gr8 video u hav.. its called murchunga n is suppposed to be a traditional nepali instrument.. a jaw harp...i just got myself one of these instrument....:) i wondr .. if tongue has something to do as well while playing it.. i make a vibrating sound by moving the lips... is there anything to do with the tongue too.. great work..thanks...
what kind of jews harp is this. and what key is it in? I have an old one that is much deeper and its played off the teeth, it just doesnt sound as cool as yours. its yours played of the teeth or the lips?
there was this 'do you qualify back to school advertisement' and there was these wormies by it and they were moving to the exact rythmn of this!! amazing!!!!!!!!
Thanks for posting this. I am just beginning on this instrument and find it very calming. Trying to learn all I can at this point and your vid helped. ;)
I love the jaw harp. I'm starting to get pretty good at it myself. Say, where do you get yours? I only have the standard $8 straight-from-the-music-store and a Vietnamese one with 3 tongues.
Is it just me or do the larger jews harp tend to sound better than the smaller ones when played? Or is it just the difference between the players in the different vids?
...... wow a real conversation between knowledgeable people on You Tube without the awful inane stuff, thank you, I found all the contributions here very helpful.
Where did you find such statements? It's not clear, where the maultrommel came from, but it appears in many variations all over the world and it seems they developed independently. It is one of the basic human music instruments, one piece in the evolution which has been surprisingly similar everywhere even without connections to the rest of the world.
Well, I doubt that this is proven, because you have also bone, wooden, bamboo variations of maultrommel (jews harp, grumle, brumla,...). Some say the first notes in Europe about this instrument come from the 10th century, archeological findings are even older, but not as old as the other claim it was already known to Romans and it's existence can be traced quite far into Chinese or Altai region history.
It may be quite important for Scandinavian music, but that is all.
Got discovery channel? there was a program about older different instrument in the world. one of this is the "mungiga" or most known as yews harp. the oldest of this instrument was found in sweden, and is over 2000 years old, because of the vikings travels they believe thats how its appeared around the world. they had travels all around the world, everywhere from england, france and italy to china, japan and even America.
i bet that if you try find the vid here on youtube you should find it.
Well, TV is not the best source for a research nor for making opinions and decisions. And even if it was, only one (moreover, without critical view) source is never enough
And I don't know whether Discovery channel provides some kind of "citations", so one can be able to find the very source of information given. I bet Discovery channel is more a "popular" than a scientific medium - like eg. "Ethnomusicology" journal by SEM.
A good summary is written in Grove Music Online by John Wright.
well i rather believe something thats have any kind of proof then just an argument. discovery channel is mostly more scientific then most other channels. if you can´t prove that its wrong then i rather trust discovery channel
I'm sorry to disapoint you andiders. The earliest dated jews harp findings in scandinavia are from the 1200. And there has been findings in Japan that are over 1000 years old. The jewsharp is most lightly to have it's origin from Asia. It's a wide missundestanding that the jewsharp is originally a viking instrument. True, they most lightly have used it. But it is an imported instrument.
It depends on what you mean. I say most lightly it has it´s origin in Aisa course that were the oldest are found. And arciology isn´t an exact sciense. They can still find older elsewere.
About the vikings it was just plain bad english:P Of course they have used it )( seing as when they are found in scandinavia), What I ment to show uncertenty about, was the use Andiders mentioned. There are no real known source as to what they were used for. It could have been celebrations, music in general or by the rune maters. There is, as far as I know, no real know viking tradition when it comes to jewsharp use or music.
If anyone now of any, I would be very interested in knowing were to find info about it. I am a keen player myself, and always on the lookout for new traditions.

You do realize that the name "Jew's Harp" is a derogatory stab at Jew's right? Basically the meaning is that, it's pretty simplistic and "inexpensive", that a Jew would probably buy one. I have commonly heard of it referred to as an "Ozark Harp" myself. Way to propagate propaganda and reinforce Stereotypes.
it may have been derogatory 100 years ago, but that meaning is obsolete now. The instrument is commonly referred to by a number of different names, and that's all they are.
Huh! I can't make a melody on my harp, only rhythm.. I can't make my harp phone this high tones (they're called obertones, AFAIK), and I'm trying to do it during 3 months... Maybe, my harp is too bad? My modification of jaw harp is called "drymba", it comes from West Ukraine.. Anyway, this great video forces me to play more and more :)
@yurataras I had heaps of trouble when I got mine until I read a paper on the physics of them.
Turned out because it was cheaply constructed it wasn't actually producing much volume in the overtones.
One of the factors in this is the clearance between the tongue and the frame. Hold it up to the light and if there's a wide gap then this (may) be the problem.
I reduced the clearance on mine using a vice and suddenly I could make much better overtones. YMMV

There are 2 main theories about the name Jew's Harp:
1. it is just a misspelling of "Jaws Harp", deriving from the peculiar part of the body used to keep the instrument and to propagate its sound.
2. this instrument was typical of the Jewish communities of central Europe, perhaps remotely imported from Eastern lands.
