All that exists is contingent to something else. The origin of the matter in the universe needs to be explained by the matter creating abilities of a non-contingent power. This non contingent power needs to exist by it's own necessity. Energy is proven to be non-contingent. Therefore a form of energy must had created the universe. Energy has the same attributes we give God, therefore is plausible that God had created the universe.
Regarding the Inquisition being an embarrassment for the church, Christians blame the Inquisition on the European governments. In the days of the Spanish Inquisition, the church would arrest people, try them in secret, and then when they were found guilty they were "relaxed to the secular arm" to give the church cover, and although this supposedly meant that it was up to the government, everyone understood that this meant the person was to be executed by burning at the stake.

They are generalising. In South Africa, and other wealthy African countries (Africa is a big place, you know) the governments have zero tolerance for such fanatical religious fervour. In fact, in South Africa, we looked on with horror as proposition 8 (and other anti-gay, bigot legislation) was passed in the USA.

I disagree. Africa is only "conservative" thanks to colonialism. Much of its legislative inequality is simply the last vestige of French, Belgian, or (the worst) British empires. Remember, Apartheid was implemented by staunch Calvinistic and Lutheran interpretations of biblical texts. It was the ANC (mainly black African members) that included gay and lesbian rights in the very constitution of that nation. Tolerance is an African virtue that has since been corrupted.
That's ironic, considering that Sweden is one of the most atheistic nations on earth. This might serve as a warning to Christians who want theocracy here....be careful what you wish for. I agree, there are Christians who would not think twice about locking us away or killing us for not believing. Look at Congresswoman Michele Bachmann...was about ready to return the McCarthy era to us; from there, it's another small step to the inquisition.
There are plenty of atheists ive met who would love to do the same with christians and other theists. So if i were you i wouldn't generalise. And this from a deist.

And i'm a deist btw who has no loyalty to either side of the equation so why would i lie about something like that. The sooner atheists learn to accept that you have fundies along with your theist counterparts the sooner you'll do something about it as they give you atheists a really bad image to the rest of the world.
