  • So when did John Malkovich learned to play the Mouth harp?

  • what kind of jews harp is this. and what key is it in? I have an old one that is much deeper and its played off the teeth, it just doesnt sound as cool as yours. its yours played of the teeth or the lips?

  • @somesmallfry high A if I remember, played on the teeth. These are Black Fires made by Szylagyi in Hungary.

  • Where can you buy a kosher Jew's harp? :)

  • @Bram25 try my website (see channel page) or search for them on Ebay and you should find my shop!

  • Got one of these a present. I can make all kinds of sounds on it but I can't make a real tune. Love to get as good as this.

  • mongolian style : huun huur tu : where the young grass grows

  • i wwant learn how to play like that

  • @Ahkuji just sit in a corner and jamm until you've a good rhythm

  • this guy is look like YOU-KNOW_HOW :P

  • there was this 'do you qualify back to school advertisement' and there was these wormies by it and they were moving to the exact rythmn of this!! amazing!!!!!!!!

  • Holy s**t. Take Harry, dont take me, Voldemort.

  • jew harp sucks

  • how do you change the tone of it???? PLS REPLY!!!!! thanks:D

  • Thanks for posting this. I am just beginning on this instrument and find it very calming. Trying to learn all I can at this point and your vid helped. ;)

  • not that cool tbh

  • @BuildTheMoon LOL! Wahahahahah! XD

  • this is kind of jews harp melody i am looking for.. wonderful! <3

  • WHAT THE FUCK!? THIS THING IS AWESOME! is it jew harp or jaw harp?

  • you look like voldemort o_o sorry

  • i play a similar type ....but its the "juice harp' ..but i get orange juice all over me ...and it costs a fortune.

  • fail spelling

  • you really play like a bagpipe-like melody. Cool!

  • I love the jaw harp. I'm starting to get pretty good at it myself. Say, where do you get yours? I only have the standard $8 straight-from-the-music-store and a Vietnamese one with 3 tongues.

  • I would get one, but I would end up chipping the whole of my front set of teeth. I'll stick to playing the didgeridoo, guitar and harmonica.

  • @dvdsmlprstylr . Well 2 options: wear a tooth guard like a boxer or use the type that are played off the teeth...

  • @JonnyMcBoingBoing Toothguard! But offcourse :)

    Cheers!

  • wow these are amazing

  • Thank you for sharing!!! Wow, this is the first time I have ever distinguished the melody while someone plays :))

This melody resembles somehow the irish pipe but also I find it very, very close by the caracter to the melodies popular in Galicia, Western Ukraine.

    Cheers!!

  • Reminds me of a didgeridoo

  • nice, i am going to try like this.

  • good rhythm,I may try that,thanks.

  • Is it just me or do the larger jews harp tend to sound better than the smaller ones when played? Or is it just the difference between the players in the different vids?

  • where do i but a good high end jaw harp?

  • ...... wow a real conversation between knowledgeable people on You Tube without the awful inane stuff, thank you, I found all the contributions here very helpful.

  • Where did you find such statements? It's not clear, where the maultrommel came from, but it appears in many variations all over the world and it seems they developed independently. It is one of the basic human music instruments, one piece in the evolution which has been surprisingly similar everywhere even without connections to the rest of the world.

  • it comes from scandinavia. look it up. it mostly got out in the world with the vikings, on their travels. its proven that it comes from scandinavia

  • Well, I doubt that this is proven, because you have also bone, wooden, bamboo variations of maultrommel (jews harp, grumle, brumla,...). Some say the first notes in Europe about this instrument come from the 10th century, archeological findings are even older, but not as old as the other claim it was already known to Romans and it's existence can be traced quite far into Chinese or Altai region history.

It may be quite important for Scandinavian music, but that is all.

  • Got discovery channel? there was a program about older different instrument in the world. one of this is the "mungiga" or most known as yews harp. the oldest of this instrument was found in sweden, and is over 2000 years old, because of the vikings travels they believe thats how its appeared around the world. they had travels all around the world, everywhere from england, france and italy to china, japan and even America.

i bet that if you try find the vid here on youtube you should find it.

  • Well, TV is not the best source for a research nor for making opinions and decisions. And even if it was, only one (moreover, without critical view) source is never enough

And I don't know whether Discovery channel provides some kind of "citations", so one can be able to find the very source of information given. I bet Discovery channel is more a "popular" than a scientific medium - like eg. "Ethnomusicology" journal by SEM.

A good summary is written in Grove Music Online by John Wright.

  • well i rather believe something thats have any kind of proof then just an argument. discovery channel is mostly more scientific then most other channels. if you can´t prove that its wrong then i rather trust discovery channel

  • Lol:) Sometimes my english skips a beat:)

  • jaws harp arre originally coming from scandinavia and was used by the vikings mostly at celebrations and stuffs like that

  • I'm sorry to disapoint you andiders. The earliest dated jews harp findings in scandinavia are from the 1200. And there has been findings in Japan that are over 1000 years old. The jewsharp is most lightly to have it's origin from Asia. It's a wide missundestanding that the jewsharp is originally a viking instrument. True, they most lightly have used it. But it is an imported instrument.

  • why did u say most lightly...

  • It depends on what you mean. I say most lightly it has it´s origin in Aisa course that were the oldest are found. And arciology isn´t an exact sciense. They can still find older elsewere.

  • About the vikings it was just plain bad english:P Of course they have used it )( seing as when they are found in scandinavia), What I ment to show uncertenty about, was the use Andiders mentioned. There are no real known source as to what they were used for. It could have been celebrations, music in general or by the rune maters. There is, as far as I know, no real know viking tradition when it comes to jewsharp use or music.

  • If anyone now of any, I would be very interested in knowing were to find info about it. I am a keen player myself, and always on the lookout for new traditions.

  • Oxford Music Online - one of the good places where to find a guidepost for further knowledge hunt.

  • im saying why say most lightly. its supposed to be most likely

  • yeah scandinavia/fennoskandia

  • sounds nice

  • is it supposed the frame supposed to vibrate on your teeth?

  • not necessarily. You can protect your teeth with your mouths a bit - it hardly affects the sound.

  • Amazing skills. I've never heard of such an instrument and it has a unique sound and complex sound.

  • Awesome!!

  • that was pretty cool

  • Boy, a little of this goes a loooooooooooooong way!!

  • For me this is the classic jew harp rythm :) Love to play it, it's like meditating. Good vids, you're a skilled an inventive jews harp player!

  • Thanks. Hope to get some new vids up soon...

  • @majnjord jew harp rhythm lol

  • That has a nice medieval melody. I like it a lot!

    Thanks!

  • jews are better than those unpeaceful muslims who think there peace but are all terorists, im no jew myself but JEWS ARE AWESOME

  • It's JAW HARP, not jew -.-

  • It can go by both names.

So it IS called a Jew's Harp.

  • It's nice that you love Jews, but you should love everyone and not slander other religious groups.

I have many Muslim friends and they are among the sweetest people I know.

Now talk about this dude's awesome jaw haro skills!

  • it may have been derogatory 100 years ago, but that meaning is obsolete now. The instrument is commonly referred to by a number of different names, and that's all they are.

  • There are 2 main theories about the name Jew's Harp:

    1. it is just a misspelling of "Jaws Harp", deriving from the peculiar part of the body used to keep the instrument and to propagate its sound.

    2. this instrument was typical of the Jewish communities of central Europe, perhaps remotely imported from Eastern lands.

No good being afraid of your own shade ;)

  • you big jew

  • you're showing your intelligence and education with that comment.

  • What size were you using on that vid? 12?

  • hahaaaa lex luther

  • jew harp lol

  • lol

  • thats the real name, moron

  • sounds liek some Enya beat .. you know .. that irish chick who sings stuff .. nevermind ... cool as shit tho ..

  • this guy is really cool...

    XD

  • Jonny..my boy! lol

    Dude im impressed!

i cant get good melody like dat, any suggestions?

  • LORD VOLDEMORT! hehehe...great playing man, i have one but am afraid of chipping my teeth lol

  • Huh! I can't make a melody on my harp, only rhythm.. I can't make my harp phone this high tones (they're called obertones, AFAIK), and I'm trying to do it during 3 months... Maybe, my harp is too bad? My modification of jaw harp is called "drymba", it comes from West Ukraine.. Anyway, this great video forces me to play more and more :)

  • Glad you liked it. Yes good instruments help - good luck and keep 'twanging'...

  • @yurataras I had heaps of trouble when I got mine until I read a paper on the physics of them.

Turned out because it was cheaply constructed it wasn't actually producing much volume in the overtones.

One of the factors in this is the clearance between the tongue and the frame. Hold it up to the light and if there's a wide gap then this (may) be the problem.

I reduced the clearance on mine using a vice and suddenly I could make much better overtones. YMMV

  • awesome, great job. I've been thinking of uploading some jaw/jews harp videos on youtube.

  • Thanks - look forward to seeing some of yours..

  • hah thats class
