My first car was a used Fiat 124 when I was 16. The only thing I had done was I had the valves adjusted with those shim disks. It sounded like a diesel, the mechanic checked the clearance on each valve and put the proper thickness disk in it, and when he was done you could hardly hear it run.
I still drive with my knees up. It's just so damned comfortable and natural to me.
Just a great car, and none of the current junk comes close, except the new 500 of course.
Dont forget to put 1:100 two stroke Oil API TC into the tank for each fill, because thats good for the carbs and the pistons..modern fuel does not take care of the old engine materials!
I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Sports Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Porsche vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs and Fi injectors clean as new!
i have a 124 sport coupe in my garage waiting for when i get my license (gettin it at the end of this year) me and my dad have worked on it and i really cant wait to drive this baby
Thanx!...That brings me back to a much simpler time....And a lot of fond memories of High School... Sixteen, and Cruising in my Fiat Spider, my first car...

My roommate in college had a '74. Rust all over the place, but the wood dash, open top, and the definitely European feel to the car made it a joy to drive.
Quite untrue! There are three large parts suppliers you should check out. Vick Autosport from Texas, International Auto from Virginia and Bayless, INC from Georgia.
Sweet car and I love the sound of your engine. A few of them that I heard are really loud and hard but yours sounds steady and nice :) Original engine?
Motor is 2000 motor with 4mm HC pistons, 40/80 cam on intake, Weber 36 ADL Weber on 1800 manifold. Stock 2000 FI Header and exhaust but with a FAZA 2"inch Rear muffler with twin outlet pipes. Car is hard to drive slow due to that wonderful noise.
Why do Italian cars have the dumbest steering wheel positions? I drove a Lancia Beta and it was the same way. Car & Driver called it the typical "American-knees-in-armpits-Italian-driving-style."
@brianjcavanaugh It's the way the guy was sitting. I had a 124 for 30 years. I put the seat back, and stretched my arms straight out to the wheel like an old style race driver. I think it's the English cars that have the knees-armpit wheel position.
But you can't miss that steering wheel's angle. It's tilted upwards, like an old truck. Just like I see on almost every Italian car, made before the 1990s anyway.
