The original mini, Mclaren F1, mclaren mp4-12c, Lotus Exige, lotus Elise, Lotus Carlton, Rolls Royce, Bently, MG (untill they were bought by rover), Jaguars, AC, Ariel, Aston Martin,
we made lots of great cars, just very expensive, our cheap cars however were mostly shit x.x
@SayreFoxx Mini was a good car...Mclaren F1 was probably the best supercar ever made (my favourite)....Mclaren mp4-too high tech-shit,lotus-unreliable shit, rolls roys-unreliable shit,Bently-unreliable shit,MG-THE BIGGEST SHIT OF THE BUNCH,Jaguars-unreliable shit,AC (i am not familiar with that brand,Ariel (also not familiar with that brand)....Aston Martin-Good cars but Porsche and Ferarri were always much much better cars...
@SayreFoxx And not only that all British cars are unreliable but running costs for British cars are the biggest...Parts for British cars are more expensive than any brand....I know that because I drive a Land Rover...And let me tell you something,I will never, ever buy a British car...NEVER EVER EVER EVER!
@SayreFoxx Every moddern Land Rover is crap...Range Rovers, Discos,Freelanders....Only Land Rovers that were good were Land Rovers that were made some 40-50 years ago...
There's an old woman locally still using one of these regularly on a main road which statistically has about the highest fatality rate in Scotland. She's brave!
erm...I feel sorry for anybody who has an accident in this, I feel even sorrier for them owning this, and this is gunna make me slow down, just seen the footage for a mk5 fiesta like what I drive, nasty
1 star when it was brand new! mine is 16 years old so obviously i have to do regular checks to make sure it stays in the condition it is, one in which consists of looking out the window when its raining to check it hasnt eroded away!
i used to have a k - series k - reg metro, i used to propa bomb that about if i would have watched that before i think i may have left it at home and walked LOL!
You are going to lose your legs in this one that is almost sure. Well in a crash like this that is.. there is a difference in a test and a real crash.. but not that much.
But I have to say Rover and updating designs.. yeah not really.
got a rover 100 97 with 120bhp 1600 k series 16v engine . super light because the crumple zone is your knees. which makes it a lot faster than other 16 16v similar sized cars
Im not planning on driving head on into stuff anyway.
@Pietaster89 Exactly! It is gone because people skitted and derided our cars even when they were good, Look around you, there are still LOADS of mid to late nineties Rovers still on the road. They can't have been that bad if there are millions still on the roads after 15-20 years!!! Rover became the whipping boy and for some part, deserved it, but at the end of the day, lack of investment and a reluctant public killed them as well as the careers of thousands of British jobs...
To be honest there is loads of newer cars from Ford mostly that never even got crash tested. The Escort got delayed its crash test as Ford wear frightened of the results they would get from it.
The last model year of the Ford Escort in the 90's got EuroNCAP 2-stars because it did so badly;the replacement Focus literally wipes the floor with it, achieving a EuroNCAP 4-star rating(and it did so much better). Since then Ford has strived for safety and made it's cars to perform even better in a crash. But Rover never thought of that;and merely fitted airbags to ageing designs than to make things safe from the outset with improved car designs.
i cant believe i used to drive one of these. AnthonyUK is spot on. the 100 was just a bubble metro and essentially funding was being ploughed into the newer 200, 400 and 600 and so the 100 was left to its own devices. shame though as i think the 100 is a nice looking car.
The 200/400 and 600 also didn't do that well in euroncap crash tests only getting 2or 3 stars;when others have moved the game on that much Rover lagged behind.
@AnthonyUK The Rover 400/45/MG ZS was never submitted for Euro NCap testing. The 5 door Honda Civic which shared the platform got 3 stars, but with a strike through on the last star.
All Rover thought was that by fitting airbags it could be made safer;there's a lot more to safe car design than merely fitting airbags to existing old designs. Ideally, the pedals shouldn't push your legs back, the steering wheel shouldn't move into the chest, and excessive loads should not hurt the driver/passenger in a side impact collision, and the footwells shouldn't deform badly and there should not be any structures under the dash which may injure and the doors should still open after.
You know why this car has such a poor test result though. Its becase Rover never bothered to properly update it, like many of their cars. Underneath this car had a design that led back to the early 80s. Its also a reason why it didn't stand much of a chance against its rivals.
@Genius83 It wasnt that they "never bothered", it was lack of money. They did update it from it's 1980 launch actually, once in 85, then in 90 then in 95 when it became the 100, they fitted side impact beams that bettered the NCAP result slightly
@laughingharry Fairly 'small' updates though. The 100 still traced most of its roots to the original. The whole reason I posted that previous post though was more aimed at all these people who keep saying the Metro was a good car. It wasn't. I have nothing againts people who like the car - even I smile whenever I see one for some bizarre reason, and not every car I like is 'good'. It has charm! But at no point, regardless of a WhatCar? car of the year award in 1991, was this a good car.
@Genius83 Completely new front superstructure to accommodate the K Series, redesigner suspension were the biggest changes, apart from that, you are right the original car was basically unchanged. I have owned 4 in my life and loved them, I loved the tiny cabin and go-kart like handling and cute looks, but as you say, they were VERY rust prone and needed more TLC than most superminis of the time...
@laughingharry I guess to be fair the second generation (post 90 cars) weren't as bad for rust. Oh and yeah, the K-series engine must have been one of the most refined engines of any supermini at the time! Shame about the weak head gaskets. I've heard the MG Metro and Metro GTa were good fun.
@somervillearron Good point - the design would have all been from the 70s to put on sale for the 80s. Ach I hate bashing the Metro/100 though. Even though this car was awful and has become a joke, I still smile when I see one thats been kept in good condition. Can't be many left now on the UK roads!
@Genius83 yeah i know all you see is 100s i have not seen a actual metro for atleast 7 years we had a rover 100 maybe 2008
was in great nick just to slow with a full tank and full of family we were coming back from inverness with suitcases me my mum and her partner driving and we came off the m/way put a full tank in then it wouldnt go over 40 for about 60 miles we had to sit with the hazards on going half on the hard shoulder
@Genius83 when we were young this old man was parked in front of the shop he went into the shop and left the car running my mate only about 12 at the time got in and just stalled it into the car in front and left a decent dent on both
he jamp out and we sat and watched as if nothing happend

Rover was under invested and British people have little faith in British industry. People don't give a shit where stuff is made so long as its cheap.
The metro is an 80's development so of course it won't meet todays safety requirements. Don't drive like a prick and you won't crash.
