  • G D6 C G D6 C G D bdim sounds like the bridge is pretty sused out. any thoughts

  • god this song chokes me up everytime I hear it. AMazing.

  • Love this song!

  • Actually, the song was co-written by Don Henry. The other half of this great song writing team was Jon Vezner, who is, BTW, Ms Mattea's husband. I was fortunate to be in a songwriting class under Mr. Vezner. We, of course, twisted his arm to get him to sing this song for the class. Spoiler for this song. Don't Read this or it will forever tain't the song. Vezner says the lady in the song actually said this in a loud, questioning tone of voice, "Where've You Been!" ha

    It still inspired a gem.

  • I awaited for Paula [Whom works @ Salem Kroc Center] while I am doing my exercise routines bit no shows from her but thought tomorrow is another day I hopes nothing happens to her because she is so sweet and generous I hopes she reads this so wherever you are @ Paula it's because you didn't came.¡ ;(

  • I watched a man hold his wife of 66 years hand who died last night of heart complications. If ever two people embodied a song more it was these two. Even with dementia, she would know if he had been to see her. This song makes my heart ache today...

  • Love ,love ,love it. Great song by a wonderful singer. Thanks for this . RCAKEN. ENGLAND.

  • Really nice

  • This is a great song....written by Don Henry....In my opinion, one of the best written songs ever.

  • Reminds me of my grandparents. Chokes me up every time.

  • I'm glad I'm not alone about the tears...this song is truly an emotional powerhouse!

  • Beautiful song written by Kathy's husband.

  • Really great stuff. Wish there was more.

  • Always makes me cry - beautiful.

  • I was directed to this link from a Facebook friend, and I do not think I have ever cried so hard over a song in my life.

  • Boy when you pay attention to this song the ending chokes ya up big time. Yeah Kathy big fan here ! Not an alhimerze desease person, , but my anxiety fear of separation anxiety is what hit the mark for me. But I'm all better now, and totally alone with no FEAR! YEAH

  • my father use to take us to school in his little ranger. we had this on casset. its one of the few songs that bring back so many happy memories sense he is gone. it makes the happy tears worth every moment of this song.

  • Thanks again for all your comments. My heart goes out to all of you who have relatives/friends suffering from this terrible disease.

Thank you Kathy for a truly wonderful poignant song.

    God Bless Peter

  • One of my favorite songs of all time, I cry every time I hear it, every time I sing it, it's just very moving. It's love like this that makes life worth while.

  • This song renews ones faith in the ultimate goodness of people. It illustrates how love is eternal. I love it so very much. It is completely moving. Kathy, you are beautiful and I wish you a long and beautiful life replete with the type of love you sing of here. God bless you forever.

  • I finally managed an arrangement for this song performed by a single acoustic guitar. Very tough to capture the important movements on one instrument. Kathy's guitar really adds to this mix...when she drops out I miss what I was hearing. I didn't realize she played that well!

  • We played this song at our wedding 15 years ago today! I still love it as much now as I did then.

  • Watched this video in my nursing class today when discussing Alzheimers, dementia, and delirium. Many tears from the class. Beautiful song. <3 Great work.

    thank you

  • this one always makes me cry. I lost my mother to Alzhenmier's.

  • I first heard this song in 1999 and immediatley equated it with the relationship and marriage of my grandparents. I travel this week to attend the memorial service of my grandmother. There were married 78 years!

Within moments of hearing of my grandmother's death, this song played on my iPod at work. I became a basketcase.

Now I plan on using the lyrics of this song at her memorial service... I can hear my grandfather saying "Where've you been? I'm just not myself when your away."

  • where is my edwin?

  • CJ from West Wing?

  • i am a nurse and used to worked with Alzheimers patients and this song is so touching and powerful. love it

  • my parents were married almost 70 years until she got alzheimers and then a stroke. she died over a year ago. i miss my mother. my father is still alive at 92. but he is alone like the song.

  • Beautiful ballad ... beautiful love story ... wish it could be this way in real life ..........

  • super sweet song!

  • Everytime I hear this song I just cry, hits close to home.

  • This may seem silly, but I don't care....This is for my best friend and companion for 6 years Lola. She is just more than a cat, she was with me thru my college years. She lost her life 2 years ago and I grieve for her every day....I will see her again in heaven....

  • To Theladyrebekah & taliesinjones, thank you both for your kind comments. Its been just over a year now, time does not heal, but it makes things easier. I still love this song

  • I cried when she told us about losing a player during her Christmas show two years ago. I gave her hug, For my mother died and a freind cancer, a friend's mother passed away from cancer.

  • I sang this song at Karaoke the other day to my friends who had never heard it before... all I have to say is: Niagara falls. If you really want to affect someone, let them hear this song.

  • A true classic!! My grandparents are now separated by death and she's in the nursing home alone, but they will meet again one day!! God bless anyone suffering w/ Alzheimers!!

  • The Show Choir I'm in, Herscher "Class Act", did this song as our ballad this past year. The power of this song to move and inspire others is amazing. This is one of the best ballads anyone can pick to sing.

  • From what I understand this was is based on a personal experience her husband went through with his, I think, parents. Or should I say his parents went through.

Like others, I cannot hear this without 'tearing up', Try it at 65mph. on a freeway, then try to work yourself over to the hard shoulder! love this song.

  • I love this song..... to find love like that is rare. Makes me cry every time.

  • crap ... after 20 years I still can't hear this song without crying. just beautiful.

  • @jameypittman right there with ya !

  • If this isn't about what love is all about, I don't know what is. An incredibly beautiful, powerful song by an artist with the voice of an angel. I still cry when I hear it.

  • For myself, and my friends, don't forget lonesome ole gay lovers as well.

  • This is probably my favorite song ever. I basically grew up listening to Kathy Mattea, & some of her songs-especially this one-have contributed to my view of the idealistic love.

  • This about her husband's grandparents. She said that when she'd spoken to her husband, it was the last time she said anything. She died just a few days later. I'm glad he got to see her. Isn't it ridiculous to keep people apart like that unless it's for different problems?

  • thank you kathy! havent heard this song in years and you still managed to bring a tear to my eye. Powerful song!truly the power of love! GREAT JOB GREAT SONG!

  • Thanks Kathy,

  • It will appear when you least expect it.

  • The world needs more love stories like this one!

  • In the other nursing home under God's thumb nail. That points to where he is. The one whowho whose name is different. And changes with the wind. There are so many cats the squirrels are no longer around, and the trees do not produce acorns but if the cats were out the squirrels would collect acorns again. Bring the dogs in so the cats will come out and be ran off so the squirrels can come back an live with the dogs they get along.

  • I cannot NOT cry when I hear this song. Same as when I first heard it 20 years ago!

  • This is one of the few songs that made me well up when I heard it the first time, it's so beautiful and powerful.

  • My Lord! This is just simplybeautiful!!

WOW! Some CC commenters are poets in there own right! xo

  • That's what True Love does to people!!

It would do the rest of the world a whole lot of good to embrace it!! xo

  • LOL @ true love.

  • I lost my grandfather to Alzheimers'..this song hits the nail on the head...

  • Indeed where have you been? We met so very long ago, one simple kiss remembered all these years, your face imprinted on my heart. now I've found you again... where have you been? My heart is healed by your smile again.

  • Sometimes The past meets the present.

Hello past, nice to meet you again.

    Where have you been?

    Love Always.

  • I still love you, Abigail.

    -John

  • I can only hope I find love like that one day

  • I hope you do too:)

  • Me too. And if you havent found it yet I wish that for you as well

  • You will! :-) We celebrated 40 years of being together (34 married) today. If somebody can put up with me that long, then there IS somebody for everybody!

  • That is great ... I wish you many many more years of happiness..

  • For my Mads, I'm just not myself when your'e away..."

  • I'm so glad I looked up this song, I used to listen to this as a child and just cry my eyes out. I'm 24 and I still cry LOL. Very touching stories. God bless

  • If I'm not mistaken, Kathy was inspired to write this song because of her husband's grandparents.

  • I lost my wife of 39 years 10 weeks ago to Alzheimers. An illness I would not wish on my worst enemy. This song made me cry. I love Kathy Mattea's voice. A wonderful song.

    Thank you

  • @pjm290 i hope u r dealing with that as best u can, tho i know it's very hard! my parents were together since my mom was 16...over 33 years...& he died last aug.

it's been tough on her too!

the wistfullness of this song always moves me a lot, i've been married now for just over 2 years & if i could make any wish it would be to grow old with him, & spend the whole rest of our lives together!

  • @pjm290 my deepest sympathy, god bless.

  • @4wdRam Thank you for your kind thoughts. God Bless

  • @pjm290 great words.....special. I am fearful my father may have the onset of this awful disease which from what I understand only gets worse. this song makes me cry too.....guys are allowed to cry. thanks for your post.

  • @mekes12 - My heart goes out to you and all others who have a loved one with this disease. One thing I say to you all, and I speak from experience. Carers need lots of support too, take good advice, spread the load, accept help from others. It's no use you becoming ill. I nearly went under, trying to do everything myself. It was only through help from family and friends that I made it. God Bless

  • @pjm290

  • @pjm290 Wish there were someway some of us out here could do something to comfort you. But I know that isn't possible.... congratulations on the wonderful 39 years together. So many people have dreamed and hoped for such a relationship. You are a wonderful example to us all.

  • @pjm290 It almost makes me cry everytime I hear it.Just rememeber one day Ya'll will together again and she will say "Where you've been"

  • @pjm290 I am sorry for your loss Sir. This is a 1 year old reply, however, I pray you have found some peace. Mike

  • @pjm290 My father has Alzheimers. This was a favorite song of his every time I hear this I think about my dad and the irony of this song being one of his favorites. He once told me how much he would hate to be in the hospital in separate beds on different floors. Mom and dad have been married 51 years. I know how unfair this disease is and I wish you happiness and peace. Life throws us some whoppers sometimes. Live life now. I am truly sorry for your loss.

  • After more than half a century of marriage my friend and his wife had to be in separate nursing homes. He recently died, and his wife was brought to the funeral home for the service. Her wheelchair was right up against the coffin, and she spent the entire funeral service looking at her husband's face.

I looked at her, and could hear Kathy Mattea singing this song.

  • this song makes my mom and I bawl like babies...

  • this is one of the most poignant love songs I have ever heard, and whisperingwind, it reminded me of camping at Sugargrove with my wife in the West Virginia Mountains, gonna do it again, make memories we'll never forget.

  • My parents took us camping alot when I was young, and my mother liked to sing and play her acoustic guitar as we gathered around the bonfire in the evening. I remember she sang a number of songs, and this was one of them. I've always loved it because of that, but this is the first time I have heard it sung by anyone other than my mother. I just now have been surprised to notice my mother sang it exactly the same as Kathy Mattea does here. Exactly as I remember it

  • @whisperingwind2

    beautiful

  • too bad everyone can't find a claire or edwin. so sad

  • This was my wedding song... now today we buried Grandpa... the circumstances were identical Grandma has alzheimer's... made me cry... Powerful song!

  • My sweetheart and I will celebrate 30 years next year. Where did the time go? But I love her more than I did all those years ago.....

  • Took me 8 years to remember the partial lyrics I knew to this song and finally try google to find it leading me here. Made me cry like the first time all over again : ]

  • I absolutely love this song! Best love song ever!!!!

  • i1111111

  • Wonderful post! Her voice is so beautiful and this has always been one of my favorite songs...touching...it's right up there with Colin Raye's "Love Me".

  • Absolutely gorgeous in every way. And I love her anecdote about how the "where've you *been*?!" was originally delivered in rather a different tone. :-) Just goes to show that inspiration can emerge from all kinds of situations.

  • it was the '89 or '90 when i heard it first and it still touches my heart - timeless.

  • I can't listen to this song without crying.

Oh, my dear sweet father - so sick~ I dedicate this to my Dad. Such a beautiful

song -- "where have you been? I've looked for you forever and a day...

I'm just not myself when you're away"

    thank you, for posting this.

  • This is love, just simply put a beautiful song that always reminded me of the love that I saw in my wifes grandparent's eyes. I hope I can show her that I love her this much

  • Around 1994 I was driving from Chicago to Florida late at night. Just as I crossed into Tennessee this song came on the radio. I didn't who Kathy Mattea was or anything, but I thought ,"This is the most beautiful song I've ever heard" - and it still is.

  • This song is so Beautiful. Babe, she is singing about us!

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever written.

  • This is the only song that ever made me cry~

  • i glad we found each other....

  • Simply amazing!!!! This song was my first introduction to Kathy Mattea and still brings me chills!!!

  • What a spellbinding performance!! Not a note missed & sung with so much feeling. It even had a lump in the throat of an old cynic like me. Thanks so much for posting it.

  • Saying good bye is hard...we all have to do it,and in turn at sometime in our life someone will be telling us goodbye...love your family, friends and even your enemies!! Life is short people!!! Live like there is no tomorrow!!

  • Thank you so much for posting this beautiful song! I remember it when it was such a big hit. What happened to Kathy, she just dropped out of sight? Floyd

Thank you for sharing this with me Diana!

  • Where've you been? xoxoxox

  • Her voice is so pure and lovely. I like how she puts her soul into her music.

  • Thanks for this song. It was recently the two year aniversery of my grandma's death and it will be the one year of my grandpa next month. This song reminds me of them. Especially the part about sixty years, because when my grandma passed away they had been married for about 65 years. Once again thanks.

  • Just a remarkable song! :)

I've always just adored this beautiful song..and her voice is just adds to it!!

  • I went to see Kathy perform last week, when she described this song and its origins i laughed rather to hard. Apparently the last 'where have you been' she wasn't all nostalgic and emotional... and i quote 'grandma was pissed' ;0)

  • This songs means so much to me...

really makes me miss my father in-law~ He was my best buddy~~ Orvial Buckner

  • A Farewell

We say goodby a lot this time of day.

The sun is going down; the shadows grow too long.

We knew the day would end but still,

We say goodby too much this time of day.

  • What a versatile musician. In my opinion, she's more at home in this small venue than in a concert hall. But that dosen't pay the bills.

  • I was driving the 91fwy. when I 1st, heard this. Come the end I had had to get onto the shoulder, tears in my eyes!! Caught me by surprise. Brilliant, just brilliant!!!!

  • i can relate this song to the movie THE NOTEBOOK. i saw it tonight amazing movie.

but this song is very touching.

  • Tears... sniff sniff... tears

  • Kathy begins this video looking like an average housewife, but by the end, she sounds like a goddess who sums up the human experience in one simple song.

  • Just amazing. I have tears.
