  • Be grateful that it doesn't last a year... This guy was ( and still is) so funny

  • this man deserves....everything

  • this song made me laugh so hard XD

  • This gentleman is a legend!

  • Jfjjfjfhfgf

  • Hun ngn

  • @6funswede: -1 for gratuitous posting of an Amazon referral link so that you might get more points there.

  • @lsloan0000, I am a 56 year old Norwegian and I have never bought anything on Amazon.com. The posting of the link is because I am a total Tom Lehrer fan, and I know that his stuff is best preserved if people buy that Norwegian TV-concert on a DVD :-) It is also a cheap way to take care of an important part of the American history of comedy.

  • fuck you i love tha jews i am a jew bitch

  • @frapcrakers He's saying everyone That isnt a jew, hate the jews.

  • @frapcrakers Did you know he was born a jew?

  • I absolutely love the snark in his voice when he says "It's National everyone-smile-at-one-another-hood week." It cracks me up every time.

  • I reckon we should create a National Brotherhood Week and listen to nothing but this song all week!

  • @bigotmaster My point exactly

  • As a Jew, I approve this song and give it the Seal of Jewproval

  • @ljoufhk To the camps with you.

  • @crispoish *waits* ...... Nope, still here.

  • @ljoufhk i totally agree

  • HILARIOUS

  • I'm not gonna have anything against 21 people (until Monday)

  • and everybody hates the jews,.... funny

  • the rest of the year hates this week. durp de durp de durp. GEV MA THUMBS! (lol)

  • I'm listening to this because it's National Friendship Week. :^)

  • favorite song from Tom :)

  • He's from a Jewish background and family, the song is poking fun at all these constant ridiculous hate and racism we have had for years and still have today.

If a white christian sung this they'd be hated for it though :/

Oh well I can see the point the song is making plus he is allowed to sing it cause of his background :L

  • One of my favorites from 1964.

  • wâhnsînn_sÙcht_mål_NÄch:_geldeasy_ÀÚf_goØglÉ

  • Granted this is a swipe at all the Kumbya b.s. that crops up every now and then, but does anyone know if there actually was a thing referred to as "National Brotherhood Week"?

  • @hellhound47bravo3 the third link

    lmgtfy.com/?q=National+Brotherhood+Week

  • @hellhound47bravo3 National Brotherhood Week actually was a thing, yes. It wasn't very popular, to say the least.

  • Controversially FUNNY Song!!! :P

  • this audience = complete and total failure.

  • It's funny because it's true...

  • He's from a jewish family, so... he's allowed to do this

  • It's American as Apple Pie!!!! ROFL!!!

  • 1:05 says it all

  • I love Yiddish people! Their culture is good!

  • whats great is that he knows the dangerous topic of which he speaks and though some are offended i think hes brilliant

  • okay pause at beginning of video and press play. press 9 over and over for orgasm

  • those were the days when you could still have a bit of a laugh and not be called racist. shame those days have gone

  • @ThePlanetchild Lots of people are listening to this right now and not calling him racist.

  • This is from Tom Lehrer's THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS album, recorded in July 1965 and released on the Reprise Records label. RS 6179(stereo) and R 6179(mono).

  • BRILLIANT

  • XD everyone hates the jews

  • WTF is this!!???

  • *sigh* good ol' fashion discrimination!

  • Everyone hates the Jews, indeed.

  • super video fühle mich aber voll einsam und suche deswegen süße boys zum texten

  • "and everyone hates the Jews" - ha! that's hilarious. Notice the crowd doesn't laugh or applaud at all until a little golf clap at the end.

  • @makenna88: I think the material hits too close to home for anyone to applaud..its a pretty biting commentary on American society.....this stuff was recorded in the early sixties and if you are old enough to recall, America was not quite as " refined" as it is today.

  • @Spartreeman people are just more careful about where they discriminate now

  • @makenna88 I have the "That Was The Year That Was" recording that he performed at The Hungry I and that line got a huge laugh there! Either the Norwegian audience didn't understand the words and the end applause was an act of politeness on their part or they didn't find it funny. Humor is the hardest thing to translate from one culture to another, especially social sensibilities.

  • @Elric33239 true...very true i've been trying to introduce this music / lyrics to some of my co-workers with mixed results ^^

  • lets be friends with ppl we despise, for a day

let's be friendly to justin biber just for once =).......nahhh x)

  • The funniest part about this song is that it's making fun of the actual national holiday "National Brotherhood Week", which was basically saying "Okay, get along for a week and you can hate each other for the other fifty-one, okay?" It was quickly abandoned.

  • Tom Lehrer's last name means teacher in Yiddish.

  • @MsMonarda It comes from the German word 'lehrer' which also means teacher. I presume that one of the languages borrowed from another.

  • @DisneyEnvy Yiddish has a lot of German in it. Some words are the same.

  • @MsMonarda And in German :)

  • Written for the long ago tv show, "That was the week that was" The original intro was;"One first day of National Brotherhood Week Malcom X was assassinated, starting the week off with a bang!"

    Dale

  • @vonmazur1 Thank you Dale, for reminding me of the intro. I have loved this song (and lots of others by Tom Lehrer) for a loooong time!

  • @ladybugz613=== I guess no one remembers all this from 60's...Tom was a bit nutty, but really great!

    Dale

  • @vonmazur1 -- Yes. Some of us remember.

  • I love this song, lol

  • For those unfamiliar with him, "Cassius Clay" was Muhammad Ali's name before he changed it.

  • i was crying at the hindus hate the muslems and everyone hates the jews lolololololol SOOOOOOOOOOOOO funny

  • And so it goes.....

  • This song just sums up my Grandma actually! She's very 'keeping up appearances' but she doesn't half have a nasty mouth when she wants to!

  • legendary

  • .....what a bigot. I love it. xD Win for National Brotherhood Week.

  • love dis song

  • love it <3

  • When is National Brotherhood week anyway?

  • Comment removed

  • ah Tom Lehrer...ALL HAIL THE KING OF THE SMARTASSES!!! He is truly my hero.

  • must have a pretty hard crowd...no one's laughing?

  • @phoebe969, yes, this was an Norwegian audience who proved that a "reasonable understanding of English" is not the same as "comprehension", although Lehrer did het a few laughs. The audiences were usually not miked in those day.

  • @6funswede i thought it might be soemthign liek that, anyway thanks for the info

  • @6funswede You can hear them somewhere in the background if you listen carefully

  • @weeknieunknowing, true, you can, but when The Tom Lehrer Collection was released American reviewers wrote that the audience is so silent that the concert became "almost a studio recording". Click on my (stupid) username and read the CHANNEL description.

  • @6funswede lol, they put a performance in front of a Norwegian audience on DVD?!? Well, at least the laughter isn't up to annoying levels.

  • @spinynorman230, yes they did. The trouble is that Tom Lehrer was never invited to play a whole concert on American TV and that many recordings made on two-inch videotape were deleted in the United States. A reviewer wrote that -- because the laughter is mostly absent -- the concert is almost like a studio recording. The best thing is of course that one of Lehrer's last paid appearances was captured to video.

  • @6funswede The original "that was the year that was tom leher" album, the audience were peeing in their pants with laughter. This crowd here were on medication or something!

  • @fadethetrade, no, as I said, they were Norwegian with a good grasp of English, but lacking the cultural references as well as comprehension. And maybe they were a bit shocked too?

  • @6funswede well, this is about the american culture, so it's natural that norwegians wont get everything?

  • @ilovecakexD, yes it is (or was). But Tom Lehrer made the best out of it, and there is, in fact, some laughter. The crowd was not miked, so it´s difficult to hear it all. But, no they didn´t get the whole picture, no.

  • I wish Tom Lehrer had been in Newcastle town centre today !

  • He can wise-crack about Jews because he IS one...

  • and EVVVERybody hates the jews...

  • I will once again ask people to click on the stupid username 6funswede and visit the channel for more Tom Lehrer live on video. If you like it, forward the link to people you know who appreciate comedy and satire. I`m not saying that Tom Lehrer loves me, because he don`t. But on the other hand, he could have had the channel and the videos removed back in 2007. He didn`t do that. Visit the channel and get a free laugh!

  • On vinyl, it's "Lena Horne and Sheriff Clark are dancing cheek to cheek." Which is why, for some odd reason, I came here to say...RIP Lena Horne.

  • @bwworld, yes this is true. Thanks. Read the video description. Click on my stupid user name too.

  • @bwworld I had the same thought. His stuff is relevant in many ways today. Great satirist.

  • And everybody hates the jews! xD

  • Everyone hates the jews!

jkjkjk, every week is brother hood week

  • im jewish and i love this!

  • This song is great! Its super funny! Its awesome when someone can make light of a situation or belief that too many people waste their entire lives trying to start fights about. So to all of you who enjoyed this video, " LIFE IS A COMEDY!" so keep on laughing.

  • I've got his whole collection...My dad had all his albums...Grew up on this shit...Many of his songs are timeless...

  • This video is now out on DVD. Please read the updated video description or visit the channel page!

  • WoW a song about the ignorance in the US. & He even admits it, "Its As American As Apple Pie". Will everyone who still agrees with the lyrics of this song please EVOLVE already! with the rest of us.

  • People dont evolve speices do.

  • for christs sake he was/is a comedian its satire get a sense of humour jesus!

  • @bellagia777

"It's American as Apple Pie" is just a common phrase from those times, meaning it's part of American culture.

Racism still exists, sexism still exists (both are quite frequent still in the Southern folks), and there are still people who, even though claiming to be doing things in the name of "equality" are just as racist and sexist as any of the others who are open about.

This song still rings true, if not in all the States.

  • I loved it XD

  • My 8th grade math teacher would play Tom Lehrer songs as a reward to the class after our weekly tests (this was in 1963-64.) I think the teacher had taken some classes from Tom at some point.

  • damn, this is good!

  • but ya i love the song =]

  • if you dont listen to the whole song it sounds really rasicst.

    "and eveybody hates the jews"

  • @wraithfreind Funnily enough, Lehrer himself was Jewish, and born to a Jewish family.

  • thanks but i knew that, its an unspoken rule in comedy that ONLY jews can mock and make fun of jews(most of the time anyway) =]

  • @wraithfreind agreed...i make fun of jews sometimes too, but i'm only half jewish =P love this song tho! soo funny

  • And isnt that true?

True hurts but MUST be heard.

    Great one TOM!

  • Tom was Jewish himself, he wasn't lying about what he said for the time that this song was created in.

  • @mrwascaly42

Aww... Turn that frown upside down. :D

I guess your just a bit pessimistic. Should be cured easily with a hug and a nice fun game called "Submarino". . .

  • reminds of the 60's...I still have this album..one of the decades best.

  • The rest of the year hates National Brotherhood Week...

  • XD thats good

  • LMFAO and everyone hates the jews

  • @jesusharney which i am one. lol

  • What a genius...

I don't understand every single phrase (English is my secondary language as well) but it's quite amusing...

Thoughtful, ironic... I really like it.

  • One would think that this video would be inaccurate after so many years, but it isn't at all. Very sad that this country still has so many racial problems even though we're all over the world hypocritically telling people to be tolerant.

  • @johnsarc Very true. It's pretty pathetic really.

  • I turned this on, and the at the very first line my sis just completely cracking up, and then RIGHT when she stopped laughing, it said, "Lena Horne and Sheriff Clarke are dancing cheek to cheek." she started cracking up again.

  • Everyone hates the Jews.

  • Bullshit!

  • That's the whole point, stupid :-)

  • YouTube is able to give us these "marvellous" new channels, but seems incapable to manage the comments in the right order. My first comment was meant for sidchuownz. :-)

  • So "Reply" rather than comment straight onto the video. 8)

  • Yeah, thanks, but even that doesn't work at times (as we might see in this specific case... or not. YT is full of surprises :-))

  • Marlene55M, this is true. Even when clicking "reply" you cannot be absolutely sure about where your reply will appear :-)

  • @ 6funswede: Don't we love YouTube... not only for this bug! :-)

  • Marlene 55M, ja, natürlich und ist das seltene Videos, die außerhalb Norwegens nie gesehen wurden :-)

  • I am glad that you share it. Besides, Norway is beautiful, if I may say so... been there decades ago and loved it.

  • OK, I suck ...but was well meaning. =)

  • Of course you are.... well meaning! :-)

  • LAMO fucking hilarious. He's pretty good too, it's gotta be hard as hell to play piano and sing at the same time (especially when you're not even looking at your hands).

  • Throughout the middle ages, the Jews refused to accept the absolute authority of the church. They also rejected that the monarchs of Europe were appointed by God, through the church. Opposing either group was grounds for execution. If the European peasants saw that they could disregard the tyrants that their nobles and priests were, there would be revolution, so the gov'ts of that time acted to protect themselves, by killing the Jews who questioned their authority.

  • The sunnis hate the shiites...

but i love i love the jews

  • And the republicans hate the democrats and the democrats hate the republicans...

  • I love that line "and everybody hates the Jews".

It's not everybody, but it does seem like it sometimes...

  • the only people who've never committed genocide... yet have served as scapegoats for centuries.

The only democracy in the Middle East. The only place you can be a safe practicing Christian, Hindu, any religion in the Middle East except Muslim, is.... you fill in the blank.

Every barrel has a few rotten apples, they're not all perfect, so what. I really don't see how blaming the Jews ever helped anything in history, and it won't now. Just stop yo' hatin'.

  • Geez.... Jokey McJokerson homeboy.... I love my jewy buddies

  • "the only people who've never committed genocide"

    ...Riiight.

  • Classic satire!

I think I'm a litte bit in love with him.

Tom is like an incredibly charming Leonard from the Big Bang Theory.

He was geek chic before it was cool. Love the glasses, btw. They remind me of Quinto's.

  • Timeless Song =)

  • "Be grateful that it doesn't last all yearrr!"

    ROFL

  • The smile at 1:22 was precious

  • I first heard this on Dr. Demento's radio show in the 80's. KMET 94.7

  • i like this song

  • Wait, why do everyone hate the Jews? I don't get it.

  • Probably because the Jews are one of the only major religious groups who haven't commited out-and-out genocide on another (officially, at any rate)

Always pick on the weak guys, remember?

  • But the Jews ain't weak. They are huge. They could beat the crap out of anyone if they wanted to.

  • Oh, nobody is denying that, lest of all me (I have jewish roots). But it's more what you've done throughout history, not your physical numbers.

  • It's a cultural stereotype. The term being "jew'd" comes from that fact. It's silly but so is the song.

  • mineowyn, Throughout history, Jews have been discriminated against in nearly every culture throughout the world. For example, when the black death came to, everyone blamed the Jews. When World War I was lost, the Germans blamed the Jews. The Russians hated the Jews too for various reasons. And that's why it's considered that everyone hates the Jews

  • Yeah but there must be a reason why you would hate something. Seems like no one who hate Jews can say exactly why they hate Jews.

  • They hate them just because they're different. Why did white people hate black people? Cause of their skin tone? Last time I checked, being darker or lighter than your friend doesn't make you superior or inferior to them. In general, theres just no reason behind the hatred and racism besides ignorance. Simple as that. The world would be a better place if people chose to open their OWN eyes and ears and stop seeing and hearing just what their told.

  • Well, originally the Christians hated them because they murdered Jesus. But that is not the only reason. During the Middle Ages Jews used to be the only people in town who borrowed money at interest, because Christians weren't allowed to. Also, Jews weren't allowed to have technical jobs and so they very often were tradespeople which made them rich and the rest of the people jealous. And these aspects led to the massive hate against Jews before WWII and in fact to Holocaust.

  • Actually Christians didn't like them much because they were killing them, as well as the romans were killing them too. Jesus was a Jew, so honestly I don't know WHY you would think that Christians hate jews.

  • Because most Christians have this amazing ability to forget that Jesus was a Jew.

  • A true fact that I have found remarkable all my life, I mean children are told Jesus was the "King of the Jews" for goodness sake.

  • many people dislike the jews for a multitude of reasons, most of them ridiculous, over in israel and the middle east, its all about that silly stuff we call religion, i personally think religion is the total cause of evil and hate in this world for all of history, always has been and always will, in the U.S. people dislike the jews because they are overly demanding, VERY VERY cheap (ask waitress/waiters), its a personality thing for the most part. Also very negative people in general. Now u know

  • agreed.

Ban religion and eeveryone is happier

  • People will just find some other reason to hate each other.

  • Do you know what affirmative action is?

the US government makes asians have a harder time getting into a college because they think that they have an "advantage" (being born smarter or some stupid bullshit like that) and let african americans get into college easier because "to make up for them being traditionally discriminated in the past"

So if an asian gets say an 95% and an american gets an 90%, the american gets in, and the same for "white americans" to african americansAnd this is real too

  • Duh, I"m an American, of course I know what it is. I've been a "victim" of it's policies.

If people would stop whining and overcome what obstacles are put in front of them, perhaps we might all get along better.

And frankly, colleges are hot and heavy to fill up with more "minorities" anyway.

In fact, it's probably much more of a disadvantage to be a Caucasian than anything else...

Though I'm sort of at a loss what this has to do with the song.

  • Yes. The US government does no such thing that changed the difficulty of any minority's ability to get into a college. I think you may be referring to colleges whom still have racist tendencies.

Affirmative actions works for all "races" that have historically be discriminative. Which includes the Chinese who worked aside the African American building the railroads; and the Japanese who were wrongfully interned put in camps. Unfortunately other Asian ethnic groups have been categorized with them.

  • You say to not categorize diffrent asian ethnic groups, but thats what you do when you separate japanese from chinese, and so on. You can't put a whole nation of people together in one bunch. There are some Americans that are stupid but most of them are not, and there is Norwegians who are not seaven feet, tho some of us are.

(sorry for broken English if it exsists, (secondary language))

  • Bravo for everyone who learns a second language!

  • True, I'm not seven feet at all :-)

  • I disagree...the cause of hate and evil is...well, we are humans who are capable of higher thought. Animals do not know of "hate" or "evil". And religion may currently be the source of much of it these days, it won't go away with its disappearance.

And presenting a negative stereotype of Jews above is simply reinforcement of that.

  • When Communism ruled in Russia, the Russians, using Trotsky and Jewish financial power in Wall Street as a pretext, blamed Jews for Capitalist infiltra
