  • I am seriously bored. It's still playing. You need and editor. Jeebus.

  • "You need and editor." lol

  • @oregone Yes, I see the hilariousness. Thanks.

  • @dfugger2 I'll be the first to admit the above video is quite boring. In my defense, I think I was just learning MS Moviemaker.

  • @oregone No worries. I had just unsubscribed from the yellow pages delivery and was feeling all self-righteous and drunk. It's way better than any video that I've never posted!

  • Yes, I see the hilariousness. My bad. Still...

  • just because you think so does not make it a waste. keep your one sided opinion to yourself. books don;t take time to boot, they don't crash, or get viruses. it's not your money so it's not a waste untill people who pay for them deem so, which goes back to the fact that people use them.

  • I see the citizens of Portland have elected you to be their spokesperson? Has it ever occurred to you that some seniors do not have internet, don't intend to get it and are perfectly fine with using their phone book? The PUC mandates that books are sent out to every house with a phone. Additionally, most small businesses that cannot afford a webpage or TV advertising use the yellow pages as their primary source of advertising. Basically, you littered and took up bandwidth for no reason.

  • @smcgov, are you sure that yellow pages delivery is required by law?

It seems like you're making quite a few assumptions about the state of the books at oregone's property that don't jive with the backstory he included in the video's description.

  • I am sure someone will say this is not true. But, it is. I live in Boston - right in the center of the city. I came home this morning from the gym and had 12 newly delivered phone books on my steps. We have 1 phone line. My neighbors had either 6 or 12 on their steps as well. I do like a phone book in the house but, this is obviously wasteful. Could not reach someone at Verizon who could help. So, as it is Tuesday they went in the recycling bin. There has to be a better way.

  • theh advertisers who pay for those books do not think it's wastefull and neither does anyone else inthe process whom it helps their own bottom line and puts food on their table

  • Some of us like using the effective & quickest way to find some one to help me out. My dog was hit by the car and I ran back into the house knowing exactly where my phone book was I look a the vet section and find a vet that said he does week emergencies. So with in 5 minutes i was in his office and he operated with in ten minutes saving my dogs life. He said if i did not get my dog there so quick he would have died died

  • @Fleckinstien, you sound like the type of person who would have picked up a set of books during the time they were dropped off and before oregone eventually cleaned up the remaining litter.

If Idearc had an opt-in policy, only those who wanted yellow pages, like yourself, would receive them, which would make oregone's life better without hurting yours at all. What a great solution to this problem.

  • me to

  • So you went around and stole a whole bunch of phone books in your area, Then brought them back to the people who sent them out? Really? How much time do you have on your hands to be able to do that? Just wondering if you knew that if Verizon was the main Phone Company in the area, then They are REQUIRED by law to send them out to all the households.

It might have been funny if you actually went in the building, but you dumped them out and ran!

  • Actually, they are not required by law to deliver them. I don't know where you got that idea. Also, all of those phone books were from my front porch; I didn't steal them from my "area."

To answer your other question, I don't have a lot of time on my hands, but I will take time from my schedule to send a message--albeit perhaps a relatively futile one--that citizens of Portland, Oregon feel that paper phone books are a waste of resources, and that their porch-spamming policy is unwelcome.

  • If the Main Local Phone Company is Verizon then they are Required by law to deliver them. If it isn't, then it is purely an advertising medium.

It is VERY VERY Hard to believe that they delivered all those books to your doorstep. If that did happen, then I could understand you being upset, but again, its really hard to believe.

  • Your hatred of the Paper Directories are fine. But statistics do show that MANY Americans still use them! Just because you know 20, 30, 100 people that don't use the book, doesn't mean the other 230,000 in that vicinity doesn't. But that's a whole different story. I am in the Advertising business myself, Business Owners do not continually purchase advertising that doesn't relinquish results. Wouldn't You agree?

  • It's more than 20, 30, or 100. In fact, Portland City Commissioner Saltzman is working on an "opt-out" option for residents. As there are five different companies delivering phone books each year, clearly that is more than anyone needs. Personally, I haven't used a phone book since 2003, and that was for an (unsuccessful) attempt to rip in half to impress girls.

  • HAHAHA!!! Well sir, I am glad that you at least attempted to use one.

  • By opting out of receiving the phone book, you will be doing a disservice to all the local businesses in the area who rely heavily on getting business from the Yellow Pages.

  • They are required by law. The local phone company must send out a directory as a public service. They get no funding for this at all. Many people use the Yellow Pages, my self included. They get funding by selling advertising in the book. They also have coupons in there, not to mention great deals in the advertisment. We should all be looking in our YP.

  • @eddieramano6, are yellow pages required by law or just white pages? As I understand it, phone book companies are fighting to overturn laws regarding the delivery of white pages since they are the only ones required. They've successfully done thing in Cincinnati, for example. Yet they continue to spam print yellow pages.

  • Actually, the Public Utilities Commission requires the local telephone company to deliver the Phone Books. So, in essence, it IS the law.

And the end of this video clearly shows the directories being delivered to a multi-dwelling/multi-business address. So, it really doesn't seem to be 'over delivering'.

  • @Sueski2, many cities have legacy laws requiring delivery of white pages. I don't know of any that require the delivery of advertisements. Do you?

  • i thought it was a freakin brilliant idea, and i might be following suit, baaaaaaaa, baaaaaaaa...

  • I feel violated for sitting through this whole piece of crap.
