Your point about using the holes is a good one. Nice for marigolds or herb borders. If you look on my channel there is a vid showing the progress I made in 2011 in expanding my garden.
I swear.. this is the best video i ever seen on doing raised beds on youtube. I did 2 beds of the exact replica on my front lawn next to my mango tree. One is made out of wood, the other is cinder blocks. Yours is fantastic. I grow herbs, kale, peppers, pineapple, flowers in one bed & I grow spinach and more peppers in my cinder block bed. Cinder block is the best, i even plant in the wholes of the cinder blocks. Those blocks are very useful, better than wood.
i enjoyed this no frills approach, i did the same thing with cinder blocks to make a fire pit, i used two oven racks to grill on, the cinder blocks were capped off with red pavement (blocks)? im wondering if i lay out my pool liner on the ground now, then by spring i wont have grass/weeds? i have a stack of cinder blocks collected from the trash people thru into the woods before i bought this place-
Real work? I'm not allergic to that. That's funny. 8 inches is plenty to grow the greens, cabbage, radishes, squash, peppers, and tomatoes I'm currently growing and eating. I could always add another layer of blocks if it becomes necessary. I dug the blocks in, rather than buy dirt. I spent nothing on any of this but 25 minutes of time. This bed would suit any vegetable gardeners purpose. To grow food in a bed that will never have to be replaced.
also you only really need 6 inches of "RICH COMPOSTED SOIL" roots wont have to search for nutrients if they they them at 6 inches of soil :) and true you could always add another layer of block in case you want to grow taters or carrots :)
this is a great and simple video. Thank you for taking the time to share!

What did you eat or drink just before 3:30 on the video? Boy did that make you mover faster! ;-) HaHa!

Why not build the wall on the outside of the tilled area? You are losing space and it is not a stable base.
