I think it is the result of the surroundings they grew up in. Poverty with a gang and drug culture around them. Money was power and you needed to show the money to prove you have the power.
Businessmen on the other hand already have the power so they don't need to show the money to prove it.
They brag to compensate for their lack of talent*lol*, what I don't get is they hate being stereotyped let they do little to change that perception. So which is it?, do they wanna be respected? or continue the stereotyping?.
You do have to make a distinction though; it's mostly commercial, watered down, MTV wannabe-gangsta rap you're referring to. There's lots more out there, but it just doesn't get airtime.
When rap was underground in the 80's, it was about racism, poverty, crime, etc. When it became mainstream in the 90's, successful rappers who once were poor, now had money to spend. And it's funny to see how it went from 'but that money hasn't changed me', to shameless bragging about it :)
@GaapZZX Well I understand it was originally about the struggle they had an it was a way of expressing themselves, but this has become some type of joke.
I think they brag about how much money they have because they can't come up with anything else to write about. Money this, money that, that gets old fast. There is a song by Michael Jackson called "Money" - listen to it on YT. He sings about how people will "do anything for money"....kind of the opposite of these rap songs!
@Bivolari lol, sorry Bivolari. Went to Florida then Vegas, and still have a few more places to go before summers over. But I'll try my best to fit in some videos anyways.
And yes that's a good point, I'd love to see a rapper brag about a degree from Harvard lol.
"I'm rich!" "I'm famous!" LOL

95% of rap songs are about how awesome they are and 5% are about how sucky the other rappers are. The funniest thing is they get rich doing this.
