In music, I like lyrics about freedom vs oppression, poor vs rich, violence vs peace, etc. I like lyrics about the REALITY, not this "dark/evil" bullshit. There is of course widespread debate over this, is Venom really black metal, etc. (I believe they are, 10000 times more black metal than bands like Dimmu B. or Satyricon). You don't have to listen to me, of course, but I will tell you some good bm, 1st 3 Bathory lps, 1st 2 Sarcofago lps, 2nd and 3rd Darkthrone lps (+4th&5th), both Vomitor lps, 1st Necronomicon lp, some thrashy or deadly, but still blacker than Malcolm X.

@N73B60 To further clarify, where evil atmosphere in metal is more important than speed or brutality, that's usually where you find black metal. There also was no clear division between 1st and 2nd wave, cos bm bands were few, but they existed all through the 80s, and when the norwegian "pioneers" (Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone) started to pay tribute to the old black flame, they all sounded different, and all the copycat bands ruined the scene (within few years) and gave black metal a bad name.

@N73B60 And so, from 1996 or something, as the copycats again were copied by a new generation of copycats, and so on, so on, a few genereations more, and we have the inbred homogenized crap that "passes" as black metal (by the stupified masses) today. We should never accept it being called black metal, just as if a band doesn't rock, they don't deserve to be called a rock band. This is fucked up situation, but also leaves real black metal in the underground, which is kind of where it belongs.

"deathcrush" is way heavier then this. Sarcofago played a classic style of thrash like many other bands played around that time (like for example Tormentor).

Deathcrush has darker music, crappier vocals, 'grimmer' sound,...way more ahead of its time then sarcofago's "inri" wich was a very standard metal album in those days compared to Mayhems debut.

As far as music evolution goes, Bathory wasn't specifially the first and only black metal band, but it was certainly a first wave black metal band. Along with Hellhammer, Sarcofargo, Venom, etc. I think Sarcofargo definitely capture (audibly) a satanic atmosphere in a room if it's ever played fulled blast.

Sarcofago Rule, but i would say that Mayhems Deathcrush is more epic. Deathcrush was ahead for its time, it was released the same year as this Sarcofago Album but the songs were allready written long before the release.
