I just found my sister's old Gaylord while cleaning out my Dad's attic. She really loved that toy !! I'm cleaning him up and giving him to her - she will be shocked to see him. He is missing his tail, battery cover, leash and bone.
I'm so glad I found this. I remember having this dog when I was 5. I didn't know he had a name!. I took it to show & tell in kindergarten. There was a problem though, I thought the dog pooped. Many years later I realized the batteries were leaking. Good old days before recalls. But Gaylord vanished shortly afterwards :(( I'd love to have one of these again!!
I thought I was going to be the only one to comment on how loud Gaylord was. I read an article somewhere that these tended to go through batteries rather quickly.
The only time I've ever seen one of these was when I was shopping at a thrift store and saw a lady with one in her cart. It was in perfect condition, and she knew exactly what it was and wouldn't even let me touch the thing... If I remember correctly she bought him for 5 dollars.
Great video! Of course I may be partial as I just bought one of these through ebay. I'm expecting mine this week and as advertised in the auction, it works and has no cracks. It also has the bone. The box would have been nice to have but I'm all out of room in my collection so it's just as well that there's no box. Ideal did make some big toys alright, I have the Astro Base w/box and Robot Commando. Thanks for uploading. - David
Pretty cool, I like the fact that gaylord actually picks up his feet, if you look at todays robot dogs like tekno and icybie, they kind of just slide their paws on the ground. This dog is a true all terrain dog, sounds like he uses a drill motor with a worm gear. If you like toy dogs, check out a hasbro furreal biscuit dog, they are really cool.
As a kid with a parent allergic to cats and dogs (thus preventing me from having either), you better believe this would have been at the very top of my Christmas list!!!
Thanks for Making this video.I have a Gaylord dog that I got for Christmas in the 60's . I can't part with it.He sits on top of my armoire in my den...He has his bone..I don't have the box or leash. I don't know if he works...the metal battery connectors, one is broke off. He's a GREAT pet! Thanks !!!!
Wow, you must be an authority on Ideal Toys-NOT! If Ideal Toys stinks at making toys, then why are they so valuable? You obviously don't know what you are talking about. This is the second video of mine that you've slammed. If you don't like them, why do you continue to watch them?
I'm not sure, but Gaylord was a popular name in the 50's and 60's. At the time he was being sold in stores, the word gay had nothing to do with what it means today.

I asked Santa for a puppy and Gaylord is what I got. I never played with him much because he scared me a lot, just like he scares your cat. If I root around some more downstairs, maybe I'll find the bone. Thanks for posting the video. I'd never have looked for him otherwise. Now, if only I can find my old Zero M guns. Second childhood is great!
