Ronaldo's idol was Romario, and he played for PSV before him.

And the Dutch league, de Eredivisie, has an amazing record for giving class talents a real chance at making it: Cruyff, Van Basten, Romario, Ronaldo, Van Nistelrooy, Bergkamp,... (very long list)

@honeybozo I would not count Salomon Kalou as a class talent to be honest, and if you're still going as far back in time as Van Persie, then (among many others): Arjen Robben(Bayern), Rafael Van Der Vaart(Real), Wesley Sneijder(Inter), Klaas-Jan Huntelaar(Milan), Thomas Vermaelen(Arsenal), Zlatan Ibrahimovic(Barça),... (not that shabby right?)

good players in Holland now (off the top of my head): Luis Suarez, Afellay, Emanuelson, Moussa Dembele, ...

@ytzuigt Moussa Dembele certainly wasn't on my radar.... my point earlier was - would a (brazilian or any other foreign) top class player (level of ronaldo/romario earlier choose the eredivisie now to get adjusted to Europe.... I still don't think so - my impression is that the level of play in Holland steadily has declined somehow.... ur list isn't shabby - but none of them yet are able to really transform a team -

@honeybozo Well the quality of the Dutch league is indeed declining, but I'm just saying they still turn out quite a lot of great talent, certainly above the level of any other league comparable to the Dutch league in quality and budget.

@ytzuigt _ Agreed: grass-roots organisation is not a problem in Dutch football - possibly the main cause of the league still turning out talent very consistently . My point was really focussed at the highest level, where luck obviously also plays a major part, because one needs at least several outstanding players in a generation to make a dent at a major championship. My bet is on Belgium in a few years time....

When Ronaldo left PSV he was still under 20..AMAZING PLAYER!

Pato (Milan) is the player who has the potential to come close. He is not quite 20 yet. But Pato seems to be lazy at times and also seems to lose his concentration very easily.

I'd remember when he played in Eindhoven. Dick Advocaat made a mistake in the season 96/97. 'He had Ronaldo on the bench, and let nilis and Peter Möller Play, a danish forward. That was a big mistake, because ronaldo was much better!!!!

He was in his prime during his 96/97 season at Barcelona and his first at Inter in 97/98. Back then he was the best ever, better than Maradona, Pelé, what have you. Best ever, bar none. Then he left for the World Cup, he wasn't at his best but nevertheless played a hell of a match against the Netherlands in the Semis. Then something happened before the Final, and he was never the same again. I find it UNFAIR, and CRUEL, that football fans only got to see the best in the game for 2 years only.

It's amazing how with all the injuries and the sezuire before France 98 Final he is still one of the best ever. Imagine if he hadn't had all these knee injuries.. certainly deserving of the greatest ever I think.

Those damn idiots at PSV had him in the gym at every opportunity, beefing him up, whilst he was still young and growing. Sadly, his tendons could not keep up with the rate of his bone growth, therefore leaving his joints weak and vulnerable to injury, until the tendons adapted, and the two bad injuries were the horrific outcome.

Ronaldo could have become better than even Pele if not for his injuries. Because of his injuries he is only 3rd best in my opinion :(
