The hair sacks don't pan out. The only way to fix the situation is with that of heavy machinery and intense chemical sifting. There are going to be negative reactions from this, but in the long run its the only real way to fix it. If you really want to help the problem and prevent this from ever happening again, then stop driving your cars, and start physically pushing your government to invest in greater sources of power. That Hydrogen vehicle looks pretty damn swank, its exhaust? H2O!
I've seen demos of these booms and hair booms soaked up the oil quickly and without effort. I don't think MofT ever claimed the booms floated....look on their website for photos of booms AND floatation devices made into the grids.
Hey Great Idea. Im really stoked to see this is happening. I've done testes myself and have found the booms to be successful at absorbing the oil. However they should be tied together and attached to flotation devices to insure there success. They also seem to work better in calm water and even on shore. Def not to be pulled behind boats as they are still somewhat fragile. Unless maybe in burlap sacks.
the reason we are not useing the hairbooms is b/c when they tried the small testing here in florida were i lived and seen with my own eyes, that when the hair is left in the water for more then an hour the hair gets heavy and sinks, so now the big problem is people are doing this and its dragging oil to the bottom of the sea, and when they tried dragging the hair with a boat it just dispersed the oil in clumps and didnt collect any oil, so there for it only works in containers like this one lol
@monkeyboy, you sound like a little whiny girl complaining about hair in the water, hair is organic and really doesnt do anything to the animals habitats, if it did, then we'd be screwed, do you know how much hair just plain falls out? it just decomposes, which is also good for the environment, and its why you dont see piles of hair build up on the ground.
Finally someone have the solution! God news!! I start to get worry and nervous about people in Florida, cuba and Bahamas I cannot imagine beautiful beaches and especies destroyed with petroleum!! Im from Portugal congradulations great work!!!
The Great Florida Weave has collected 200+ pounds of hair for buoy creation, with buoy creation scheduled to begin next week this is a great demo! Thank you Matter of Trust - you rock!
What is more nasty than a hair sausage? I think I would rather just have the oil than to deal with these things. If they break, all that hair will be floating all over the place, the animals will all be choking on hair balls.
If you're having a hard time getting through to Matter of Trust, you also may want to contact your local police and fire departments (as well as salons; especially Aveda who uses non-toxic hair products & dyes) to help us get the booms out there. Thanks, Jackie
Thankyou! A bunch of us stuck up here in Massachusetts want to help out, but have been told repeatedly that clean-up is best left to professionals. This is something we can do right here at home to help!
Washing the dog and giving him a good brush and trim today - doing hair cuts here at home tonight and we're starting our first donation box!
Oh my God. THANK YOU! I live in New Orleans and I have been trying to find something I can do to help. Since I know a couple of dog groomers and hair dressers, I know I can collect a ton of hair and fur. Thanks again for your concern for us down here, and thanks for the fantastic video!
One wont be feeding mushrooms but rather oyster mushroom mycelia. The mycelium breaks down carbon and hydrogen bonds in lignin and cellulose. These are the same kinds of bonds that are present in petrol chemicals (i.e. petroleum). Please check this out because it probably is a tool that will save our planet.
@BuddyWilds , I was wondering the same thing myself. I've heard something about using oyster mushrooms to eat the toxicity out of the boom but am unclear how you'd feed that much oil to a bunch of mushrooms.
So can anyone tell us what happens after the oil is collected?
Has anyone seen what happens to people that eat hair?

@rathat48, yes it is, but its not meant to come out of the ground in gallons, hair just rots away while oil will sit there for years

What about floating hair booms? Put used beverage bottles (which float) in with the hair. Good luck. Craig Ylitalo

Nice Video, but you should add salt to the water demos to make it more realistic. The ocean isn't tap water.

Hay and straw do the same thing for soaking up oil.
This is a cheap, quick and looks like an amazingly easy way to clean up the spilled oil. It float's Google. solutionoil Top video
