  • A very beautiful person that I was with and loved for almost four years just took his life recently after battling very serious manic-depression. I happened to hear this song and couldn't help crying tears of joy because he now knows "how it feel to be free". Nina Simone is fantastic and can sing deep in her soul and you can feel it. Bless all those who are now free.

  • oh and by the way i didn't just look it up on the internet, we are doing blues music in Music and school

  • @dylankesha17

It's blues music which originated from West Africa, they were brought to america as slaves and the sang music to express their pain and it grew in the south as a popular type of song which is blues music. I like it because it is the only genre of music which makes me smile :) correct me about the history part if im wrong.

  • john legend brought me here.

  • @ripkid1 me2

  • @ripkid1 it should've been, at least, lighthouse family... then you would've been a more cultured person some years ago...

  • @umtemaisoutrote It doesn't matter what brings someone to such a great music! John's remake also brought me here, and that's what he (+Roots) wanted to do - to remind people the great music from the past....or to show them something they didn't know before...I'm grateful they did!

  • God this is amazing

  • adam buxton sent me here!:)

  • Beautiful rendition!

  • Excellent song, and what a voice!! This should be mandatory listening for all inner city kids who think gangsta (c)rap and booty shaking is cool.

  • @imthedorf1964 You are so right! They need to know the price that was paid for them. This song says it all!

  • I've searchedddddd for this ....thanks a million.

  • You should be singing this song, it’s your song, I hope and wish you get to end one day…

  • Nina! The best version of this song... and so powerfully sung.

  • I love how gradually and perfectly the intensity of this song grows. There is no separation of Nina's soul and Nina's music.

  • Coke used this song in an ad? Fuckers. Colombian and Pakistani coke bottling workers, who face death threats and actual assasination for organizing a union, should have adopted it as their anthem.

  • she should have sued coke and everyone else that ripped her off in her life. Her message lives on Everyone Should be Free!

  • @bookworm266 - i feel sorry for you if this makes you think of 'coke adverts'

i saw a film where this was played over the end credits - same version as this but it went on past the fade on this one for at least another minute.

  • This is real music uhhh it's so good!

  • This song always make me think of those coke adverts.

  • @bookworm266

Hey, it reminds me of the coke adverts too :-)

And tbh, if it weren't for that advert... I would never have looked up and found this song :-).

  • Faboulous. A gorgeous song with such simple, but at the same time such powerful words. I couldn't carry a tune if it was stapled to my hands, but I love singing along, even if I do it badly!

  • Same here.

  • this is possibly my favourite version, if not the ray charles or the jools holland cover.

  • does anyone know what year this was recorded?
