  • whats the name of the song after Surf Wax America??

  • @jesusofsuburbia44 Nevermind, i just saw the end of the vid!! :D

  • It is of note that Brian Wilson almost always co-wrote (including the whole of Pet Sounds), Rivers wrote Pinkerton completely by himself. Saying that both are superb.

  • @harrisonhedges Also the Beach Boys didn't even play the instruments on the Pet Sounds album, just leant their voices.

  • They have similarities in the same way that Yao Ming and Weird Al Yankovic do

  • I would never compare the two the person who made this knows nothing about music, its like i hear the beach boys songs then it plays a weezer song? like theres any similarity , the music of the beach boys is way more complex than a garage band from the 90s thats first album was good and everything after sucked

  • Rivers WAS the next B. Wilson. The Blue Album is enjoyable on the same level as The Beach Boys early naive songs, such as "I Get Around" and "Fun, Fun, Fun". True, early Beach Boys were only seemingly simple with really complicated textures underneath. Weezer songs never were, but they didn't have to be. Blue Album/Pinkerton-Weezer were the perfect match up of Beach Boys and Ramones. I'd even go as far as saying the B.Boys have never made an album that I enjoy so much as a whole as I love Blue.

  • @busenlilly1 However, unfortunately Rivers isn't the songwriter he used to be anymore. And he never wrote anything that equals songs like "God Only Knows" and "Warmth Of The Sun".

  • rivers A. did not sell more albums then the beach boys, you are wrong about that. im sorry you dont know much about music, brain wilson is a genius. his arrangements and talent exceeds rivers by a solar system, go listen to weezer and be happy , ignorance is bliss

  • weezer should NEVER be uttered in the same semblance of words as the beach boys

  • Continuing on:

Both had mental breakdowns after they released/almost released their most emotional works. Obviously, Rivers came back to us but I think everyone can agree that everything from them since has never been quite like Pinkerton and Blue.

Wilson went on to fuck up his voice and fuck up his life whereas Rivers kinda kept his head and most importantly, his voice.

However, Wilson retreated completely from the Beach Boys whereas Rivers didn't and still remained the songwriter.

  • The biggest similarity between them is they both started off as great pop songwriters then went on to try to branch off and neither was well received but went on to gain a cult status and proper recognition. Obviously Pet Sounds is a far more advanced piece of music than Pinkerton but Pinkerton is nothing to scoff at.

The other massive similarity is both have/had much sought after unreleased albums: Smile vs. Songs From The Black Hole and both were created in the bands' prime.

  • This is fucking stupid dude. I noticed the similarities between Cuomo and Wilson and when I saw this video, I thought you were getting at something too.

But all you did was basically point out how they occasionally could look the same or similarities with everything...but THE MUSIC.

  • It's no coincidence - it's called influence.

Just buy Rivers' Alone albums and read the inlay cards.

Still it's nice to see the two side by side like this.

  • what does that mean "could rivers HAVE been..." he IS the next brian wilson.

both write (relatively) uncomplicated pop songs with beautiful vocal harmonies and melodies.

trying to argue that they look the same is simply sophomoric.

  • dude dont ever compare brain wilson to rivers como or whatever the heck that losers name is. weezer is lame, everyone who actual plays more than 1 instrument seriously and doesnt suck balls will tell you the same. brain wilson was said to be one of the greatest composers of the 20th centery by Leonard Bernstein, i know for a fact that was not said about rivers, im sorry, all thse weezr songs on here have nothing to do with the beach boys

  • @Brainkid88

personally, i argue that cuomo is more prolific... he's sold more albums, made more money, and achieved equal international stardom.

  • According to Billboard, in terms of singles and album sales, The Beach Boys are the No. 1-selling American band of all time, look it up, for your own good

  • big fan of both bands, but i must say i do see some similarities, although weezer is better... Come On beach boys fans thumbs down me!

  • You really asked for it! Sorry though... Beach Boys and Weezer are different. However "Pet Sounds" is a Masterpiece like "Sgt Pepper's". Pinkerton is not.

Come on Weezer fans !!! Hit back!

  • all the Weezer fans looked at the title of this video and went "I'm not wasting my time with this shit, I'm going to go bitch about every album after Pinkerton on some random prep's video."

  • Shit, I was on my brother's account when i said that, my bad.

  • Lol, daily.

  • There are a couple fucking idiotic comments here. No one in their right mind could say that the Beach Boys music wasn't complex, and anyone that says the Beatles were better is just about as illiterate as can be.

  • Fuck the Beatles....they may be better than the surf songs of the Beach boys but they cannot stand up to Brian Wilsons PET SOUNDS or SMiLE

  • I wouldn't say "fuck" the Beatles..... They were an amazing band in their own right. Perhaps the best. Lennon and McCartney were the British genius songwriters.

Brian Wilson is the greatest American composer and songwriter, hands down. Pet Sounds and Smile, I agree though, are the best albums of all time.

  • thank you!!! you are talking sence!!

  • I've always figured that Rivers and Weezer as a whole were totally influenced by the beach boys.

  • River's has stated that the Beach Boys are one of his fav bands.

  • In response to the title... no way in hell!!

  • im still pissed.........fucking teabags

  • You have got to be joking. Brian cannot be compared with anyone, No one comes even close.

  • This is kind of retarded. Just because you found some pictures that look the same doesn't mean anything. And why did you say "COULD" have been the next Beach Boys? They are still together.

  • the beatles SUCK compared to Brian Wilson you piece of shit.....even lennon's own son thinks so...get your facts straight dumbass

  • I don't care much for either, but the Beatles were far better than the Beach Boys.

  • Lennon/McCartney kills Brian Wilson.

  • Lennon/McCartney kills ANYONE. ANYONE. I challenge ANYONE to reply to this with a better songwriting duo.

  • McCartney/Lennon?

  • Touche.

  • stupid

  • rivers is a great songwriter!!may not be in the same league as brian but theres main stream artists who aint in the same league as river's!!

  • @prodigylover its not even funny and people who LOVE GOOD MUSIC are insulted by the thought of comparing a band that the beatles were influenced by to ....weezer

  • I'll say this once and once only...don't ever try to compare Brian Wilson to ANYONE.

  • we should be greatful that these 2 amazing bands exist and we get to enjoy the music i enjoyed listening to all of this. we dont just play our favoutite band over and over weezer can mean a lot more to some people.

  • Rivers Cuomo couldn't hold Brian's jock.

  • no cause he would break it

  • This is ridiculous. Comparing these two artists is like comparing a tsunami (Wilson) to a FisherPrice swimming pool (Cuomo).

  • go fuck yourself douche bad

  • what is a "douche bad"?

  • A feminine hygiene product that intentionally causes yeast infections.

  • In John Luerssen's book, "River's Edge", the author writes of Cuomo's admiration/obsession with Brian Wilson. Both artists are eccentric, introverted, and gifted. But why not explore such comparisons with other artists like Beethoven, or Marc Bolan, or others who also displayed odd traits? I'd say that the Ramones probably best compare to The Beach Boys' catchy tunes, vocal harmonies, and stylistic cohesiveness.

  • very true...

  • Not anymore

  • I think weezer probably started out a SPEBSQSA quartet or may have been a part of SPEBSQSA before doing rock, as in their DVD they sing a barbershop song together while walking the hills of hollywood..

  • Most of the 'similarities' are actually carefully chosen photographs, 'ahh gotcha, Rivers and Brian both sporting beards!', the musical similarities are at best a coincidence and at worst a flimsy attempt to marry aesthetic, tonal and lyrical indifferences whilst choosing to ignore the larger canon of work produced by The Beach Boys. The only real similarity for me lies in both =W= & BB's infusion of surf culture into there lyrical content and visual image. More to the point, who gives a f**k

  • Oh yeah, sure ...in your dreams. Fact is, no one will be singing Weezer songs 40 years from now - but they will STILL be singing Beach Boy songs.

  • "And Both Albums End With Slow Songs..." Give me a break. I am the biggest =w= fan in the world, and Rivers is pretty awesome, but there is no current weezer work that compares to Pet Sounds. If amything, this video makes weezer sound like a bunch of chops.

  • okay, wtf did i just watch, yes there are some minor similarities, but same could be said about a million diff. bands

  • Radiohead=next beatles

    Weezer=next beach boys

    Nirvana=next led zeppelin?

    i dont know

  • okay If they are the beach boys

there must be Rolling Stones of the 90s.

Are you telling me NiRvana Is the new beatles or something?

  • don't forget KISS and DEVO, those really shine through =W= too!

  • nice thesis, I enjoyed that I love both bands

  • The similarity is cool. But the Beach Boys put out way more albums; a few every year it seemed. These days, not uncommon to see a band slack off for a few years before the next album..

  • I don't believe the creator of this video is trying to say that Weezer is as brilliant as the beach boys. They're very remotely similar, but at the same time I don't think any other bands of that period could vie for the title of "The Beach Boys of Today." As for all the Weezer bashing, it's hard to compare the two given that Weezer's hardly trying to be Beach Boys #2. Nirvana and the Pixies have clearly been influences, not to mention that over 30 years pop music changed a fair bit

  • comparing these bands because one of their records both "start with the letter P and have 9 letters" is ridiculous...

  • er, don't think so!

  • There's more in the beach boys than Pet Sounds dude... songs like : Surf's up, Heroes and Vilains, Let the wind blow, Darlin'... Pet sounds is Awsome and the greatest album (equal to Sgt. Peppers) but there's more of the beach boys than this !!!

  • I like both bands, but how can you even compare both? Brian Wilson's compositions are so unique, while Rivers wrote simple, yet catchy songs. Weezer doesn't match the influence and creativity that the Beach Boys and Wilson had on the music community, not only musicians, but also music scholars. Wilson's music is analysized and is praised by musicians and scholars alike. Weezer's music? No way. Just a simple I - IV - V - IV - I. The comparison doesn't work.

  • I totaly agree ! Plus, it's two different generation. It's like comparisons with Oasis and the Beatles... Brian had a more tallent as a composer and used a lot more of musicians in the studio! Cuomo is an awsome Pop rocker and Composer, Brian was making pop music on another level than pop in his years... Not a close comparison, but I like both bands...

  • right...........ehr bud?????

  • I love both

    but this video is bullshit

  • Showing similarities isnt a good thing. Their vocal harmonies are fairly similar in parts but thats mainly buddy holly

  • I think if you cut that down to maybe 3 minutes, you'd have a convincing argument...a lot of the songs you used from Weezer are a lot louder that Beach Boys songs. That said, the Across the Sun intro and the Still Believe in Me intro comparison is great musically...Caroline No and Butterfly are somewhat similar too in terms of the alienation from the rest of the album.

  • Other considerations though. Guns N Roses the next Led Zeppelin? The Feeling/Oasis - The Next Beatles? But I suppose who cares about the next of anything. There should be more focus on the new than the next. But most new music and bands are bollocks these days.

  • NO NO NO! First off the differences are Brian Wilson COULD sing. Rivers can't sing a note. It's too forced. Second Beach Boys music is complex. Weezer is Simplistic. Third Off Weezer use distortion. The Beach Boys - Piano etc. Fourth off Most of the Beach Boys were related and harmonised with each other. Don't get me wrong 'Say it Aint So' is a classic. I do like weezer but not as great as The Beach Boys.

  • Really, I wouldn't call the Beach Boys' music complex. It was simple pop music for the most part.

  • Ha. Have you never heard Pet Sounds?

  • Never the whole album, but from what I've heard off of it, there was nothing complex. I'm not saying that Wilson was a bad song writers, I'm just saying he didn't write complex music.

  • haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • the question is... who are you to say that?

  • You are en enormously large, uninformed ass. Go fuck yourself...you tool.

  • These are my favorites bands, can be that another similarity?. Different years, but same passion for the music. Another similarity?. Thanx x the video.

  • the only similarity i see is that they are generally good clean cut people unlike most bands

  • I don't really catch the similaritys, i mean... i wouldn't be surprised to see an other band having similaritis to other,...no big deal bout making a video...useless

  • God Only Knows says it all, hands down The Beach Boys win by far.

  • you cant compare the 2

  • WHat? areyou kidding? Weezer has been one of the biggest bands in the world for over 10 years. They are poppy like the Beach Boys but Rivers Cuomo is a good songwriter. I like the Beach Boys and I respect them but give Weezer time, the Beach Boys have a 40 year head start.

  • Yeah Weezer is pretty much the same...except for the whole talent thing....oh, and the music. Everyone will remember The Beach Boys, and they created one of the top 5 albums unquestionably. Weezer, on the other hand, was just an average band that had their 10 minutes of fame. They didnt exactly shake up the music scene or anything.

  • There are zero comparisons between the two of these bands. zero, fuck.

  • are you fucking kidding? what the fuck kind of world do you live in man? fuck.

  • Congratulations, you've succesfully proven what so many of us already knew: The only way to be relevant today is to rip off and recycle the 1960's. What a remarkable coincidence.

  • i really dig this. good job!

    xXx

  • The Beach Boys are far and away better. Simple

  • Nice Video, I really enjoyed it.

  • Nice vid, really enjoyed it.

  • Is there any point to this? I like both bands but this is just tedious. (Though I'd take the Beach Boys by a country mile here)

Anyone paying attention knows that Rivers is a huge Beach Boys fan. Big deal. It doesn't necessitate this inane 9 minute pictorial comparison and the trotting out of stupid coincidences between Pinkerton & Pet Sounds. It doesn't make the Artist or their work any more mystical or genius.

  • Very interesting, but how can you not talk about the comparison between "Smile" and "Songs from the Black Hole"?

  • weezers better because they sound fresher

  • About time. I have been thinking the same thing since about 1996. ALL HAIL the =W=!

  • Weezer has been influence by The Beach Boys just like Oasis has been influenced by The Beatles. It is a compliment to both those great bands.

  • um, right... dont smoke crack, kids!

  • sorry folks....i like weezer....but FUCK WEEZER on this one....they come NO WHERE close to the Beach Boys/brian wilson...i'm a die hard Brian wilson fan...and you know what? NOT EVEN CLOSE. don't insult us please.

  • i love both weezer and the beach boys. But im a die hard =w= fan, Rivers is an amazing artist!

  • Weezer will never EVER come even close to the greatness of the beach boys...This video is slander.

  • You have a point there but I don't think that it's coincidence. I think its how Rivers thought Weezer should be like. He has mentioned the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson as his influences. I guess that's how he envisioned how a band should be like (consciously or unconsciously) so that's how he engineered his own band. That's why there are similarities to their sounds, lyrics and even their imagery.

  • good job. but nah.

  • iam 50 years old and a beach boy fan and i love weezer i think i need help!

  • I think it's obvious they have similarities. But I think most of what you point out is a little too weak to support anything other than the obvious fact that the two bands are similar in the fact that they do a song about surfing and a song about being in comfortable place "In The Garage." Big deal.

  • umm...no

  • Weezer was certainly influenced by the Boys, but you ignore the Pixies and several metal band's effects on their sound.

  • Think not.

  • You are cracked. The only thing your web site proves is that Wison should be recieving some royalty checks from Rivers Cuomo.

Remember The beach boys were the Beatles favorite band. Weezer is very similar to Weavle. A type of beatle. huh..huh..huh..?
