  • If you don't mind me saying, there are better and quicker and more accurate ways to do this.

  • What is the buying cost of that lathe? I have very old machines in my home shop in the UK, An old bridgeport and soon a german lathe of a similar size. I could never warrant buying a new machine of this size but I would invest in a bed regrind and a new chuck.

  • Gunsmithing isn't a dying trade by any means, If you get into making wildcats you will always have business. I'm doing the AGI courses then buying a lathe or lathe/mill combo. very excited about it as well.

  • i am a machinist ;)

  • Machine tech set up. played that game for 2 years. That doesn't require a machinist.

  • I feel it's a dying trade. Shops are closing everywhere. I'm from the Saginaw valley area. Almost all the shops I use to work at are gone. Gordy's using a Four jaw. You need three machines to rifle a barrel. One to drill. One to ream. One to rifle.

  • please show me how to make deep hole in barrel all process...start to end

  • I start in spring 2011. Machine tech-setup. Its not a dying trade by a long shot. I will do 3 simesters and take what I learn and move on to Riflesmithing. I plan on a Grizzley myself.

  • @delaets

I spoke to a friend of mine who is a super good machinist and has been doing it for the past 40 years, I told him I was thinking about doing some gun smithing, He told me to learn Machine setup and lathe/milling tec first,

Lucky for me I did several Machinist classes back in 1973 while I was in college.

My friend used to own a large machine shop, But now does nothing but custom rifle barrels, Clambering etc.Your plan is spot on ! Have fun!

Who says you cant teach an old dog :)

  • @delaets Nice, goodluck! Don't forget to put up video's!

  • whats teh best chuck to get for thread and doing things with barrels?

  • being a machinist is not a dying trade. it is a changing trade. the days of manual machining are basically gone unless you are a tool maker or your doing something like gunsmithing or rebuilding motors. Im lucky i work in a small shop and get the chance to do alot of different machining tasks from manual to cnc. :)

  • Just curious Gordy, does your personal gunsmithing lathe have a 4 or 6 jaw chuck?

  • I realy love this video..if you pay atention you can see what makes a real shooter.

  • I want to be a machinist!

  • Get yourself a LeBlonde Servo Shift Regal Engine lathe. You will just love how you just turn a big dial to change speed while watching the chuck rock back and forth into the next gear!

Me, I like to turn barrel's in collet's. It's a more accurate set up!

  • @yamasubaruger I because a machinist in the military. Meaning all of my schooling was FREE! I was thought on how to read dial calipers and use the lathe and the mill. i didnt even know what a machinist was until four months into my job. but yeah i also got tought how to use and be somewhat profecient with the CNC Lathe and Mill

  • Is the bushing a tight fit onto the range rod? how do you know if the bushing has travelled in and out 2 inches and not just the range rod?

  • Your shop is way to clean :)

  • Why not just cut some brass bushings inversely without re-chucking them and them chamber between centers?
