  • so beautiful, this perfomance means the entire life to me.

  • How to comment on classical music, YouTube style. Lesson No. 94...

    1. How the two dislikes on this video are probably 'Beiber' fans and should be taken out and shot for their complete lack of culture.

    2. How this interpretation is CLEARLY too fast/slow/clean/not clean and how Heifetz is CLEARLY a far, far better violinist.

    3. How this piece reminded me of my dead cat and how it moves me to tears and how Bach is such a genius of a composer and Mozart is so over-rated.

  • @Nizlopi2 it's depressing because you're right.

  • : )

    : D

    *_*

    :, )

  • the world is lucky to have these recordings. I just discovered nathan milstein - I stumbled upon him on youtube ... it was love at first listen.. where has he been my whole life???

  • A giant with Oistrakh and the great Russian tradition. Milstein was an inveterate fiddler - he was constantly playing tunes he knew or heard and worked on his fingering all the time. His quick light bowing technique makes Bach just beautiful.

  • Bravissimo!

  • heifetz fan,like me,but I like them both

  • Agree all the above. Interesting that 56,000 wave checked-in here to witness Milstein accomplishing a small miracle, whereas over 2,000,000 have logged in to hear Vanessa-Mae play the same piece but sounding like there's a heavy dish-cloth over the microphone (except I don't think the problem is the recording).

  • 2 Dislikes? Who would dislike this?

  • @MrUrochordata Heifetz and Pearlman lol

  • good

  • i just noticed that the piece ends at π

  • Very good looking violinist!! most perfect.

Is anyone see better violinist than Milstein especially for Bach?

  • One thing that really begins to annoy me about people's comments on classical music videos is the harsh criticism that people write about almost anything. Truthfully, the reason people play is not to be criticized. Music is a gift to the listener, and it should be accepted with love. I advise that when we listen to the music, especially that of someone of this caliber, we should allow the feelings of the artist to reach our soul, not our extremely analytical minds.

  • You guys should check out Bela Fleck's version of this on banjo.

  • furthermore if you want to here absolutely perfect intonation, vanessa mae does play all the notes perfectly in tune you should go there and leave this video alone

  • @kevaughn1030 Concerteza você é um tremendo retardo que não entende nada de violino e muito menos de musica, quando ouvir violinistas no calibre de Milstein é uma ofensa você citar Vanessa Mae que é um lixo de violinista.

  • folks, if you think this man's intonation is flawed in any way, this just means you yourself have a flawed concept of intonation on a violin and its function.

  • The passage at 2:01 is totally awesome!! Never heard it played like that before.

  • the sound quality of his playing is far more beautiful than Vanessa Mae. case closed.

  • 1716 Stradivarius......I got this from checking reviewing the article "Nathan Milstein, Violin Virtuoso, Dies at 89." From The Washington Post. Washington Post, 1992

  • Vanessa....how can she compare with Milstein.

  • I know he lived for 88 years, but it simply wasn't long enough!

  • Magic. Does anyone have any info on the instrument he is playing?

  • Comment removed

  • love love love love love. this is BEAUTIFUL! what an interesting bow hold, i like it.

  • nice flowage haha

  • Even though his intonation is questionable, I really like how he brings out the moving line from 2:05 - 2:09.

  • This guy blows me away.

  • Meanwhile, while this trip to paradise is available, nearly 1.5 million have watched Vanessa Mae (try to) play this. C'mon, folks. This is only a click away, and this is real music.

  • @silverroka Indeed!!! It's interesting to see that the comments have been disabled on so many of her videos. She's the best example of The Emperor's New Clothes about.

  • I'm just glad this video has more views since the last time I seen it every time it remains the same I like it that way.

  • This is BY FAR the best interpretation I've ever heard of the Preludio. I'm learning this right now so I need all the inspiration I can get lol. Thanks, uploader!

  • The best verison of this partita, period. @1:09 to @1:16 is very different from most I heard as well. Great phrasing.

  • amazing sound and musical understanding. I love it!!!!!! fantastic!!

  • wow

  • Nathan Milstein is a true master, but theres others out there as well, in my own opinion i think Milstein is AWESOME and i would choose him over anyone

  • Someone's probably said this but the section that starts at 2:04 is flawless.

  • Distinguishing between the two is pointless in all honesty, but Milstein's mastery of Bach makes him the obvious choice for me. His interpretation of Bach is the pinnacle of his career, even if (and I agree with you there) Heifetz is in general a better violinist.

  • The Grumiaux Bach recordings are also awesome.

  • I love how he accents the fugue @2:04

  • "As a child (of seven years old), he started violin studies (as suggested by his parents, to keep out of mischief) [..]".

He became one of the 20th century's most prominent violinists "to keep him out of mischief " - great;).

  • lovely but i think Heifetz captures it a little better he is more aggresive playin it

  • Jascha Heifeitz was a great performer perhaps, but he really didn't have a clue about Bach and his music.

  • Couldn't agree with you more, although be prepared for lots of thumbs down-Heifetz fanatics can be quite rabid in the face of criticism of their hero.I should know lol

  • Are u sick in the head?????

Heifetz was much better hell even

    Menuhin was a lot better

  • @voxhunden Stupid comments. Milstein seems almost afraid too play it. Check out 'The Master' Heifetz and listen with the big ears u have and come back too me

  • Didn't you already make your point?

  • Yes but didnt u heed me wen i said Heifetz was the best...

  • You have a right to an opinion, but don't expect it to be of, ur, cosmic importance.

  • Personally, I think Heifetz is a better violinist. That doesn't give me the right to force my opinion on others, and that goes for you too.

  • @brainwasher9876 I'll say wat i want about anyone i want and ill pay no apology too anyone ok so fuk u. Heifetz is number 1 always

  • This is a perfect display of the pathology of at least 50% of the Heifetz fans.

  • Sure who said it wasn't perfect

  • lol how dare you come at Jascha Heifetz with insignificant words? Jascha heifetz did understand what he played.. and was considered a legend in bach sonatas... Please when you reach hes level and achiev what he achoeved than you can talk about him... he was a DARN good violinist

  • In my personal opinion (..), with Bach the REAL music happens in between the notes. No-one understood this as well as Nathan Milstein. With regard to Heifetz, I yet have to find proof he did. That's no criticism of his achievements, he just was a different type of musician. It seems that only Heifetz fans are unable to accept the fact that no single musician can have it all. It's called fanaticism, and has nothing to do with the art itself.

  • @voxhunden pleaase...dont compare such great legendary violinists in such a way...each were great in their own aspects

bachs music didnt have any obvious way of being played, each player relied on their own different interpretations to play bach

though i will admit milstein had the greatest bach interpretations ever, theres no doubt that heifetz and every 20th century violinist have proven themselves capable of doing bach justice

  • Bach's music was about time, not about emotion. To me that seems completely obvious, but I don't expect anyone else to feel the same. Except perhaps for the fact that in Bach's time, the concept of emotion as a personal experience didn't even exist - all personal experience existed exclusively in relation to God. This makes an attempt from any romantically inclined musician to do Bach justice at least very, very difficult.

  • What Heifetz must do it better it's clean to violon of N.Milstein befor Maestro Milstein beginnen to play

  • @my666vs777 Go back 2 sleep simpleton

  • N.Milstein is greatest of Bach's interpreter ever! So explain why word-"aggresivity" of Heifeitz in this Partita 3 is "better" then POWERFUL VIRTUOSITY of N.Milstein?

  • I think u must stop to give every time your's primitives opinions, and negative raiting, return to listen Banjo.

  • Why is Banjo less of an instrument???

  • @my666vs777 wat u must do then is go bak 2 school and learn how 2 spell

  • Bach wasnt about being aggressive.. or being passionate.....

  • lol,I can only assume that those leaving thumbs down about my Albert Sammons comment haven't actually heard it.

  • Does anyone know if this was a filmed rehersal?Nathan's Bach is always wonderfully open, but this seems even more unrestrained than usual, and so very powerful.

  • Certified Intergalactic!

  • This is an absolutely breath-taking interpretation on Bach's Partita No. 3 in E! Such flawless technique and wonderful clarity of sound too. Milstein is king of Bach partitas and sonatas!

  • YES! Wooohooo

  • This makes my mouth water.

  • perfect bariolage

perfect all around for that matter

  • Best interpretation of this piece ever. Perfect.

  • LOVE!~

  • i have to admit, this version is a lot more interesting musically than heifetz's version. glad to find one song at least where milstein outshines heifetz.

  • Christian Tetzlaff's is great too.

  • thanks for the suggestion, I'll check it out.

  • Yes, talk about accuracy and perfect tempo. The playing is so perfectly precise.

Good modern female interpretation, listen to Hilary Hahn, also very precise playing.

  • Whenever I need to hear what a Bach partita or sonata is supposed to sound like I go to Milstein. IMO he is the best interpreter of the music. He is heartwrenchingly flawless. I love how at the end he just puts the instrument away XD

  • My god... Easily the cleanest playing ever, he plays bach amazingly. So musical. I love his interpretation of the passage at 2:04. He's a god.

  • @J1mmyJamPot No one is God But God. there is only one God!

  • @J1mmyJamPot

Oh, that spot is totally amazing. Thanks for pointing that out.

  • Great! five stars...

  • view 22222

  • at 1:30 he makes the perfect noise

  • I have listened to this video so many times, and it never fails to move me to tears...

  • Julliard? ...you cant even freaking write the name of that wonderful institution. IT HAS A FREKING "I" in front of the first double L's....freaking dumbass. And you pretend to issue an opinion on music? GET A LIFE...

  • I love that milstein is able to express the musical content so articulately without getting stuck on the notes. Thats what sets him apart from all other violinists in my opinion. At 1:33 he is essentially playing double stops which is not what is written but it sounds ok. He does these kinds of things a lot. He was just a phenomenal musician.

  • Der track ist echt der deepste und realste shit den ich kenne digger...

Probs von Xd0me an den violinenmann

    peace out

  • This is a great piece!

  • stunning virtuosity. Milstein: never a showboat although he had technique to burn. What an incredible man, and so humble. I too would punch anyone who uttered a bad word about Milstein. he is a god of the violin.

  • is his style russian? also, i love his ending. him and jascha heifetz r my favorite at the bach.

  • ''But this guy is still good''.Have some respect this ''guy'' is as good as Heifetz and one of the best violinists ever, if not the best.

  • Milstein has better technique than Perlman. I like Perlman a lot but I prefer Milstein's playing over Perlman's.

  • Absolutely incredible! I'll have a punch at anyone who dares to criticize nathan milstein. He in my mind is the absolute best violinist ever to live. The purity of his sound is something I wish I could create in my own playing. wow. I'd give anything to be able to talk to him. My teacher tells me all these stories about how he played in an orchestra standpartners with milstein, and Its all I can do to not rip the hair out of my head. This is way too long a comment.

  • @violinkid86 While he does have pure sound, his playing style is more suited to baroque era composers, notably Bach. I'd take the Emperor, Heifetz over any other violinist the universe has seen.

  • This video is priceless for generations to come.

While this video is playing, click the same video on another page, so you'll have two same videos playing simultaneously, one a little bit late than the other. You'll see the effect. :-)

  • lo acentos en 2:06 son completamente MAgistrales .....otro nivel de interpretacion....milstein is the best!!

  • Ever better of Heifetz!!

  • I can't play this nearly as clearly!

  • I believe that his recording on DG is a little slower. It is the best recording I've heard of it, although this is also great.

  • dude this is so metal.

  • This is pretty fantastic, What dynamics!

  • OMG the best i've ever heard of this!!! No one does Bach and Beethoven sonatas as well as Milstein.

  • This interpretation is my favourite. Crisp, clear articulation - deep, rich tone - emotive dynamics. Fantastic. For me, this tempo is perfect, I don't consider it 'too fast'. And yes, wow, that last E, beauty itself.

  • I absolutely love Milstein, but this reading of the prelude is too fast.

  • It's ridiculously fast! But his control, tone and dynamics are out of this world and despite its speed I think his interpretation is lovely.

  • You 2 people are ridiculous, I have the sheet music for this 3rd Partita, and it's written in 16th notes. So Milstein's tempo is actually perfect. He's NOT playing it too fast.

  • well it is a bit too fast. just bcos its in 16th notes you don't have to play this fast. you are ridiculous too.

  • How is his bow movement so straight and so perfectly parallel to the bridge. Although he is playing fast, it looks very straight.

  • seriously, people need to stop paying attention to Paris Hilton and start listening to Nathan Milstein

we need to start a civil movement, something like that

  • @crschang1985 i completly agree :)

  • a bit fast...very clean

  • Sounds about right. I'm not sure if metal strings should be allowed (runs for cover).

  • Although I do like this version, I think it sounds better a bit more slow.

  • Das ist das Monopol.

  • is awesome he is very espectacular

  • absolutely incredible.

i wish people like him were still alive.

  • Beautiful, lovely interpretation.

  • This is beautiful =] So much more feeling to it than Heifetz's version! I am inspired and I will learn this piece now =P

  • I saw him play this live. Center stage alone! Balls of granite

  • Wonderful piece & playing.!!!

  • Volume control OMG unheard and amazing. Inspiring and a true testament to BACH...Bravo!

  • The best

  • im learning this but i doubt ill play it like this ever

  • You never know. Keep it up!

  • Simply sublime!

  • mükemmel...

  • gercekten mukemmel :-)
