I agree, and feel these beautiful artworks of jesus helped personalize it for many early converts, making it easier for them to digest this radical's message of having good character and doing good wherever you go; (pretty radical compared to the human experience, which has been anything but civil).

Actually he was a Jew. Seen any people of Jewish descent lately? Not african at all. Nor was he "white" if by white you mean of caucasian or european descent. Rather, he came from Semetic roots (from David, remember??) and therefore probably resembled modern Middle Easterner. He looked more like Osama Bin Laden than anyone.
I am LDS and that is what I have been taught. Never have I been taught that Christ is white. Finally, there are many hymns from many sects found in the LDS hymnal.
