Good stuff man thanks for the upload, i use to dj back in the 80s in NY and the latin rascals were the first to get on radio and do editing /mixes like that , wish i had the know how to do editing back then. Your good man upload some actual tape splicing technics. Man i feel like buying a reel to reel now, thats if they sell them nowadays.LOL
i cant beleive you edited that with tape, it's so precise. people try for hours to make a sweet beat like that on a PC. i laugh at them, because of you. this probably took forever and sounds AMAZING.
I always wondered how Mantronix did his mega-mixes. I never even thought about it being analog tape edits, I always assumed it was done digitally. That looks like a LOT of work!
I remember doing that..such a long process but fun as hell..Great post for the new heads that don't know how hard it was back in the day, this is true essence...
Cool video, just like some of the other uploaded stuff from this member! Say, is that the Revox deck with the word 'L..L.L' written on the bottom and what's the picture of Sabrina doing on left tape reel...? :-)
The Sabrina pic originally was put on the reel holding yearmix 1987, in order to cause a smile on the face of the NOS technician mounting it for Radio 3 airplay. As things go with reels, their contents get mixed up a lot ;) pickup reels become feeders, they get turned upside down etc.
Yep I'm as surprised about that as you are. At the time we all thought the glue on those white stickers would last 10 maybe 15 years at the most. Turns out it holds for at least 20 years, with no end in sight yet! I did store them dry and at room-temperature all those years, but nothing really special..
I recently did some restoration work on tapes like that full of splices that were done in 1983 and they still play fine too, quite surprising! The work you've done on this tape though is absolutely amazing!! I look forward to any other videos of this nature you put up in the future..it's also great showing people who've only worked on digital how complex and time consuming it was on analogue tape. Thanks again for putting this up, it's brilliant!
the greatest Djs, remixer, editors, producers ever!
I feel very blessed that i lived in NYC between 1984 and 1985. I have many of there classic radio mixes and they still blow me away. They pretty much pioneered freestyle music, producing cover girls, TKA, noel, nayobe, information society, and more.and did the editing of breaker's revenge...not arthur baker. go to deep house page website to listen to their early 80's mixshows.
Nice work; there was a lot of pre-digital "sampling" done by tape editing during the 60s or thereabouts. Kind of ironic that the 80s style you've chosen to replicate would more likely have been originally made with the first wave of digital samplers, but it's cool all the same :-)
I think you misunderstand; We have not chosen to 'replicate' anything, this is the real thing. These ARE from the 80s. High enough quality sampling only got affordable around 1988. Few producers and remixers, like Trevor Horn, only had their fairlight around 1983, but this certainly wasn't anywhere close to normal at the time. Cutting tape was.
OMG Latin Rascals: eat your heart out.

By using measuring scales and rulers. Mind you, this is work from 20 or more years back, so we don't do this anymore.
