I did a bit of an article that was featured in the MG Enthusiast magazine in December 2010. Search for "pdfcast mgtf turbo" in Google and you will find it there, for a short version of the conversion.
this is awesome, I found your thread on the MG forums and it will surely provide me a good read.
May I ask how much the total cost for this was and how big the effort is compared to a for example a T series conversion? What else was needed to be changed, clutch gearbox? etc.
I currently have a MG ZR 160 and might be interested to do this aswell in the future.
Hi have never worked on a T-series, but I guess the effort should be the same, as I tried to keep the engine stock standard as much as possible. Everything is standard (clutch, 'box, engine) except for uprated lower oil ladder and MLS head gasket, and injectors. Fuel pump uprated recently to Walbro 255.
I did most of the work myself, so saved a lot in costs - think it was relatively cheap compared to so called "bolt-on" conversions for MG, which are extremely rare at 235 BHP.
Have you changed the engine to another one, or have you simply fitted a turbo to the existing motor ? I mean, can you buy a turbokit for the TF160 or is it something you have made youself, like manufactured a custom manifold ?
@fuldmane This was a custom turbo conversion to the standard 1800 K-series engine, running a Garrett turbocharger etc etc. If you do a search for MGTFVids, I have a photobucket detailing parts of the conversion
The car produced 175kW (235 BHP) and 292 Nm (215 Lb-Ft) torque at the flywheel at 6000 rpm on a rolling road test, with the power curve still heading upwards. To put these figures into perspective, the maximum torque of a TF160 at sea level is 174Nm – with the turbo conversion, this level of torque was surpassed at 2500 rpm already. Similarly, a power output of 118kW is reached at 4200 rpm as opposed to the 6900 rpm in the standard TF160.
Maybe the tF160 is "OK" at the coast, but the turbo transforms the car into something VERY different. It is realy effortless to achieving the same perfromance as the standard TF with lots of capacity to spare.
I would love to turbo my 160 Its pretty quick now but not as quick as i had imagined it would be. I think the claimed 0-60 time of 6.9sec is a little optimistic, maybe its because i have it running on 17" rims......I really dont know.
