i seriously do think development of rail gun research should be focused on the problem on how to simulate plasma trails cause that would just be frigging awesome. i mean how cool would soldiers look going around making a bunch of plasma trails across a battle field? but don't forget, cause it would be as much fun, not to overlook the major hurtle of fabricating a handheld assault rifle prototype version that would easily kick the bad ass meter up a few notches. especially dual welding! oorah!
now lets see. if we accelerate a 1.2 gram projectile to approx 15000 fps we will have more muzzel velocity than a .50 bmg. but now we have even more recoil to deal with and no nice expanding gasses to use in a muzzle brake to counter this. so what do we do now?
@thejoey468983 Are you referring to a 1.2 gram railgun projectile? There wouldn't be any recoil, it being launched by a railgun. Given recent Navy tests though, there'd probably be a high chance of something melting down because of all the heat generated.
I like how people comment on how bad the recoil would be, when firing this rifle in real life would cause a Hiroshima-like explosion due to the kinetic energy of a bullet at relativistic speed hitting air. Enjoyable movie, though, including the rail guns.
@Ultralism maybe not that bigof an explosion, but yea it wouldn't be sumthing u can put in an assult rifle. it's still pretty badass though (making christmas list now)
Rail guns make excellent hidden incentives for controlling your victims. Why pay taxes in any nation that doesn't protect you from this? And if anyone is wondering, the electrical car can be modified for energy that will produce beam weapons.
Yeah Kitchenaut, didn't you hear; Duracell now makes a Navy-ship-sized-capacitor-bank that fits inside your hand? It also doesn't melt you alive when it discharges!
A rail gun is supposed to work by electromagnetics. Essentially bypassing the traditional speeds that gun powder could ever achieve. It's basically only limited to the energy source. But even if it went mach 3 you still wouldn't see it like you can in this movie. Best case with even mach 10 you could see plasma charged muzzle flash as the air around it is super heated. Speed Of Light is around Mach 885,250 btw.
Looks like the Gauss gun from Crysis.

it is a movie, in fact in the movie the rifle can apparently fire at the speed of light, which it obviously cant.
Saintsfanuk1 3 years ago
@Saintsfanuk1 But light in the movies is a lot slower than the real life light.
ThinBear4 1 year ago
@chopperguy91 current prototypes actually fire at almost 8 times the speed of light.

the bullets are supposedly traveling near the speed of light, but if you look closely, they can be seen traveling. need i say more?
