I've enjoyed reading Tarnas, but I was just thinking about how his view of history is fairly conventional. The Arabs didn't merely preserve Greek culture but built upon it. When Rome was sacked by Barbarians, both Rome and the Barbarians had been Christianized. It was Christians sacking Christians while pagan learning suffered. Also, his portrayal of early Christianity leaves out a lot of important details such as Gnosticism and the incorporating of pagan thought and mythology.
