When Soupy Sales had a tendency to guess a mystery guest because he thought he recognized the voice instead of playing the game to its logical conclusion.
True, those times off, especially the 7 ears after the attack, really hurt her familiarity with the public. In show biz, out of sight, out of mind. however, she still performs to sell out crowds the world over and still has millions of fans. She is a legend and should be a houselhold name similar to Elvis.
@cremeofthereich Right, but it is Connie herself who is responsible as she never had a PR person or publicist. There are many lesser stars than Connie who are household names. That was my point.
@cremeofthereich Right. She is still active and getting great reviews and honors, but still no PR or publicist. This last weekend, she was honored by Boys' Town and she has been honored by numerous Italian organizations.
@Shrinksjp She had a great concert in NY and has had great ones in SF and around the world. She reinterpreted Where The Boys Are a few months ago, produced by Lady Gaga's creator of all peole. He also happens to be Connie's godson. She has not released it because she says that it sounds strange.
@impCaesarAvg she took those two years off because she was brutally raped in her motel where she was doing a show ..it took 2 years before she could leave her house
@moecat1000 "Should I Tie a Yellow Ribbon" was 1973. The rape was 1974. The Connie we see on this episode of What's My Line is sweet, beautiful, and innocent -- not a survivor of horror.
I remember when she did SHOULD I TIE A YELLOW RIBBON and I thought it would be a come back Hit for her ~ of course a year later I saw her at Westbury when she was assaulted just a few days into the engagement - then she didn't resurface for quite a while - WHAT A find to see this! Thanks so much for sharing! A true rarity.
Those of you who agree with me that Connie SHOULD be in the Rock and Roll hall of Fame,,help me by writing to the foundation and encourage them to induct her,,here is the address...
Connie was raped in November 1974. This episode was taped in June 1973. So the taping of this show occurred more than a year prior to that attack.
Ironically, both she and Arlene were impersonated on "SCTV" (albeit at different times) by Andrea Martin, with their respective surnames changed to "Franklin."
Is the taping date of June 1973 correct? Tie A Yellow Ribbon (by Dawn) came out in 1974; Connie's version, The Answer, came out after Dawn's version in 1974.
Tony Orlando & Dawn's "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" was actually a hit for them in mid-1973. Their 1974 hits were "Who's in the Strawberry Patch with Sally," "Steppin' Out (Gonna Boogie Tonight)" and "Look in My Eyes Pretty Woman."
Syndicated WML, gathering up mystery guests 5 times a week for months at a time, typically had to put an ( 0:23 ) introduction with the name. The audience in late afternoon / early evening typically was bigger and (like me in the 1970s) younger. I got introduced to quite a lot of celebrities thanx to syndicated WML.
Thanx to NorbertR33 for introducing another generation to the syndicated WML.
Even in its syndicated 5 days a week stage, WML could still be reasonably all star: Broadway actor Larry Blyden, singer Connie Francis, radio show host Arlene Francis, comic Soupy Sales, and actors Meredith MacRae and Alan Alda.
WML used Alan regularly, particularly before he signed his M*A*S*H contract, and he always brought enthusiasm to the various demonstrations.
Thanks for sharing this! I think Connie Francis clearly had the greatest voice of her era. Isn't it great seeing your heroes still young again?

No one recognized her voice. Maybe she shouldn't have taken those two years off.

@Shrinksjp Sure we love Connie and wish her the very best but let's not take this adulation too far. Up there with Elvis? What are you smoking?
cremeofthereich 10 months ago
@cremeofthereich I did nto say "up there withe Elvis". I said that with her record sales, she should be a household name like Elvis.
Shrinksjp 10 months ago
@Shrinksjp Understood, but consider that folks often become "household names" not owing merely to record sales.

@Shrinksjp Absolutely, got it. Connie was a very fine performer. I say was only because I don't know if she remains active. Thanks for the comments.
