Jamaican LGBT rights activist Maurice Tomlinson is the first recipient of the David Kato Vision & Voice Award. This award is named after David Kato, a gay Ugandan rights activist who was murdered for his sexual orientation a year ago.
Maurice Tomlinson is in London now and received the David Kato award there yesterday.
On 01/31/12 Tomlinson will take part in a discussion at the House of Commons led by three leading figures from the LGBT rights movement in Africa, the Caribbean and Asia.

I have learned that another Jamaican LGBT rights activist has had to flee Jamaica for his own safety.
In August 2011, activist Maurice Tomlinson married his Canadian partner at a ceremony in Toronto.
They kept this event quiet out of safety concerns, but recent media reports in Jamaica meant that Tomlinson's life could not be guaranteed and police warned him they could not offer him any security from vigilantes if he remained in Jamaica.

Actually when the huge controversy over "Boom Bye Bye" erupted in 1992, a statement was issued. When Buju went back to Jamaica he got into big trouble with his fans who thought he apologized. He got death threats. One writer said that he "nearly lost his life."
Buju denied making any apology and claimed that the statement was issued by his record company.
