soo, I am a 18yo metalhead, yeah I'm just a kid... and I like most kinds of metal, tho I'm more into black, death, thrash... but no matter what, Judas Priest are the fuckin' best metal band EVER, not only from heavy metal, but from every genre of music... and Rob Halford is the DEVIL, he's the best singer ever to walk the earth... and I saw them on 2011, Rob Halford is a fuckin' beast live... said all this, just to say that Tim Owens is not as good as Halford, but he is still pretty awesome!
Ok this is best live version of this song a could find on youtube. And it's better than anything a could find performed by Halford. Rob sounds like an angry 12 year old most of the time.....
XD Tim fuckin rule! He don't need his head voice all the time to sing this....Witch is fuckin great! so all rob fanboys...Stop talking about Tim...HE RULE
theres no doubt this guy can sing BUT on the other hand Rob has always been more suited for priest, his stage presence just fit and Rippers feels alittle out of place
I think JP should call ripper again. He can sing with halford and helping him with the notes he can't reach, also JP records tend to use 2 vocal tracks. A JP with Halford and Owens will probably rip the space and time!

As much as I am a fan of JP, there is not a single live with Halford which I like! His vocals in the 90s till our days completely suck, so I dont see anything wrong with letting the better singer ride the motorbike!
@TheNeoton Very well, but I'm not talking about Halford as a singer in technical sense, but as an icon and symbol of JP with all his attributes. Thus - although Rob definitely is NOT in his top form, I will always amire him. If he wasn't the singer of the band during Epitaph Tour, I wouldn't go to see these shows (April - 2nd gig in Poland). Maybe it's because I'm an orthodox in this matter. But I totally get your point, good Sir. :)

when rob sings this song bad it is horrible , however when he sings it well he fucking sings it better than the studio version. Ripper is just more consistent than Rob
I've gotta say, Ripper is a great singer. He owns this performance. Rob Halford is a better fit for Priest, but Tim was a fine replacement when he was in the band
omfg u studpid footbal player u look so fucking out of time/of space whuen u deliver deliver that annoying scream,oh dear go can u pls can kill thta stupid nonsense mortal
now correct me if i am wrong, but the song seems to be tuned down a few steps..
therefore, the ripper can sing in a lower register, making it easier for the notes be sung and have a better tone. Anyone else think there is a change in pitch?
@JonJonWhatsGood -absolutely turned a half step down, he could probably handle a standard tuning though in 2002.. Just saw him playing with Yngwie and he was screaming pretty good too
I like Ripper and Halford's singing styles-I can't choose between them. I do think Ripper has greater stage presence than Halford. Halford stood rock still and stared at his feet on stage and only really moved around when he wasn't singing.
Singing this song Live was done awesomely ..... But common .... He looks like a Comedian on stage .....look at him at 0:15 and 5:04 ... rob has more solid look....
Ripper uses a lot of falsetto on this live, Halford does not uses falsetto to sing this song live... That's why Ripper reaches higher notes on this one. But if you check out "Halford - Painkiller live at Anaheim" you'll see that Halford can sing this song as well.
judas priest isnt judas priest without rob halford....yea i might be biast but oh well...rob halford is the ONE and ONLY in my book...and i dont like the sound of this guys voice rob halford does it perfectly in my opinion....this guy just doesnt have robs touch im really not feeling it...long live judas priest WITH halford
Halford is a god and Ripper is not better than him but you got to admit that he is way better on Painkiller live than Halford. Ripper is a fabulous singer.
You can't put "aging" into this argument because 40 years old Ripper sounded better than 40 years old Halford on Painkiller anyway. But like I said, Halford is a much better singer overall, especially in the 70's.
IF HALFORD IS METAL GOD, RIPPER IS METAL SATAN! VERY POWERFUL VOCAL, and for me power=good vocalist, its metal, not traditional jazz \m/, I love Robert very much, but if I want to listen Painkiller live, I prefer Ripper Owens. its funny, when someone says that robert is "better", both they are five star metal vocalists, age is one and only difference between them. sorry for my perfect english \m/, keep on progressive heavy metal!!!
As much as I love Halford, Ripper's performance was better than any of Halford's live performances of this song, he completely nailed this, only a dumb blind fanboy would disagree.
@chiefmaster98 Which might explain why you think the albums with Ripper are better... Check out their classic albums. With Ripper it was just generic heavy metal stuff, pretty mediocre in my opinion. But even some of the albums you mentioned are better - Painkiller, Screaming..? I mean dude, had they been with Ripper from the beginning of their existence, they never would have made it big - he's neither a great singer nor a good songwriter.
@metalheadsam9891 Yeah, he's a mediocre singer, that's one of the reasons he's never made a career (the other being he doesn't know much about composing).
@Eliskoopa Mediocre singer? You know nothing about vocals if you state so. I can agree that he doesn't know much about composing but vocally he is fantastic. His falsetto is extremely powerful and good.
@GoodGuitarSolos I say he's a mediocre singer because his voice is flat, lifeless and his melodies dull. He's just not a good vocalist. One-dimensional I would say. Oh, and you saying I know nothing about vocals is kind of funny, cause at the same time you say Ripper uses falsetto - he never has. Show me one song where he uses falsetto, expert. And to me power =/= good vocalist.
@Eliskoopa Mediocre isn't the right word. Ripper is technically excellent, though I can agree that he is pretty one-dimensional and only resorts for his powerful screams.
Are you serious? He uses falsetto in almost all his songs (aka. non-modal voice), here he goes for it during those sustained high notes too. 6:20 is a fantastic example of his falsetto: he blends it well so it sounds fuller.
@Eliskoopa Michael Jackson does use falsetto too, same with Mercury and Prince. Still, Ripper's notes are powerful (so called 'reinforced') falsetto which he blends to sound as full and impressively powerful as he can. His switching is also top-notch which makes his switches to falsetto really subtle and hence gives the impression of him singing in full chest voice.
Prince actually has similar high notes, one good example are the fantastic F#5s from "Darling Nikki".
listen his last scream...it is very easy to understand that Ripper can never be close to the level of Halford in high note department. His are gritty and noticeably lower than Halford's high scream. In terms of cleaness (clear yet strong) high notes nobody can touch Halford. There are singers reaching higher than Halford but some clean notes are too weak, and some strong notes are gritty. Everybody who can sing can understand what I mean. It is so difficult to produce such clean high notes.
@DX231 i was thinkin the gods of metal when its still lower, my basic point is ripper is an awesome singer and even halford cant sing as high as the studio version live, as that version was unhuman
@xierotron as DX231 said, halford sounded better than ripper in the live in anaheim version. Everybody who can also sing metal songs knows ripper never reaches the level of Halford. If one has a basic idea of notes and techniques, it is clear for him that Ripper in this video, used the techniques to reach such notes, e.g. lowering the notes at the end of every sentences, breathing even between words, not at the end of sentence, and let the audience sing etc. I love Ripper but truth is truth.
@deathbloodydeath ok yh halford probably can reach higher notes but ripper has a more powerful voice, best way to describe it is halford is the jimi hendrix of singers sure he can do everything is very experimental but its all over the place and not very structured at times but i think ripper is the EVH of singing in that its perhaps not as experiment or as technical but its more structured and i think ripper sings more commerical songs better like breaking the law but halford owns on freewheel
@xierotron Yes friend. This is a friendly argument and I also accept your points. Ripper has a more powerful voice on low notes (his vibratos are better) but in terms of clean-yet-strong high notes Halford is second to none. Ripper sings this song pause-start-pause-start technique which gives him to be able to lower the starting key of the next sentence and also breathing. I am always into clear high notes and thus I perfer Halford. Unlike other Halford worshipper, I do love ripper.
@EpicHeavyMetalRoadie this version is better than Halford if I agree with it ... but have realized that even the song is heard much different to the original version ... is a bit faster, that's the style of owens, different style of Halford
@eddywylde hey dude, no offense, but you might think that we r on a sharing web site, with so many people world wide..huh?!. That's my oppinion and I won't change it.. Owens is good for me, and he's better than Rob FOR ME... So if you're offended by my words, go suck Rob's dick and leave me alone :)
oh! i was forgetting, Owens takes the aplausse with this version of painkiller ... but nothing compared with Halford with the other songs. UP THE FUCKING PRIEST \,,/
@GooodLive A comment like that doesn't come from a Priest-fan. Halford is the metal God. Ripper was a fair replacement for a few years, but neither 'Jugulator' or 'Demolition' is up there with any other Priest release.
@GooodLive hey man, if you think that Halford sucks to sing ... sure you have not heard yourself huh?
Owens is good, but Halford has been and by far the best vocalist ever that priest has had . no offense ... but better shut up your fucking mouth and think well what you write ... asshole ¬¬"

@TropianTV Ripper sang this with guitars on a full step down. Hes singing it significantly lower then to what halford does
DX231 7 months ago
@DX231 yh but halford signs it significantly lower than the album version live anyway n probably signs it another full step down from ripper nowadays

@xierotron listen to him singing in halford painkiller live in anaheim 2003
DX231 7 months ago
@DX231 i was thinkin the gods of metal when its still lower, my basic point is ripper is an awesome singer and even halford cant sing as high as the studio version live, as that version was unhuman
xierotron 7 months ago
@xierotron as DX231 said, halford sounded better than ripper in the live in anaheim version. Everybody who can also sing metal songs knows ripper never reaches the level of Halford. If one has a basic idea of notes and techniques, it is clear for him that Ripper in this video, used the techniques to reach such notes, e.g. lowering the notes at the end of every sentences, breathing even between words, not at the end of sentence, and let the audience sing etc. I love Ripper but truth is truth.
deathbloodydeath 6 months ago
@deathbloodydeath ok yh halford probably can reach higher notes but ripper has a more powerful voice, best way to describe it is halford is the jimi hendrix of singers sure he can do everything is very experimental but its all over the place and not very structured at times but i think ripper is the EVH of singing in that its perhaps not as experiment or as technical but its more structured and i think ripper sings more commerical songs better like breaking the law but halford owns on freewheel
xierotron 6 months ago
@xierotron Yes friend. This is a friendly argument and I also accept your points. Ripper has a more powerful voice on low notes (his vibratos are better) but in terms of clean-yet-strong high notes Halford is second to none. Ripper sings this song pause-start-pause-start technique which gives him to be able to lower the starting key of the next sentence and also breathing. I am always into clear high notes and thus I perfer Halford. Unlike other Halford worshipper, I do love ripper.

@TropianTV halford live in anaheim 2003. Judas priest live in sofia 2004. both times as good or better than tim owens.

slipknir 3 months ago
@EpicHeavyMetalRoadie this version is better than Halford if I agree with it ... but have realized that even the song is heard much different to the original version ... is a bit faster, that's the style of owens, different style of Halford

@eddywylde hey dude, no offense, but you might think that we r on a sharing web site, with so many people world wide..huh?!. That's my oppinion and I won't change it.. Ripper is fuckin awesome!!! Rob Halford sucks
GooodLive 9 months ago
@GooodLive A comment like that doesn't come from a Priest-fan. Halford is the metal God. Ripper was a fair replacement for a few years, but neither 'Jugulator' or 'Demolition' is up there with any other Priest release.
SilverTounge85 8 months ago
@GooodLive hey man, if you think that Halford sucks to sing ... sure you have not heard yourself huh?
Owens is good, but Halford has been and by far the best vocalist ever that priest has had . no offense ... but better shut up your fucking mouth and think well what you write ... asshole ¬¬"
