I really had fun watching this show, especially the dance segment when he would let each person get up and freestyle. If I remember, I think he pulled them up let them do their one minute of fame and shove them off. I sometimes wonder if they anyone would stumble would they come back and sue? Nah......not in them days. Those crazy kids were there for the moment.
I can't believe I just found this clip and I've looked a lot over the years. I Produced and Directed the RDS Show from the inception until Larry Thomas took over toward the end of the show's run. Happy to share thoughts with others. God how i loved Lola who was the only straight (not sexually) one among all of us. Cheers! We had a seriously good time doing this show.
I really enjoyed dancing on The Real Don Steele show. It was a blast! I remember the positive energy that he gave to his show. We all loved him.
A side note to Janis (Lana Lloyd) You cheapen a good time with your "groupie" comments which were totally delusional. I suppose that is your claim to fame. After all of this time Janis, that is a shame.
@LadyOfTheLakeLA I used to love watching this show. I was too young for my mom to let me go to a place like that so I would dance in front of the TV set in my makeshift glitter/glam outfit and fruity toed platform shoes. It was fun but I bet it was a lot more fun to be on the show.
I am Leo valenzuela I reappeared thruout the summer and finally aired in september of 1971 or 1972, I was there with the Queen and Princess' of the all States Picnic in Ontario California. The real Don Steele almost pushed me off the platform and so we ended up his guest's at the Nickleodeon restaurant next door. a historic site.
LA rock n roll TV. I remember falling flat on the floor when Kami Riddle, wife of Sam Riddle, danced alone to KEEP ON CHOOGLIN', panties showing and everything moving great. I thought I had gone to heaven. Can they show this on TV???? Where are they now? Anyone, help?
I am Llana Lloyd who danced religiously on the show 1973-1974. I am the blonde in the black halter top dancing with the tall blonde albino peacock, Donna Welch...We used the lesbian mystique which attracted many rock stars when we'd get our cheap fame flaunting it at the Rainbow in Hollywood. We became super-groupies and I made a movie called "Glitter Goddess of the Sunset Strip" which recaps my 70s years! Don Steele was the bomb! I got to be Killer Kane's groupie with the NEW YORK DOLLS gig!
I take it the sound is only in the right channel to simulate the effect of TVs of the time, which usually just had one speaker to the right of the screen?
Hey, I just saw you Gaylynn52. Nice dance moves and outfit. What a great time to be on the dance scene with the Real Don Steele. A great musical era during boss radio 93 KHJ. From Farah Fawcett in the first commercial to the gas guzzler Pontiac -- and this is after the '73 oil crisis. No wonder Detroit went down the dumps.
RIP Farrah. Great clip of Farrah Fawcett in a Lady Schick blowdryer commercial. And of course, it's outasight seeing the Real Don Steele in all his glorious awesomeness.
This show was the shizzznit on Saturday nights on Channel 9(KHJ)in LA. Even us black kids watched this show faithfully & LOVED the dance contest....DEVIL WITH THE BLUE DRESS...BLUE DRESS....DEVIL WITH THE BLUE DRESS ON!!!. THESE were the days.
Oh my God, I can't believe you have this!! I was a rabid follower of this show as well as it's predecessor, "...fantastic stuff to watch while growing up! Oh, incidentally, not only is Farah in that commercial but a 20 something Angela Cartwright too!
Lola received a lot of "jail fan mail". We were told, if you were "good" all week in the L.A. county jail, you got to watch our show there Saturday night.
Don was the strongest working performer I have ever worked with... even with all of his... drinking and drugs.
Don and this show taught me how to survive in this business and I can never thank him enough. I do miss him.
I can not tell you all how wonderful it was to find this video here. It brings back some great memories. I was Don's producer on The Real Don Steele Show and at his stint with TenQ (KTNQ) radio. We was with him on Death Race 200 and Grand Theft Auto.
Our Director, Larry Thomas and I still have lunch together a few times each month.
The dark-haired RDS dancer was our only regular. She was on every show with others that only worked a few shows each. Her name is Lola. (more in next post)
Larry-I was a RDS dancer that worked often with Lola. Dave Dawson was the producer that hired me. I was told that other shows footage was destroyed...is that true. I would love to find some of the footage I was in to show son & grandbabies. I show I remember that I did was shot out on Melrose Ave with Don in a Gorilla outfit with the dancer in Jane outfits. Dancing to the "Burtha Butt Sister" song. I would be very grateful for any help in finding any of the shows I danced on.
I don't believe it! Ahhh! Too cool, I used to watch "The Real Don Steel Show" every Saturday in my early teen years. And yes, I remember Boss City on KHJ like it was yesturday.
And yeah, Don Steele passed away in Aug, '97 from lung cancer.
Wasn't there another show Don Steele hosted b4 the Real Don Steele show, late 60's early 70's? (maybe not Don Steele)I remember seeing Steppenwolf Born to be Wild/Magic Carpet Ride on that show.
Boss City alright! I remember seeing David Bowie for the first time on that show...think it was a clip he did for Space Oddity, and I remember sitting at our kitchen table watching it on our little black and white portable. Hell, they even had Kenny Rogers on there doing "Ruby"...wonderful memories, I tell ya!
the real don steele is not real anymore...he passed away, regrettably.i do not know when but he was a showman...anyone remember him as well, from khj radio.....during the 1960s,their claim to fame was boss radio in southern california.one of the highest rated radio stations in so. cal. for a long time. and don became one of the so-called boss jocks at khj
No, Farrah had not yet become a Charlie's Angel, but she had already had many TV roles before this commercial and she even did a pilot for a show in which she co-starred 3 years before this. Commercials were paying the bills.
Right On! If there's more of this, please post it. Ah, the energy crisis- that Pontiac ad at the end has the air of despair to it-theres an implication that 'You can get good mileage out of our car, if only you idiots would drive them properly'
This is amazing...what a great show!
