  • Thank You! You're awesome!

  • First time seeing this guy or any of his videos, and I absolutely agree and stand behind his statements. I have been lifting for 9 years, BS in Exercise Science, and BS in Biology. He is 100% correct. Very good show. My hat off to you good Sir.

  • Lee great video. Question. I wake up at 7am. Drop the kids off at school then hit the gym at around 9am. You mentioned that we should consume our protein drink first thing in the morning and then after our workout. Should I drink a shake after my workout even if I've just drank one 2-3 hours earlier?

  • @greatgraylen

Yes, I often have a shake before and after training.

  • Whey Protein makes my stomach seriously hurt. I'm not lactose intollerant and I have used many brands, they all do the same. What alternative type of protein would you suggest that is easier on the stomach?

  • @poopcanoop

There are other kinds of protein powders available, milk, egg, casein, vegetable, rice, etc. you can try a different kind of protein powder and see if it effects you differently than whey. Just get a small container and test it out.

  • Hi Lee, I want some advice. I took all day BSN NITRIX and SYNTHA 6. after i change the protein. i took Optimum nutrition 100% whey gold. But i feel this is not original. not dissolve well.tastes like water. how do know the original and duplicate.I live in Italy. product do not come directly from America. • Should one worry about the sweeteners that are in flavoured protein supplements? Particularly when it comes to aspartame?

  • @77777random

I personally don't have a problem with it, but if you are allergic to aspartame than you can get protein supplements without aspartame, just read the label information.

  • @leemhayward I first saw this when it came out and now i'm looking around for protein to take. I've tried soy protein and i was gaining about 5-10lbs each week. Then i heard how it produces estrogen and being a guy i stopped it. Do you think that's true about how it produces estrogen? I'm thinking about taking it again since it gave me some nice size.

  • @imvincenzo10

Yeah, I think there is some truth to the whole soy / estrogen thing. I purposely avoid eating any soy based foods and supplements because of this. Stick to whey protein powder. It's generally cheaper and tastes a lot better then soy protein... Not to mention it's higher quality.

  • @leemhayward Thank you for clearing that up.

  • i am currently drinking "Modern BCAA by USP Labs", do i still drink my Whey Protein Isolate drink? i get confused because i thought BCAAs were protein. Do i drink both?

  • @laubeatz

BCAA's are best taking during your workouts because they are very quickly absorbed. But for the rest of the day you can use protein powder.

  • @leemhayward thank you lee, understood!

  • Hey Lee, Im 15 years old and i workout about 6 times a week. I used to take creatine monohydrate but then stopped because i have heard of the bad effects it can have on your body. I am about to start using it again and i was wondering what other supplements should i be taking besides whey and creatine? Also is there a energy pill that you recomend because i find myself tired during the workouts, but i dont want the pill to cause me to be jittery. Thanks

  • Question about the "Best time to have a protein drink:"

I go to the gym in the morning about an hour after I first wake up. Should I have a protein shake both before and after I work out? I had heard it is best to not eat anything a few hours prior to working out.

Also, if you have a Costco in your area, you can get 5lbs of Whey Protein for around $30 :)

  • would 72 grams of whey protein be too much after a work out? if so how much protein would you recommend after a intense workout?

  • @mrlatino187 your body can only process about 40 grams of protein effectively at one time. anything more just comes out your other end.

  • very eloquent, very true, very cool ...

  • i have gaspari real mass weight gain, when should i take?

  • @sdstan

Right after your workouts is a good time to have a shake. And any other time during the day when you can't get in a solid food meal would be an ideal time to have a shake as well.

  • due to my sometimes hectic work schedule can i use protein INSTEAD of breakfast? or should i throw some egg whites in there or something of the sort

  • @sleep1ngdrag0n

Yes, you can have a shake in place of a meal when you are in a hurry.

  • Heavy Metal ftw! xD

  • hey lee good job man!!!! wanna know about optimum nutrition HYDRO WHEY...

is it equivalent to ON's regular whey protien ...or not....plz help me out...

  • @sumedh126787

It's all good, you really aren't going to notice any major difference if you took the same amount of regular whey or hydro whey. I know some people will disagree, but whey is whey it all works.

  • @sumedh126787

It's pretty much the same thing, hydro is just digested a little faster.

  • Hey Lee.... "Because most protein powders tested safe even when consumed in very high doses"... I missed that copy of Consumer Reports... how high was the "high dose"? Did they mention the number of servings a day?

  • @gruntdesann

3 protein shakes per day was considered "High Doses".

  • @leemhayward hey lee good job man!!!! wanna know about optimum nutrition HYDRO WHEY...

is it equivalent to ON's regular whey protien ...or not....plz help me out...

  • I bought the 100% whey in costco from muscle milk is just 29.99$ for 6lb and it taste great

  • @lapalomacago

I get protein from costco all the time, you can't beat the price!

  • @lapalomacago I do too, eve add egg to it? if so hows that going for you?

  • Hey Lee, im thinking about buying A-1 creatine any suggestions?

  • You are awesome!! i been looking for this kind of videos..

  • Do you want to talk about Acesulfame potassium (sweetner) in protein powder...

  • What about arfificial sweetner(Acesulfame potassium) in protein powder ...??? sweet poision ha!

  • Thanks again Lee. I always thought that the GNC Protien powder was a poor powder since the rice is like around $25.00. I have spent $60, $80 dollors on protien powers, but since you say it is all the same I'll just go for the cheap GNC powder. Thanks Lee. You and your videos are saving me alot of MONEY

  • i'm 17 , it usually says you need to be 18, will i be ok

  • @steelalx

Generally the whole being 18 thing is a legal thing to save their butts. But from a real world perspective you can take protein powder at 17 years old and even younger. Heck, even baby formulas these days are made with whey protein these days.

  • @leemhayward ahh thankyou, your excellent advice is much appreciated. I had trouble convicing my parents that protien powder does not kill my insides lol

  • Lee, what is your take on "all in one" supplements?

  • I use GNC Aplified X and it works, taste very good too!

  • eggs are cheap

  • Is waking up in the middle of the night to consume a protein shake a good idea? I have heard of some people who do this....

  • Thanks. Now I can enjoy my protein shake at ease. It really tastes good in the morning and after a hard morning run!

  • amc mass xxx max performance?

  • Hey lee to gain some more muscle should i take GNC mass XXX or gold standard whey protein? My friend said that i should take GNC if i want to gain some mass on me

  • how do you feel about animal pak and animal cuts supplement?

  • Question for you lee. When using whey protein do you use water or milk and what would you recommend? If you could get back to on this would greatly appreciate it, and thanks for posting this video up

  • @christurkthebrave, I'd highly suggest extremely discount brands since they might contain a lot more sugars which aren't good. So pricing really varies. Make sure you do your research and Read The Nutrition Labels!!!

  • FAT BURNERS!!!!! confused when it comes to those

  • Hi Lee. What's your opinion on Soy Protein products? I know a stigma of not being as good as whey, and even being a "feminine" product. I've been reading up on it and seems though people are saying now is that soy is on-par if not slightly better than whey.

  • Hey Lee here are some supplements that I use off and on, and you may want to mention in your series.

Beta-alanine, bcaa, casein, creatine, fish oil (or flax oil), glutamine, multi-vitamins, nitric oxide, waxy maize, and whey, which you have here.

  • Hey Lee, great videos, very informative. Im 22 years old now and after using whey protein shakes in addition to a healthy diet, and rigorous training routine, i've seen results. I'm 178lbs and floating around the 10% bodyfat range. Gaining the additional strength and size requires at the very least some extra or consistent protein in the diet, im around 250g per day. Shakes are never a bad choice [in a balanced diet]. Keeping protein flowing delivers BCAA's whenever they are needed, 2recover

  • Top notch!

  • Excellent video Lee, maybe you can talk about testosterone boosters and estrogen blockers, as far as who needs them when they're important and what kind are just total garbage.

  • Lee, a video on CHEAT MEALS would be really usefull

  • IN YOUR NEXT VIDEO, can you cover any heart healthy and un healthy supplements.

  • I've been hearing more and more about casein protein. What exactly is it and the benefit of adding casein to a supplement regime?

  • I'm doing the blast your bench workout. Just got done with week 1. Because of back issues (im 40 lol) I substituted light hi rep deadlifts for squats, IMO is just as intense and I can use lighter weights. I been drinking protein powder by the bucket and doing well. I'll look into your other programs, etc when I get done with this workout. In other words.....im really enjoying the weekend off.

  • hey lee, ive been getting your e-mails for a while now and im only 16, but i am trying out for the army and i want to bulk up, im currently working out in the gym and have niticed some size increase in the past month, but i feel like im still a bit too skinny, should i buy some protien to bulk up? also i could be in the army in a month

  • Hi Lee I have been watching your videos and get a lot out of them. I can only work out first thing in the AM. I get up at 4 AM and warming up at 4:30, Working out at 5 and done at 6 AM. So is 35g of whey protein when I first get up and and 50g (2 hrs after the 1st ) after the workout the best thing for me ? The only other product I use at this time is Creatine after my workout. Always open to suggestions, Thanks

  • Awesome job to say the least, Lee. I'm continually impressed by your knowledge, effortless research to get to the jist of the issue and your great public speaking abilities. Have you thought of becoming a reporter?

  • whats your advice on Creatine? i started taking one brand for about a month and got no results. even with loading for the first week. i then took a more concentrated monohydrate but got extreme headaches. i had friends that were boxers and said it was great to use but i didn't see that at all.

  • nice video lee.its extremely useful...

am from india, will i get quality supplements as yours..

  • hey lee nice video. one question i found a protein powder at costco that is from the makers of musclemilk and its a blend of different proteins. 80 servings for $30 do you think i would get better performance out of that or pure whey protein

  • im hope LEE HAYWARD comes up with the part 2. Because been waiting for few days now. and this part 1 for me personaly was just OLD NEWS

  • great video!!!!

  • Typo mistake, I meant fine substitute.

  • Nice vid man, but I have to disagree with you on the quality of whey protein products. I prefer to use the Body Fortress Brand which provides 26 g per scoop. However when they were temporarily out of stock, I used another brand call Mus-L Blast, assuming it would be a find substitute. I was in horror to discover that you need to ingest 4 scoops just to get 20 g of protein while at the same time you are devouring 80 GRAMS OF SUGAR!!!. Simply put I was mortified

  • hey Lee, can you help me out, im a big guy and my work out routine is just not working anymore, do u have a routine that will bring fast results for pecs biceps/triceps?

  • hey Lee, can you help me out, im a big guy and my work out routine is just not working anymore, do u have a routine that will bring fast results for pecs biceps/triceps?

  • Hey lee is it okay If you go above the limit of the required protein to have everyday? Like for example if I only need 100 grams of protein a day and I would eat like 130 grams of protein a day. Is this ok?

  • @charger498

I recommend eating between 1 and 1.5 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight daily.

  • Ive have been tacking in half a gram of protean per Lb of body weight dayley at the most and im 3 times stronger than what I was before I started lifting.

  • Thanks Lee Great information

  • Hey u just told that we should consume protien rt after waking up n after working out but the thing is i workout early in the morrnin n have my shake rt after my workout should i also drinknit after waking up?? Its it going to b too much pr...otein in too less time???

  • @TheGymguru

If you train first thing in the morning you can have your shake right after your workout.

  • nice one!

  • Great video, but what brand do you use? Thanks.

  • @TeeBaqe

I vary my brands all the time, some of my favorites are Optimum Nutrition Whey and Gaspari Myofusion. Even Costco has good deals on whey protein.

  • @leemhayward I, too, Lee, stand behind Optimum Nutrition's Gold Standard whey proteins

  • Thanks for the video Lee. I was thinking about getting a protein supplement to use after my workouts. You are the man for this.

One question: I am a hargainer. Would whey protein be the best supplement to use to help me gain muscle?

  • very great video i just went to skin doc b/c i was having an acne outbreak and yes i was having the 2 shakes a day like you recommen in your video and he said there is no link... but what is your opinion... is all the protein causing an enzyme or hormone increase hence the breakouts?

also optimum nutrition whey protein was on the safe list correct since that is prob one of the more popular brands out on the market?

  • which are the 3 companies that had to many heavy metals?

  • @PblGunReviewShow

EAS ready to drink and Muscle Milk chocolate and vanilla flavors.

  • @leemhayward i didnt think that EAS make a protein RTD... i thought they only made ready to drink meal replacement shakes

  • Very helpful video, you explain everything really well.

  • You are the man Lee!

  • thank you lee i love you no homo

  • ke ondas lee un saludo carnal de mexico

  • Great video Lee

  • I love you Lee, these videos are awesome...hopefully you'll cover creatine and nitric oxide products further down the line

  • Lee, I usualy try to wake up one hour earlier and try to have a protein shake and go back to sleep for an hour after I wake up I then have my breakfast. Is this good?

As a side note completly of topic, I was thinking of buying The new encyclopedia of modern bodybulding by Arnold, have you ever read this and would you recommend it?

  • I really like this video, It would be really informative if you had the actualy levels of Contamination of Arsenic, cadmiun and lead. So people could compared it with your average steak.

The part I thought was kinda vague was you mentioned that you assumed the Protein Manufacture took steps to rectify the situation, if you could list the companies those taking their protein could find out if they have or haven't done something.

  • Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo helpful! Thanks!! Looking forward to your super mixture!

  • but what brands do You use?????

  • (Part 2 of 2) I take a brand of whey called "Bluebonnet" Protein Powder that I buy from my local health food store, that is supposed to be all natural. According to the ingredient list there is only All Natural Whey, and Stevia Extract (natural flavoring). This sounds pretty safe to me. Would you agree? Bluebonnet was not one of the 15 brands listed in the consumer report. And although you said small levels are ok, you will be healthier in the long run without any at all. What do you think?

  • (Part 1 of 2) Hey Lee, I have read that consumer report as well, and as I understand it there are ways to tell whether or not these supplements have some heavy metals in them by reading the ingredient label. I read somewhere that the ingredient "crystalline fructose" naturally contains trace amounts of arsenic. Look on the ingredient list for Muscle Milk, and you will see it contains this additive. And the Consumer Report does indeed indicate that Muscle Milk has dangerous levels of arsenic.

  • What protein powders had the most metals?

  • Most of the time that I drink any kind of protein supplement my kidneys do end up hurting the very next day. Now I get what you're saying that they don't harm the kidneys initially, but would you suggest that I find an alternative to protein supplements anyway?

  • Cheers again lee. Top work mate!

  • Is advanced body performance a good protein product from gnc

  • Lee, as always you have provided some good down to earth information. I think I can speak for most everyone here when I say thank you and please keep up the fine job you are doing to promote bodybuilding and fitness in general.

  • Great video. Very informative. Would like to know the brands that faired well (heavy metal survey). I am a 46 year old powerlifter and I use protein supplements to get the increased nutrient requirement when I am training for a meet. Keep up the good work!

  • Really Good Vids And Good Information Helped Me Alot

  • this doesn't seem like it should be his voice... weird...

  • Gaspari - Myofusion

    nom nom nom nom

  • great video Lee, look forward to the next one!

  • Good comprehensive information!

A year ago I took a body assessment test, and I told the lady that I was taking 1gram of PP per lb of bodyweight. She told me this was too much, and that it should be per kg of bodyweight. Thats quite a drastic cut in protein, so I wasn't sure about what to believe. Of course I'm watching these bodybuilder training videos which showcase their diet to be quite high in protein, but of course they are pros.

  • What about creatine?

  • Dude Lee I know these videos must be hard work but man they really are helpful. Please keep them coming.

  • 5 pound 40-50$? are u crazy here in greece 5 pounds cost 100euro

  • good video lee!

  • Lee, I use to take protein supplements about 12-15 years ago and the results were quick and impressive.

However, I found that the muscle I gained when doing so was not as "real" or authentic compared to when I just worked out and ate naturally.

I find that muscle gained the natural (harder and slower) way tends to last longer and feel better.

    Is this just my imagination.

I am back in the gym for the first time in years and my body is looking good - dont know if i should go pack to supps?

  • @awhodatt i dont think there should be any difference cus its just protein that theyve taken out of normal food and made a "concentrated" powder off?

  • @Wizhix I know - in theory there shouldnt be a difference - but honestly, I do see and feel a difference.

When I take protein shakes my muscles grow bigger at a faster rate, HOWEVER, I have noticed that if I happen to stop working out my muscles DISAPPEAR at a much faster and rather alarming rate when I have attained them using protein powder as opposed to "normal" foods.

Its as if protein powders "inflate" the body ... and to stop using them is like sticking a pin in the body - *POOF!*

  • @awhodatt it sounds abit like kreatine but i dont think you know what u take, about the musclebuilding rate and loss, uhm when u use proteinpowder u maybe get the amount needed to build muscle and when u dont use it you dont eat enough or something? :P sorry for bad english im 16 from sweden, i dont know so much about this either i just say how it could be :P

  • @Wizhix Dont worry about the English dude - you probably speak 3 or 4 languages - I only speak 1 - its cool.

On the contrary, my experience with creatine was more positive than protein supps. The quality of muscle was a bit more real and lean but the side effect was I would feel dizzy at times during my workout and it tended to dehydrate my body. I know they advise to drink extra water at the same time but I figured - why bother. Anything that dries out the body (70% water) cant be very healthy.

  • @awhodatt They have products called protein shots that contain 42 grams of protein in 100 ml. Hard to believe? Sure is. But when you look carefully at the ingredients you will see this: collagenic protein isolate.

Wonder what that is? Collagen Protein in animals is composed of bones, teeth, tendons and ligaments (flesh and connective tissues). Aside from nastiness, this is a very low quality protein.

  • @awhodatt I feel the same as you. I have never used protein shakes, etc (used multi vitamins before) and it seems to me there's an exaggeration and false premises in the supplement industry. When did we have an industry that genuinely cared about the people? Medicine, fast food, etc industries all rigged to rob us from our hard earned money without regarding peoples lives. So why should the supplement industry be any different?

It's a very shady business with a very dark history and reputation.

  • @Radiation4TheNation Amen! Thanks for replying - nice to see I'm not the only one that feels this way.

The thing is a lot of the guys clicking on these videos are young guys who are new to the gym and are looking to bulk up quickly - I used 2 think that way when I was younger as well. But like I said earlier, experience has proven to me that muscle gained the natural (non-protein supplmnts) way is of better quality and longevity.

Plus, when we you get a bit older many men tend to not focus ...

  • @Radiation4TheNation on getting big and bulky as the testosterone levels have calmed done a bit and the egos have leveled off. I now work out to feel firmer all over and of course for aesthetic reasons as well but it is more in the endeavor of overall fitness.

Btw fellas, big bulging chests, and arms are generally show muscles that impress mostly other men! For the ladies you want to focus on your abs, back, legs & shoulders- this is my experience with women in life & conversations.

  • @Radiation4TheNation Im not completely knocking protein shakes, Im just stating my observations on the matter.

In my opinion, unless you are looking to embark on a serious career in bodybuilding I would advise guys to stay away from protein supplements.

Workout right, eat right and sleep right and you will eventually reach an impressive standard in your physique.

Plus, again - the quality and duration of the new muscle growth will be far superior than when compared to the protein supp way.

  • @awhodatt Im with you man, just eat right, sleep right, and a good workout will give you good gains without wasting money on protein or supplements, ive wasted over 1000 dllrs on protein and other supplements last year, this year i havent bougt any supplements due to money issues, and honestly, im seeing the same gains or maybe better gains just by eating right, and i dont eat 180 grams of protein.

  • @awhodatt and @thetelleroffer, Thanks for sharing your experiences. I totally agree with your points. I mean I literally know people who claims to need 300 grams of protein every day. Even heard 500 g. This is just insane.

Having to believe unreasonable numbers for the required amount of protein is what the supplements industry wants us to do. So you would take the "easy way", which isn't very easy at all when you have to consume their stuff in liters.

Anyone heard of protein shots? (cont.)

  • @awhodatt So there is protein and there is protein. Maybe that's the factor that defines the quality of one's muscles depending on where and how one gets their protein supply.

  • Hey Lee, great video. I'm 19 years old, I've been bodybuilding for one year, using eggs, meat, chicken, bread for my protein. I'm thinking of trying some whey protein shakes now. What do you think?

  • @christurkthebrave "bread for my protein" bread? for protein? ooooook whatever

  • @freddy692000 dude, a single slice of brown soda bread contains 1.3g of protein, and just 0.7g of fat.

  • @christurkthebrave and how many carbs that u didnt tell ~64% so i ll stick to my salmon eggs and chicken...

  • @christurkthebrave

Yes, protein shakes are a great addition to your diet. Plus they are usually cheaper then solid food protein.

  • @leemhayward

You didn't mention Cholesterol. Many of these proteins are high in Cholesterol, and when you take several shakes a day you exceed the recommended daily limit. I try to buy powers that are very low in Cholesterol. I discovered this when my LDL Cholesterol spiked. When I changed brands it went back down.

  • awesome work mate! I was wondering what your thoughts are on l-Glutamine and a separate BCAA supp. I know protein powders are eventually broken down in BCAA but am still unclear as to why you would take a separate BCAA supp... cheers...

  • Brilliant and informative..thanks.

@lilshydude your point was covered in the vid.

  • you forgot to mention the effects of protein and creatine on your liver and kidneys

  • Thanks Lee, another very informative video. very interesting.

  • This video has a lot of good info. Thanks Lee.

  • Is there a good protein for people who normally get back and chest acne while taking protein?

  • what about calories from protein?? and mass gainers?? is it true protein dehadrates you>> it takes alloe

  • This whole supplement video project turned out to be BIGGER then I originally thought. Heck, I'm 2 videos in and only got so far as protein powder :-)

So I will be making this a multi-part video series. I really want to get this information out there to help clarify all the BS and mis-conceptions that are floating around with regards to supplements.

  • @leemhayward good shit

  • @leemhayward we are w8ing to shows how to stack correct Lee YAY!!!

  • @leemhayward It's a great video you have here! Very factual and educational! Thanks, Keep it up!

  • @leemhayward It's a great video you have here! Very factual and educational! Thanks, Keep it up!

  • @leemhayward

thank you for the videos. BUT i was expecting you to cover much more of the obscure category of supplements on the market. NOT another protein powder lecture.

I understand that some out there may not know facts about the protein powders , but the majority of us here have read these facts on protein powders many times before . i.e. (u need 1-2 gram per lb of bodyw, the raw material come fromfew manufactures,no studies to suggest damaged kidneys, casein, whey, egg proteins etc.

  • @leemhayward

would you kindly cover stuff like TESTOSTERONE boosters & NITRIC OXIDE supplements. These are for me the more controversial ones, and i truely dont know if any of them work or whether they are total waste of money and why?

would you kindly cover these 2 category of supplements.

in terms of FAT LOSS supplements ,i know that they are waste of money in general, and they do nothing more than increase heart rate and body temperature, and they key to fatloss is reall ur diet

  • lee u said to drink a protein shake 1st thing in the morning and 1 after working out, but can u also drink a protein shake before working out?

  • @rammajamma1993 The protein shakes are food, in liquid form. Yes, you can have it before a workout.

I prefer solid food most of the time; and to workout on neither an empty stomach nor a full stomach.

  • @rammajamma1993 You could, but then that's 3 shakes, When you drink your protien, it;s usaully to put your body to an anabolic state, and your in a canobolic state when you wake wake up and after a workout.

  • @rammajamma1993 you can take protein shake anytime of the day you dont got time for whole food but before and after wo is better imo

  • @rammajamma1993 i was told to have a shake BEFORE i go to sleep and after i do my workout
