If the republicans hadnt allowed banks to do whatever they want from 1999 to 2006 this wouldnt have ever happened. Republicans allowed the securitization of mortgages, relaxed leverage limits, neutered the SEC, and allowed the bribing of rating agencies and fraudulent purchase of credit default swaps. That is the entire banking collapse right there.

Terms run from January to January. The foul language does not enhance your inaccurate facts, but increases the fact that you are ignorant. The fact is, there has been a lot of oversight, and a lot of mistakes, and the persons in charge now are not the ones to correct it.

During this time Frank sat on the House Financial Services Committee which regulates Fannie, Freddie, and other lending institutions. Also at this time Fannie’s Senior VP was a guy named Gerald McMurray who was a huge campaign donator to and former employee of Frank. While all this was going on Frank was stonewalling any attempted reforms of Fannie and Freddie.

@sep0507 When the housing market crashed Fannie and Freddie were holding $5.4 trillion dollars worth of home mortgages. Fannie and Freddy told mortgage lenders to write loans to people meeting X criteria and they would either buy or securitize said loans. Fannie and Freddie being the two largest mortgage giants in America forced independent lender into lowering their standards in order to compete. The FDIC, FRB and the FFIEC regulate banks not Freddie and Fannie.

@MrSteveParr Fannie and Freddie followed the guidelines for redlining mortgage applicants. They didn't twist any banks arm to loan money to those that couldn't afford to make the payments. Those decisions were left UP TO THE BANKS. Also, I didn't say Freddie or Fannie regulated anything, only DEALT with those banks. The truth is, nearly 84% of ALL MORTGAGES were held by non banks in 2007. That's a fact, and spin it any way you want, it's still a FACT.

Of course Barney was alledgedly having a homosexual relationship with a high-ranking executive of Fannie Mae at the time, but that shouldn't cloud his judgement, right?
