I lived at West Dean in southern England where Edward James came from. My uncle worked in the gardens of West Dean House, James's ancestral home. By all accounts, James really was quite eccentric but kindly. He asked my uncle to go with him to help build this garden but he couldn't go. Would have been a hell of an adventure. Never met James myself; he had already gone when I was born and West Dean House had become a girls school. Still, this garden is a great monument to to a man with vision.
