That's doing a fantastic job in that grass. Anyone who has ever actually used a reel mower in tall grass would appreciate how good of a job that's doing to do anything more than just stopping dead in the grass to begin with.
These are grantastic if you don't have a mad big property. Be warned: mowing the lawn with one of these and flogging the dolphin like you would while using a riding lawnmower is quite a task.
I love all these manual reel mower arguments. Bleh bleh bleh save the earth, bleh bleh bleh gas cuts faster, have no muscle to use a reel mower, I can cut through that in 2mins with a gas mower.
You're all missing the point. Lawn care and having a nicely maintained yard. Doesn't matter which way you choose to do it.
dude...slow down, there is no reason to go fast with a reel mower.
Also...If you cut your lawn on a regular basis (before it gets a notice from the code enforcement folks), it will be very easy to cut with your reel mower.
Don't let it grow up so much and it will be much easier to cut. Reel mowers don't cut well if the blades of grass are too long. They mainly lay down and just pop back up later.
I bought a reel mower after my power mower broke down (again) last summer. The actual mowing takes longer, but at least it doesn't take me half an hour to get the darned thing started. Oddly ehough, I actually enjoy using the reel mower, its a pleasant activity in the evening, whereas using the other thing was just unpleasant and noisy (and dangerous - if one of those blades flew off...). I wouldn't like to try it on grass this long though - its important to keep on top of it.
Damn that grass is pretty high and that mower seems to be doing impresive job cutting it. My gas power mower would have stalled out cutting grass that high. I am thinking about getting one of these as I am getting tired of spending money on gas powered mowers that don't last. The guy at the end says he should have bought a weedeater. Trust me I wish I had never bought a weedeater they are absolute junk.
I will purchase one as well, to cut down on noise and polution. Its a good exercise though, the trick is not to allow your grass to grow too long, or it will be hard to cut like on this clip. I saw a lot on sale on EBay, and at good price too!!. If my grass gets ever that long, I will put the old red bucket back on duty.
after watching this I'll stick with my Gas mower. Gas isn't that expensive lol considering the fact you only need lest than half a quart to cut a yard
and what happens when(not if) the gas goes back up? You should also notice the heighth of the grass; the reel mower didn't clog once whereas a gas powered one would have.
what happens when the gas goes up? Well I guess my poor ass will have to spend 3 dollars instead 2 1/2 dollars to mow the grass.come on! it's a lawn mower not a gas guzzling suv! and the reel lawn mower didn't clog because he's cutting about 3 inchs of grass at a time. Even the guy in the video says "shoulda gotta weed eater" if you can afford an internet connection monthly payment you can afford 4 dollars a month for lawn mower fuel lol
I haven't used a power (gas) mower since the very early 70s. I mow with a Brill Luxus, but never let the grass get as tall as in this video. (It's obvious the couple just moved in, so the grass height is understandable.) A weedeater would have taken it down to manageable height. A bit more work, but doable.
@jason23296 Apparently, I have more land than you. It takes me about $15/week to mow my yard. While that's not a lot of money(per se), it's a damned inconvenience to have to pay $60/month just to keep my grass short. AND gallon for gallon, lawn mowers wastes more fuel than your gas guzzling suv. So what if the guy in the video thinks he should've gotten a weed eater? I know that I am capable of muscling through my yard. I don't care how out of shape you are, you ought to be able to...
@jason23296 ...muscle through yours if you only have to spend $4 a month for gas...hell...you ought to be able to go out with garden shears to cut your puny yard for that amount.
I just bought one from the thrift store - and old Scott model....my neighbor always had one and I loved the way it cut her grass....her husband wouldn't let me use it (she is very protective of her cutter) - my grass is a little bigger than the one in the video....I learned a long time ago that these mowers actually "cut" the grass as opposed to "ripping" it...that's why this is the style use on golf courses....check it out....
while yes it dose cut so do rotery mowers . Both will also rip if you do not have sharp blades. The real reason golf courses use reel mowers is to cut at hites as low as 1/16 inch no rotery can do that. Thay do use rotery in the rough but never on short grass
He seemed to be cutting wet grass, or the grass is too high, or his mower is set too low. All three conditions would make it very tiring to mow such a small piece of lawn. It would have been better to use only part of the length of the mower to cut only a small section of grass. Or, even better still, rake up some cut grass first, to cut down the resistance of the obstruction.
Actually, reel mowers are safe even over rocks and sticks... As for the product, I recently bought a 20in Scott and it's great but they are not intended for cutting grass higher than the blades.
I've found myself mowing more often because I don't have to deal with the noise and smell of a gas cutter.

I have a woman powered mower and I do not have to sharpen the blades. It is not meant to cut that high of grass but you can do it with a bit more effort. You should cut it every week so it doesn't get so high. It's not hard to push at all. My 2 year old can push it...it's just dangerous when she starts to chase you!
i sharpen these for a living, both these and the powered reels. first, they don't work too well on long grass because the bedknife bends it over and the reel wont cut it. you'd be better off borowing a rotary for the first time, and if you keep your push reel sharp and adjusted, it should be a peice of cake from then on..
remove the wheels, remove the pinion gears, pull out the little pawls, and reverse them, and switch the pinion gears, now the reel should turn when you push the mower backwards. with some lapping compound, found at most automotive stores, on the blades push the mower backwards for awhile on a surface like concrete.. the lapping compound will sharpen the blades.. the 2 sets of screws on either side above the bedknife adjust the contact.
I love the quality of the cut of the reel mower, the problem is that to get a motorized version of it, is very expensive compared to a motorized rotary mower.
If you want to be able to mow the grass in one swoop then you should get your speed up before hitting the grass. That way you will be able to keep the blade spinning when you are on the grass.
grass juicing?

in my experience reels are easier to push than gas mower because they are WAY lighter. You probably get more exercise from pushing a gas mower.

Just gotta make sure you don't let your lawn get too tall. And keep those blades and the cutting edge oiled.
