The US could never afford such a mission on its own. Like it or not, the US, Russia and Europe are in it together for future space exploration. Possibly even China one day-after all, they have a moon landing planned in the 2020's.

Yes but my point was its not possible. I know its fictional. In Earths atmosphere they use jet's thrust or rocket thrust to push against the air; which is why planes move. Same is with birts, they push against the air. Space is empty. That type of engine is completely useless UNLESS they create some sort of support to thrust agains. Otherwise they have to use Earth's gravity and careful calculations to go to Jupiter. And how do they get back? With rockets, they don't.
