Watching this you get a sense of what a powerful singer and performer he is...the rudimentary piano playing just disappears behind his singing. And really still a kid in this clip.
rockypants said this song is awful... it kind of is. JT turns a throwaway lousy song and 2 chords on a piano that he can't even play into something amazing. this is both self-indulgent and an act of bravery. And an amazing voice.
the instruments usually carry the lyrics and melody through a song. in this case, James uses those two chords as a constant, more of a percussion than anything. and his voice changes to create distinctly different sounding parts to the song. if he hadn't stated it, I wouldn't have noticed just how simple this one is.
"This is a piano!" LOL Not only is he a fantastic guitar singer/songwriter but he also has a great sense of humour when he plays live. If you have yet to see James Taylor live, make sure you do! Saw him in Edinburgh, Scotland and it is still my favourite concert I have been to.
@arcidiaa Well, I'll put it to you this way. Having seen how songs are written, and how musicians work - some songs are written in 5 minutes, due to serious inspiration from a lot of beers or a lot of green. This sounds like one of those songs.
JT evolved from here into some great stuff, so I have no complaints.
I first became aware of JT when in high school and have been a fan ever since. GREAT song and video here! It's hard to categorize his stuff and some of his best songs were never released as singles for some reason, but this dude is the real deal! I hate when "JT" is used for that little clown, Justin Tiimberlake. This is THE ONLY "JT" !!!
Today Music is just a Product, designed for certain Targetgroups, sung by Artist who just hired to do the Job.
That´s why JT just need 4 Fingers and 2 Chords to touch our Hearts, cause he´s honest, he feels what he sings. And that´s what Music really is; Emotions.
amazing, because i just watched an interview with Ben about being the son of two famous songwriters, and the young JT's voice and mannerisms are eerily identical to his son's! ... WOW.
first guitar and now writing songs and playing the piano. Just kidding - he is obviously very talented. Sound like he took a few lessons from his friend, Carole King.
Seeing this video of James at such a young age is like watching a kindergarten performance of a man who went on to earn his doctorate in singing and songwriting!
Brings back memories of driving I5 & I10 with weed, whites and wine back in the mid-seventies, many times...JT kept me company w/ an 8-track...YEAHHHH!
I have another version of this exact song on tape by someone else but I don't know who it is- anyone know of any covers? I recorded it off of KTCL in FT Collins around 1980 or so.

I'd bet that James could sing the phone book while thumping on a shoe box and it would sound pretty good.
