to Travis, he's a great player in his own right, I just cringe when smashes the crap outta his cymbals, as Jojo says in his broken english "there comes a point where they don't sound very good", so true.
I'm 30 and can't imagine playing like that ever in my life. Nevermind a couple years ago. I try to rip him off ,. and of course Buddy and all of them, as much as possible!! It's not a cop out but a compliment !
Absolutely. Dynamic phrasing, particularly the good use of accents will transform the playing from merely 'The Notes' to something which generates a great musical feel.
Why are his rants so god damn groovy?!
fleajr1412 10 months ago
i agree with jojo...but in the same time...there are styles where u cant just touch the cymbals...i mean..death metal come one...

It so easy to pick apart something you hear. But how many of you can
sit next to this man and play with the same on the spot technique. We are
living in a world full of people talking shit and showing nothing. We as musicians
need to have more LOL for each other. Just learn the basics and work together. Show us what you do with it. Check out D.Weckl

why he says metal drumming is bad? Too much energy, bla bla bla
SPAMagent 2 years ago
He said that some drummers who play physical music use to much energy. He showed how to do the same thing but with out wasting energy. And getting a better sound out of the drum and cymbals.
BmGdrums 2 years ago 4
He was using a generalization about how a lot of drummers that play physically demanding genres of music i.e. metal use too much energy
and JoJo shows an example where he isn't using so much energy and he's getting a better sound on his drums
and why play so hard if your drumkit is already mic'd?
