when you find them still alive on the trap, the humane thing to do is kill them quickly. i use a metal bar with a quick downward blow to the back of the head. unless you are trying to be cruel, there's no need to let them sit there and suffer.
@movitmovit You need an actual metal bar to kill a mouse? Are mice just really, really big where you live? ;-) For me, I've handled enough to know how to manipulate them directly with my hands, without risk of being bitten, so that on those occasions where I -do- need to kill something quickly, I just snap their necks. They don't feel a thing. ;-) Or if they're on the ground & not moving, I jump on them, full weight on my heel, on the rodent. 220#+ man vs 1/4 oz rodent - they feel no pain. ;-)
Re: mouse-jumping: 2 b clear, I only ever did that once. It was a young thing, looked like a mouse/chipmunk combo. It was sitting on the sidewalk having some sort of spasm, but not like a venomation spasm. It was sitting up, chewing its own fingers, vibrating and chittering and not moving a muscle even as I put my shoe on top of its head. I only did that to see if it was maybe just distracted so it could run. It didn't, kids were close - I jumped. Didn't want kids getting rabies or anything.
@ZachariasLePuertre as long as it's quick and as painless as possible, it's the least we can do for them.
are you saying that you snap their necks while they are stuck on a glue trap? it must be pretty scummy with all of that glue and feces everywhere. that's why i use the metal bar.
@movitmovit I know some glue traps are more like credit card plastic, but the ones I use (when I use them) are the paper kind. You can fold those in half around the critter and quickly end it without actually touching it or the glue. I guess if you don't use the flexible kind, anything will do that does it quickly. :-) I haven't had to use any for awhile, I wasn't thinking about the thicker ones that are more popular today.
Sirlordwhitman, glue traps are a cruel and disgusting way of trapping *any* animal. Use a friggin' snap trap, or more humane means of extermination. Why do you have to make it as painful as possible for the animal when you can kill it quickly instead, and reach the same conclusion? Catch and release works too, but not in your backyard - that's stupid. They don't have a mini GPS so they won't find their way back if you release them a km or so away from your home.
okay.. okay, I agree, the little furry runt shouldn't suffer. Nothing shouldn't suffer.
It just took me a while to get used to seeing shattered mouse skull on my floor from using a snap trap and having to clean up infected blood every now and then. Glue traps are cleaner.. but I don't use them anymore.
Ya know? I'm really not this barbaric, animal torturing fiend. I'm actually a decent fellow. But when I heard from the pest control guy how PEOPLE who were exposed to the hantivirus, died slow, painful deaths, I tend to feel more for the human suffering side of it than anything else. And for the record, I never invaded a mouse's nest and infected it with deadly poop.
Comical that some of these lame radical mouse rights activists loathe the use of these traps and then talk about killing the trap setter in the same breath. Let's see.. who's more liable to get stuck behind bars? The guy that caught the mouse with a trap acquired through legal means or the idiot who committed first degree murder by avenging the mouse? Dumb derelicts.
Difference is that they're not actually serious. Animal cruelty is a disgusting thing, these glue traps are awful... there is nothing wrong at all condemning them and preaching more humane methods of control. Christ's sake, we don't live in the dark ages anymore...
and to think you stupid idiots RECORDED IT ON VIDEO makes it worse. why did you do it? for your own pleasure? people like you make you sick - this sort of abuse should put you to jail, im going to report this to the ASPCA ive had enough. take this video down or youtube will! assholes!
I currently have that problem with mice. I'm trying to narrow it down to the kitchen cabinet (lower), and the air vents. From my experiences, usually when mice walk out into plain view slowly, it's usually an indication that they are starving and getting desperate to locate food. I guess when they are extremely hungry, they block out the things they fear the most, including humans.
I'm not questioning the killing of mice, I'm questioning the method. Glue traps are abhorrent. You often get left with a live, tormented creature wit ha dislodged eyeball or ripped skin. And tell me, do you throw the animal in the bin alive in that condition, or do you put it out of its misery first? That's my pet peeve here.
mr2donalson, have you checked for any holes around your home where they may be entering?
Also, to the litigious individual who made it necessary to point out that throwing out a mouse in the trash is illegal, remember that thousands of people in mr2donalson's situation will be doing the same exact thing. Can you stop them also? Thousands more mice will be born everyday, to invade many more homes, in the future.
that was at my old house... we cought prob 6 or so... started out by setting the traps right in front of those holes.... (inteior walls) and filling the exterior wall spots where we thought they might enter with "great stuff" tripple expanding foam... took a while but we got them all out... is whats sad is some of these mice had the courage to walk out into the open while we'd be watching TV and jump into our dogs food bowl in plain view of us...
Yes, but most people have the deceny to kill it rather than let it suffer. That is the point here. YOu shouldn't make osmething suffer when you can go for the quick kill. Period.
And it is actually illegal to throw live mice stuck on glue traps into the garbage. That constitutes torturous actitivty to animals. It is illegal to torture any verterbrate animal. You are supposed to KILL THEM ON THE TRAP, not let it starve to death. The fact that you would opt for the latter instead is disgusting and cruel. Too bad such things can't be enforced so easily.
So just because thosands of people leave the animal alive, suffering rather than being merciful, that makes it right to do so? Hardware stores and supermarkets are starting to take glue traps off their shelves. Honstely, they are torture devices and should not be legal. Use a snap trap or poison next time (far more painless).
Right. Mice reach sexual maturity at 30 days and have a litter of 6-12 babies. So if you have six mice running around the house.. do the math. Some have the potential of carrying the hantivirus - so that's another serious hazard right there.
Again Whitman, you are missing the point. Killing isn't the issue, the issue is when the means are very cruel. They still don't deserve an inhumane death when you can give them a quick one.
@Stinkuary Yeah, that just goes to show there are a lot of stupid heartless people out there. I don't care if "thousands of mice are born everyday", that's not the point. It's about not being a douchebag. Forcing an animal to starve to death on a trap is cruel and unnecessary.
Seeing one mouse with both its back legs ripped off as well as the lower half of its jaw in a glue trap, screaming its head off in pain, convinced me that there are better ways to rid them from my home.
Show a bit of compassion you dickheads. Mice are mammals and can also feel fear/pain. To make it suffer like that when you can go for the quick kill is wrong. I have a question: if you had a choice to kill it quickly or make it suffer, which would you choose?
This says more about the mind of the person than it does the mind of the mice. If you're condoning needless cruelty, then you are a sick fuck. End of story.
That was my wife posting... think I just tossed that one in the trash... the one before I wasted another trap on, pushing its face into the trap which suffocated it...
If I had a snake they'd have been snake food... now go take your liberal BS somewhere else... and yes I vote YES for the death penalty also ;-)
It is actually illegal to throw them in a trash alive because it constitutes torturous activity to animals. You're supposed to kill them on these traps, not leave them alive out of cruelty. If I was you I'd take this video down.
Just because it is necessary to exterminate vermin does not mean you have to do it in a cruel way. Mice can be a problem I admit, but letting them starve to death on glue traps without killing them, just because "you don't care if they suffer" seems to me sadistic.
Is it the mouse's fault? It doesn't know it is annoying. You are an asshole. It is people like you that are the reason for animal cruelty in this world bitch.
I have an idea. Every time we catch one with the glue trap, we'll let it free in someone's backyard who loves mice. Give it a week. After they experienced the intrusive invasion which includes having to clean up toxic mouse excrement and urine, and repairing chewed on electrical wires, they'll end up being more tortuous to these 'cuddly things' than we ever will. Just watch.
The point here is to kill them humanely, not to let them linger on these traps and starve to death. It is not right to torture any animal, regardless of status.

Considering glue traps make them mutilate themselves where they excrete every dropping they have due to the fear - glue traps are not cleaner.
