Usually we think of Hypocrisy as akin to lying, but it can be an automatic response and as you've pointed out, Alkistis, not always detremental or wrong.
I tend to think benign hypocrisy is more indicative of a purality inherent in social interaction. If it is abused, however, that can be detrimental. I try to be careful of that.
Groovy is spot on. Whenever you engage someone you've automatically added like 6 new perspectives on your gestalt. Who you are, who they are, who you think they are, who they think you are, who you think they think you are and who they think you think they are... it's pretty fascinating.
So I tried hard to think of when I'm truly and fully myself... and came to realize that it's only when I'm alone. It's not that I'm fake with everybody in my life, but there's a teeny bit of an act I put on, depending on who I'm with... I'm not too sure how to take that....
I've always wanted to play the 'role' of the boy toy to a powerful, brassy female boss who not only humiliates me in public but also erotically teases me by fanny slapping. (Ah......what bliss)
Pt 2 One thing I learned from this was that we can find ourselves having aversions to people who are not aware of their hypocrisy, however when we see the hypocrisy in ourselves it may teach us to become a little more forgiving of others. Shedding light on this subject may cause us to hide from the reflection we see of ourselves. The light is appreciated even if a little bright ! Love to you Alkistis, you truly are a light of wisdom in a dark world.
Hypocrisy is a wonderful learning tool especially when we become aware of it in ourselves, it can be shocking and humbling changing our entire world perspective. For example a woman devised a computer programme where Pt's had to press 1 of two buttons quickly in response to people of different ethnic identities (button 1=negative 2=positive). Her experiment revealed much prejudice in the culture she lived in, however when she took the test, she was also found to be prejudice.
It always bothered me to wear a (first) name tag when I was waitressing years ago. For a while I actually wore a name tag with a different first name on it so the customers could get my attention without making me feel they had a handle on me.
That was years ago. If I took a name tag type job now I think I would ask the manager to give me a tag with "Mrs. J." on it.
The only thing I'd like to add is that it's extremely difficult to be authentic, at least I find it to be. Michael Tsarion made an interesting point that in our society everything is borrowed. Our clothes are borrowed, our thoughts are borrowed, our language is borrowed, our views are borrowed. I mean, how can we truly be authentic?
Excellent points. However, the minute one becomes aware of ones participation in the "theater", doesn't that automatically create a fork in the road? perhaps the road less traveled would also be the more difficult. My observation is that the temptation to fall back in "theater" mode is far greater than one's ability to keep recognizing one's own hypocrisy and channeling such recognition towards a constructive end.
I find that politicians are the worst hypocrites and the biggest criminals...that's why I vote for the abolition of gov't.

I think your right Alkistis...being aware of when you are acting is necessary to find your true self.
