This is one of the most challenging pieces for band (a "standard" for decades now). So many woodwind parts are exposed and intonation is the absolute key. This performance illustrates the downfall of many bands - groups that are full of outstanding technicians who have yet to learn to truly listen to each other and respond by adjusting their intonation to stay in tune relative to all the other players they are playing with. A good performance, musical, but painful intonation in parts.
@jsydney61 I know the piece well enough to know that YOU should never listen to yourself - you obviously can't hear. The intonation was really quite good.
Thanks for the memories. I played this gorgeous piece with the CalState Univ. Northridge Symphonic Wind Ensemble awaaaay back in the mid-70's and it remains one of the most "unband-like" pieces I've ever played. Don't miss the strings. Very fond memories and a nice performance by this group.
Hope y'all liked the Baylor Wind Ensemble rendition of this at TMEA last week. =]

Would it be a crime to say that I like this version better than the All-State performance? 'Cause I do.

@ModestlyLame Sorry... the Texas 5A all-state band performed this exact arrangement. I just assumed people knew wat I was talking about.

WT has always performed this one beautifully. I just wish the sound hadn't gone all buzzy halfway through.
