Probably some type of no toxic chemical or natural smoke. The guy is not wearing protective gear, so it probably just irritates the rats to the point where they run out. You would run out too if they pumped your house full of burning wood smoke, to the point where you cant breathe.

yuckyuks - why are you worried? 1)your dog is having fun killing the rats because that's it's instinct. I know there are people who take their dogs next to the Hudson to "hunt" 2) you are providing a public service by keeping the rats from going into people's aparments.

It's instinct, Wheater Terriers catch field mice and rats (originally from Ireland) and instead of letting them bleed to death, they pick them up in their mouths and shake their heads like crazy, snapping the mouse's neck.

wow. we don't really have rats in the part of texas i live in. ocassionally you'll see a tiny mouse (like 3 inches and smaller-tail and all) dude that dog chased a rat and brought it back like he was playing fetch w/a ball!!

My doggie Spike is a mutt, but is predominantly Chihuahua and some kind of terrier, I call him a Chi-ter (pronounced "Cheater"). I also call him a Mexican Terrier, and everybody looks at me like, What the hell is a Mexican Terrier? lol He looks like a Chihuahua with a beard, and has a knack for catching (or trying to catch) anything that moves when I wal him outside. I had to pull out a half-chewed preying mantis from his mouth because he just seems to eat anything that moves.

I didn't know terriers were good at catching rats. I live on the Upper West Side of NYC and we have rats wherever there's garbage, particularly near construction sites. I've seen dogs run in terror from rats. I guess it depends on the dog breed.

Nice choice of dog with the Jack Russell. They were originally bread to do this exact job. They were used more for chasing foxes for food and fur though. VERY smart animal if you train it properly. I have one too and my next dog's gonna be a Jack xD

The smoke does not contain any toxins or poisons. It is about the same as being in a room with a chip pan fire. In a confined space the smoke would cause death. So the rat has two options bolt or die, either way the result is the same smoke or terrier.

I'll second that. My Jack uprooted a tree in my front yard once chasing a mole.

2 weeks later he sat down with a calm collective and watched 2 Pit Bulls behind a fence try to get through to him like it was nothing at all.

Oh, and he's been hit by 2 cars, survived Parvo and 4 years later still scares the hell out of the UPS man! God bless 'em!
